A Whole Lot of Fun Happening
at Heatherwood!
It’s been an exciting month as we
rolled out the welcome mat for our
new residents at Heatherwood.
It’s been fun meeting our new
neighbors and seeing the
community really come to life!
We’ve been getting to know one
another over friendly games of
cards, solving crossword puzzles
together, and even spirited games
Morning exercise
of Bingo. Our mornings start out
class
— looking good!
great with exercise at 9:30 and in
only a few weeks the class has really grown to 18 in attendance.
Remember, there is always room for more! We have had some
really great entertainers over the last few weeks and can look
forward to many more in the coming weeks and months. Our first
lunch bunch trip was a success. The food and conversation were
great and the weather cooperated, too, as the thermometer hit
55 degrees for the first time in many, many months. Remember,
Wednesday is our outing day, so watch the sign-up sheets for
lunch trips, museum outings, live concerts and other fun trips.
The first session of “Let’s Get Crafty” was a hit and everyone who
came completed a beautiful spring wreath for their apartment
door. April will be a great month. Sign up in the Activity Room for
super outings, including trips to Indian Hill Music events, which
are wonderful, free concerts. As the snow slowly melts, we’ll be
able to enjoy the beautiful patio areas at Heatherwood. We have a
lot of great events and activities planned, so don’t be a stranger!
Come on down to the Activity Room and join in the fun; we’ll save
a seat for you!

The Sweetest Bean
Chewy, sweet and colorful, jelly beans are a favorite
treat for people of all ages.
Jelly beans are widely believed to have originated
from Turkish delight, a candy made of cornstarch
and sugar that is similar to the soft, gel-like center
of a jelly bean. Jordan almonds, a type of candied
almond with a hard outer shell, may also have been
an inspiration.
An unknown American candy maker created the first
jelly beans in the mid-1800s, and in the 1860s, they
were marketed to soldiers serving in the Civil War.
The protective, non-sticky outer shell and small size
made them easy to carry in pockets. Jelly beans
quickly became a popular penny candy and were the
first candy to be sold by weight rather than by piece.
About 16 billion jelly beans are produced every year.
Depending on the manufacturer, it can take seven to
21 days to make a jelly bean. Once the gooey center
is formed, the bean undergoes a process called
“panning,” when colors, flavors and several layers of
sugar are applied, creating the outer shell.
Cherry (red) is the most popular jelly bean flavor.
Children’s Easter Parade
at Heatherwood
All residents are encouraged to invite their grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, nieces, nephews and other significant youngsters on

Major League
Milestones
As spring gets into full swing, so does Major
League Baseball. From opening day on
April 5th to the last game of the World Series
in the fall, baseball fans will be cheering for
their favorite teams and players. Hit a trivia
home run by learning these fun facts:
• Hall of Famer Hoyt Wilhelm hit a home run
during his first at bat as a rookie pitcher.
His career lasted for 21 more years, but he
never hit another home run.
• Cincinnati Reds catcher Johnny Bench
could hold seven baseballs in one hand.
• Baltimore Orioles shortstop Cal Ripken
Jr. didn’t miss a game in 16 years.
From 1982 to 1998, he played in
2,632 consecutive games.
• Deion Sanders is the only man to play in
both a World Series and a Super Bowl.
• The longest professional baseball game
lasted 8 hours and 6 minutes. After
25 innings, the Chicago White Sox beat the
visiting Milwaukee Brewers 7 to 6.
• In August 2011, only 347 people showed
up to watch a Florida Marlins game. The
record low attendance was attributed to
the approach of Hurricane Irene.
A Pocketful of History
They pass through our hands nearly every
day, but how much do you know about coins?
The U.S. Mint has been producing them since
1792, and there are billions in circulation
today, but here are some lesser known facts
about our metallic money.
Leading ladies: Sacagawea, Susan B. Anthony
and Helen Keller are the only women to be
featured on circulated coins. However, Queen
Isabella of Spain, Eunice Kennedy Shriver,
and Virginia and Eleanor Dare appear on
commemorative coins.
Monetary mottos: All circulating U.S. coins
display two mottos: “In God We Trust” and
“E Pluribus Unum.” The first was suggested
by a minister in 1861 and approved by an
act of Congress in 1864. E pluribus unum, a
Latin phrase meaning “one from many,” has
appeared on coins since 1795 and was made
mandatory in 1873.
Lincoln legend: The Lincoln penny, the longestrunning U.S. coin, is the only circulating coin
whose portrait faces right, simply a choice
made by the designer. Created in 1909, the
back of the coin showed two stalks of wheat
until 1958. These are commonly called wheat
pennies and are occasionally still found in
circulation today.
Words to Live By
This section of the monthly newsletter is
dedicated to thoughtful phrases, poems
or other works of literature that will cause
us to stop and ponder the power of the
written word. The following quotes are
taken from a book entitled, “Now Is the
Time, 170 Ways to Seize the Moment.”
Now is the Time to Learn
Each day we meet someone new.
We’re exposed to new thoughts, new ways.
Use every opportunity to add to your knowledge.
Go with an open mind.
Relish the chance to learn.
Enjoy the challenge.
Seek Perspective.
“I do not think much of a man who is not wiser today than he
was yesterday.”
— Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865)
Laugh Out Loud
Is laughter really the best medicine? Many
medical experts report that laughing
produces significant health benefits.
Easy exercise: Think about what happens
when you get the giggles: Your heart rate
increases, you can’t catch your breath,
and your facial muscles are sore. That’s
right — laughing is like a mild workout,
burning up to 50 calories in just 10 minutes.
A happy heart: In addition to aerobic benefits, laughing heartily can
improve circulation and help balance blood pressure levels, boosting
cardiovascular health.
A stress-free smile: While some stress is good, too much can cause both
mental and physical health problems. Laughter relieves stress by reducing
stress hormones and releasing endorphins (feel-good chemicals) in the
body. People usually feel more relaxed and happier after laughing, even
during trying situations.
Rest and relief: Laughter is considered a natural pain reliever, both by
releasing endorphins and by serving as a temporary distraction from either
physical or emotional pain. Watching a comedy before bedtime can ease
painful symptoms and relax your muscles so sleep comes easier.
Fun friendships: People love having someone to laugh with. Connect with
friends by sharing a joke or two. The result is an active social life — a crucial
component of good health and happiness.
Green Ideas for
Golden Years
Since 1970, the world has
celebrated April 22nd as Earth
Day, a time to bring environmental
awareness and protection into the
spotlight. Many communities honor
the day with rallies or festivals. If
you’re looking to contribute, there
are plenty of ways to get involved
and leave the planet a little better
than you found it. Here are a few:
Take an intergenerational nature
walk: Go for a nature walk with your
grandchildren or other youngsters
and share your favorite parts of
nature. Bring along a trash bag
and pick up any litter you see along
the way.
Plant a legend: Arbor Day takes
place this month, too. Honor both
days by planting a tree with friends
and family. This act will leave a
legend of beauty for generations
to come.
Paint the community green: Work
with your neighbors and community
managers to ensure that your home
is operating as “green” as possible.
Brainstorm together for ideas to
reduce, reuse and recycle.
Lead a letter writing charge:
Contact your local or state
governments about ways to protect
or improve the environment where
you live. Encourage others to do
the same.
