Appointed Commissioners for ASB 2014-2015 People interested in being an ASB commissioner for the 2014-2015 school year must be approved by the administration and the ASB Advisors, Dr. Raleigh and Mr. Garrett, before going through the interview process. To be considered, you must fill out and return all the appropriate forms to room X-201 no later than Wednesday, May 6th by 3:00 pm. Late applications will not be accepted. The interview schedule will be posted on the window of room X-201 on Monday, May 11th. Each applicant will have an interview with Dr. Raleigh, Mr. Garrett, and selected members of the ASB class. Based on this interview and two teacher recommendations, the executive committee will recommend people, who may be outstanding and competent commissioners for next years ASB class, to Dr. Raleigh and Mr. Garrett. The appropriate administrators will then be given those recommendations. These adults will make the final decision regarding class membership. The number of people per job may vary. Also, please be aware that positions may be adjusted during the evaluation process. Interviews will be held during support, lunch, and after school, on May 18-22. If you are interested in applying to be a commissioner, please read the brief descriptions below. In addition to these tasks, each commissioner is required to participate in all ASB events. If you have your own commissioner position in mind, feel free to bring that up in your interview mentioning what events and ideas you would execute throughout the year. All ASB members must participate and work hard the entire year. Effective time management is critical if you are going to be in ASB. Your participation is not limited to the events for which you have primary responsibility. ASB is a fourth period class all year long, so make sure your schedule can fit this class. Also, the ASB class will be going on a mandatory three day, two-night retreat (September 25th27th). Be prepared with ideas that you want to bring to the class. If you have questions about the interview process or other aspects of the selection process, please feel free to speak with the ASB advisors. Good Luck! Commissioner Descriptions Publicity • Publicize ASB, class, and other CHS events in various and creative ways. • Create and administrate a Facebook group and multiple Facebook events. • Create and administrate a twitter and Instagram account that will effectively promote ASB and CHS events. • Must be in contact with The Acorn, and/or The Patch to publicize necessary events outside of the school. • Create and distribute flyer requests in order to ensure organization. • Must maintain positive and productive relationships with the other commissioners, and must meet everyone’s advertising needs on a regular and timely basis. • • • Work closely with the Communications commissioners in order to create new forms of multimedia advertising. Must update news boards around school weekly with new flyers and posters advertising events. Experience with Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and/or Photoshop is preferred. IN THE INTERVIEW: We suggest that you come prepared with 3-4 advertisements. For example, include some of the following: school dances, sports events, blood drives, class nights, etc. Feel free to add extra events! We suggest that you show a variety of your talents, including hand drawn and computer designed advertisements. Athletics • Creatively promote participation at CHS athletic events. • Communicate and plan meetings with team captains at the start of each sport's season and as needed throughout the year • Send reminders out to coaches and team captains to ensure that they will be introduced at the Pep Rallies, and make sure that this part of the Pep Rally runs smoothly • Make a Game Statistics & Report Box to put in the attendance office for sports teams to be able to have their stats and summaries read in the morning announcements • Plan and implement Tailgates, Powder Puff, Dodgeball, and the Annual Kevin Cordasco Student Vs. Faculty Basketball Game with Community Outreach Commissioners • Devise and implement at least one new competition per semester between the staff and students that promotes school spirit • Must maintain a good relationship and effective communication with the pack leaders • Participate appropriately in the morning announcements • Be supportive and fair to all sports teams • Maturely represent Calabasas High School in a positive and enthusiastic manner • Be prepared to get all types of students on campus excited about being involved in the Pack • Manage the Pack Facebook page and create events IN THE INTERVIEW: We would like to hear how you plan on regularly communicating with the CHS sports teams. We also would like to see some degree of public speaking skills. Be prepared with some new ideas regarding the Pack and how to increase participation as well as including a variety of Pack Leaders. Clubs and Multicultural • • • • • • • • • • • At the beginning of the year, organize an informational meeting with the club presidents, advisors, administration, and the club advisors to describe fundraising procedures for clubs. Publicize an accurate schedule of meetings for each approved club with a Month in Clubs poster. Organize, promote, and run a Club Rush Week in the first and second semester. Make sure that all approved clubs are active. Keep a current file of all approved clubs with brief statements of their purpose, president, faculty advisor, and constitution. Make sure club events are not overlapping with each other or with ASB events. Give clubs opportunities to promote themselves on campus. Plan and publicize months that celebrate diversity. This includes Black History month, Genocide Awareness Month, etc. This may entail working in coordination with appropriate faculty members. Organize a multicultural month in the spring that includes student and invited performers, speakers, and a banquet. Promote tolerance, diversity, and pride in students’ heritage(s) and culture(s) in an interesting and insightful manner Meet monthly with club presidents to help with communication, clarify procedures, and provide support. Make monthly Club Calendars to be given out in Homerooms IN THE INTERVIEW: We would like to see what kind of system you would use to set up and maintain the effectiveness of the clubs on campus, and what the consequences would be for ineffective clubs. We would also like to see what plans you have to promote a multicultural and diverse spirit throughout the school. Communication Commissioners • Read daily announcements at the very start of homeroom periods-not to exceed five minutes. Meet with Mr. Garrett every morning to collect and script the announcements with a creative opening and ending. • Once a month, film and edit a KYOTV production that features the accomplishments of the entire student body (You must be able to duplicate what you make with your current software). Each KYOTV episode should be up to but not longer than ten minutes. • Film and advertise ASB and CHS upcoming events. • Film and edit ASB Election videos. • Work with Campus Entertainment, Formal, and ALL other Commissioners to promote their events via film or other means and check regularly with them to ensure that their events are being promoted in the way they would like them to be • Present versions of KYOTV to the administration at least four days in advance for approval, so that it can be reviewed in a timely manner. • Work closely with the Publicity commissioners in order to create new forms of multimedia advertising. • Be sure to include a wide variety of students in all episodes to ensure equal representation IN THE INTERVIEW: We suggest that you bring a sample KYOTV film that shows school events, comedic skits, an interesting story line, and an overall view of your skills. Be certain that your trial KYOTV is no more than 10 minutes and promotes upcoming CHS events such as Blood Drives, Homecoming, Cabaret, etc. Formal Entertainment ▪ Homecoming and Spring Dance: themes, catering, DJ, decorations, publicity, ticket sales, pictures, facilities (tables, chairs, etc), and organization. You will be working on the theme and presentation of Homecoming during the summer. ▪ Meet and discuss with Campus Entertainment Commissioners to decide on the Homecoming Halftime Show themes and scheduling. ▪ Have school dance themes and ideas ready to present to the ASB class and contact ideal DJ’s and other forms of entertainment and event planners in a timely manner. ▪ Some knowledge of lighting and sound equipment is desired. ▪ Anyone that would like to be interviewed for this position must realize the immense time commitment and effort that is required, especially during the difficult weeks before Homecoming and Vice. Planning and executing these events efficiently and successfully must be your first priority. ▪ Be able to manage your time effectively IN THE INTERVIEW: We suggest creating a scrapbook, poster board, binder, or some other way of expressing your themes, design techniques, and ideas regarding these large-scale events as well as your organizational and time management skills. Campus Entertainment ▪ Cabaret: Auditions, Selection, and Program ▪ Spring Event ▪ Set up bands and other activities for lunchtime entertainment monthly. ▪ Homecoming Halftime Show: script, skits, floats, music, announcing, court (cars and crowns), and possibly fireworks, etc. Be able to coordinate with the class officers, and keep everyone on track throughout the set up process. This is one of the most hectic events as there is usually not a lot of time to put it together, so we are looking for effective time management skills. You will be working on this event over the summer ▪ Help coordinate performers at other events. ▪ Have ideas for new events to create a more exciting environment on campus during lunch. ▪ Work as a liaison between the Theater Program and the Music Program. IN THE INTERVIEW: We suggest that you think of 1 Homecoming theme and correlating float themes for each grade (4 floats). Also, try brainstorming some of your own events that you would like to implement next year. Pep ▪ Pep Rallies: 5 Pep Rallies per year, including the Senior Pep Rally. ▪ Nutrition Competitions: this involves working effectively and respectfully with the athletic program, the band, the dance program, the cheerleading program, and the administration. ▪ Spirit Weeks including dress up days and appealing nutrition competitions. ▪ Pump up Halloween, Valentines Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Earth Day, and additional holidays by having various competitions. ▪ Make a determined effort to involve faculty in spirit weeks IN THE INTERVIEW: We suggest that you bring a minute-by-minute of a 2530 minute pep rally, along with music suggestions, and day-to-day spirit week ideas following one specific theme (including nutrition competitions and relative spirit apparel). Community Outreach ▪ You will be expected to complete the following events: Adopt-A-Family, Canned Food Drive, Red Ribbon Week, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Matchmakers, etc. ▪ Promote Earth Day (work with eco-friendly clubs through school) Work with Athletics to plan the Annual Kevin Cordasco Student Vs. Faculty Basketball Game and fundraise for the Kevin Cordasco Fund ▪ Maintain campus recycling and environmentally friendly programs such as the Green Ambassador Program ▪ In charge of Campus Beautification and Improvement ▪ Hold meetings every other week for the Green Team as a way to get students not in ASB involved in campus beautification ▪ Promote ways for students to get their service learning hours and help students with the process ▪ This list of possible events and tasks may seem overwhelming, but they are spread evenly throughout the entire year. All require effective communication, planning, and follow through. IN THE INTERVIEW: We suggest that you come prepared with some ideas that will provide us with your insight on managing and executing 3-4 community events listed above. Show us your skills in being able to effectively communicate with businesses and other organizations. Heart 2 Heart: Blood Drives • Fully plan and run four Blood Drives during the school year • This includes getting food donations, recruiting as many donors as possible, reaching out to donors outside of the community, promoting the drive as positively and effectively as possible • Work with Community Outreach Commissioners on Matchmakers and a Valentine’s Day Event to fundraise for the American Heart Association • Possibly plan a community Blood Drive off campus IN THE INTERVIEW: We suggest that you come prepared with some ideas that will provide us with your insight on managing and executing 4 Heart to Heart Blood Drives listed above. We want to see how you will be able to effectively communicate with Red Cross and increase student and parent participation in the Blood Drives. Faculty/Staff/Parent/Student Relations • Attend PFC meetings and/or regularly relay information from ASB including our input, ideas, and let them know about our events • Meet weekly with Mrs. McEvoy • Plan Faculty Banquet to appreciate teachers and staff • Come up with new ideas for faculty appreciation and awards • Strengthen ASB and faculty relationship by strengthening communication and working as a lesion • Address faculty concerns and work to compromise over issues such as taking up classroom time for homeroom announcements, KYOTVs, etc. • Work as a lesion between ASB, Link Crew, and Peer Support • Help with Freshman integration and reaching out to members outside of ASB for their input, ideas, concerns, etc. IN THE INTERVIEW: We suggest that you come prepared with some ideas for events that will help show more teacher and faculty appreciation. We want to know how you will improve ASB and faculty relations as well as improve the effectiveness of relaying information to the PFC. We also want to hear how you will get students outside of ASB involved and maintain a positive relationship between Link Crew and Peer Support. Tech • Help each commissionership with all of their technical needs whether it be for a Pep Rally, set up for the Homecoming half-time show, or music at the Multicultural Banquet, etc. • Have a comprehensive knowledge of computers, sound equipment, lighting, and camera equipment • Maintain and update Basecamp • Continue SMS texts to remind students of upcoming events • Must be willing to put ASB as first priority. IN THE INTERVIEW: We suggest you come prepared with some technical aspirations you have for the coming school year. Also, be prepared to answer questions that will test your knowledge of the fields of technology you will be working with. Webmaster • Make sure chsasb.com is up and running • Come up with ways to reward students for attending events (in the past, there was a program called 5 Star for example) • Work closely with Publicity involving online advertisements • Come up with innovative ideas on ways Commissionerships to inform the rest of the student body of what they are working on and how they can get involved Possibly create different web pages for each Commissionership IN THE INTERVIEW: We suggest that you come prepared with knowledge of our existing website: chsasb.com and new ideas on how to improve and manage the site. We also suggest that you come prepared with ideas on how to improve student participation in events and what you could do to help.
