 JOB ANNOUNCEMENT: Deputy Director Coleman’s new Deputy Director has a strong racial and economic justice analysis and is committed to building the power of students and families of color in San Francisco, and winning member-­‐led racial and economic justice campaigns that create real change in our schools and communities. S/he supports the mission of the organization by providing strategic direction, guiding program development activities, and implementing appropriate evaluation systems and processes. The Associate Director will also play an external role, representing the organization in a range of venues, with diverse stakeholders. S/he is a strategic thinker and effective communicator and writer who is up to date with urban issues and the work in progressive social justice organizations and movements locally and nationally. S/he is an effective, democratic, and collaborative staff leader who knows how to build strong supervision, accountability, and staff development systems and can relate to our multi-­‐racial constituent communities and strongly connect with members. For more than 3 decades, Coleman Advocates has waged winning campaigns and created long-­‐term change through policy advocacy, 1 grassroots organizing, youth and parent leadership development, and strategic electoral work. We are working to halt the displacement of working families and families of color from San Francisco, increase educational and economic opportunities for low-­‐income families, and ensure all children’s right to a secure future in their own city. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: •

Provide direction and leadership to ensure the achievement of the organization's mission, strategy, and its annual goals and objectives. Serve as a thought partner to Executive Director. Oversee program planning and implementation related to organizing, campaign, and program goals, objectives, activities, and strategies. Supervise and provide coaching and support to key staff. Oversee monthly staff development programming and annual performance evaluation processes. Develop, implement and monitor an evaluation plan addressing strategic and program evaluation questions, data collection methods, analysis and reporting. Act as a spokesperson in relevant venues (both through public speaking and by authoring blogs, Op-­‐Eds, etc) to enhance the organization's profile, promote our campaign agendas, and build strategic relationships. Provide leadership to our policy advocacy and implementation efforts. Represent the organization in key alliances and coalitions. Oversee employee search, hiring, and orientation processes. Work with staff to understand and meet grant deliverables. Develop, or assist with development of, program/project budgets; and contribute to reports and grant proposals as needed REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS •

A commitment to improving the lives of poor and working class families of color, and to racial and economic justice A minimum of 5 years of previous nonprofit leadership and management experience including staff supervision and team-­‐building experience Ability to build community within and outside the organization as well as to understand the culture and issues facing Coleman's multi-­‐racial constituency. Knowledge and experience in social change issues and movements, combined with an ability to apply those big picture perspectives, to lead strategically about how Coleman can evolve its model and impact. A quick learner, with excellent critical thinking skills and the ability to multi-­‐task and prioritize in a fast-­‐paced environment. Demonstrated leadership skills, including motivation, coaching, strategic direction, conflict resolution. 2 •

Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills. Experience with budget development and oversight. Ability to work independently and collaboratively with other staff. Knowledge and experience of program evaluation principles, theories, concepts and practices. Ability to have a flexible schedule that includes attending night and weekend activities as needed. Computer skills in Word, Excel and Google applications. A current Driver’s license. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS •

Bi-­‐lingual English/Spanish, verbal and written Experience with fundraising, particularly donor/funder cultivation and stewardship Training and/or experience in relevant policy analysis Experience with public speaking and media interviews Knowledge of education policy/school reform issues from a racial justice perspective Owns/has access to a car with insurance Is from or has deep knowledge of San Francisco’s Black, Latino and Pacific Islander communities Knowledge of and experience with 501 (c) (4) organizations and their compliance with federal, state, and local laws We are an affirmative action employer.
