Lee Vice Principal NEWSLETTER Issue #14 MESSAGE FROM THE ADMINISTRATION Welcome back to the final term of school. We hope everyone had a restful Spring Break. We’ve started this term with a focus on Random Acts of Kindness. As mentioned in the announcement that went home, we are encouraging students to document some of the many things they naturally do to encourage, cheer up or help others. We’ve have a poster set up in the hallway to graph the results and we are making daily announcements of the total number of Random Acts of Kindness we’ve written about on coloured strips of paper. These Random Acts of Kindness are just part of the bigger Social Responsibility concepts we teach students throughout the school year. For more information on Social Responsibility, you can check out information on the Ministry of Education website: https://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/perf_stands/social_resp.htm DIVISIONS 1 & 4 Social Studies EXPO On Tuesday, March 10th Divisions 1 and 4 opened their classrooms to the rest of the school for their Social Studies World Expo. Students worked in groups to research, write and create displays for a country. The work was detailed and students clearly explained the highlights of their research with the students who came through the classrooms. Well done Division 1 & 4 students! BRITANNIA MINES FOR DIV 5 THRU 8 Our grade 4 and 5 students went on a field trip to Britannia Mine as an enhancement to their study of Mining. A big thank you goes to our PAC who subsidized the trip. Students came back exhausted and smiling – always a good sign! PARENT CONVERSATION CIRCLE Our SWIS, Kitty Tang, has organized a Parent Conversation Circle for parents wanting to improve their English. The best part is that it’s held at our school every Monday afternoon in the library. If you missed registering for the program, contact Kitty at the school to see if there is still room! PIZZA NOTICES GOING HOME The PAC will be sending home Pizza Notices later this week in preparation for Pizza Day on April 23rd. TRACK ATTACK (GRADES 3 – 7) It’s spring time which means it’s Track Season! In the middle of May, our school will participate in a Track and Field meet at Minoru Park. Starting this week, students will begin training for the meet. To introduce students to the events in Track and Field, teachers organize ‘Track Attack’. During ‘Track Attack’, students will have a chance to participate in all the events to determine their favourites. ‘Track Attack’ will happen on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week and next week. We try to take as many interested students as possible to the track meet. Once ‘Track Attack’ is finished, teachers will look at the strengths of the athletes and place as many interested students as possible in events. Event practices will then be organized for before school, at lunch and after school. EARLY LEARNING CENTRE Our Early Learning Centre in Portable 4 is a very well used facility! We have City Centre and Touchstone using the facility each week, along with our own District Early Learning Centre Program. Our own Early Learning Centre Program will be closed due to field trips on April 13th and April 15th. CURRENT ADDRESSES NEEDED! If you are moving, please let us know as soon as possible. We always need to know your most current location. Students who begin with us can remain with us, even if you move to another neighbourhood. We need current addresses and phone numbers for accurate contact information. During this time of year, we also start organizing the school for next year’s enrolment. Our student numbers need to be as accurate as possible. If you plan on leaving the school, please let the office know as soon as possible. Thanks in advance for your help with this! READERS CHOICE WINNERS Each winter Mr. Rosell runs the Readers Choice Book Contest for students. Primary students listen to the nominated picture books in their classrooms and intermediate students read a minimum of 3 of the 7 nominated novels. At the end of the term, students vote on their favourites. The winners of Cook School’s Readers Choice are: “Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library”, a novel by Chris Grabenstein and “If I Built A House”, a picture book by Chris VanDusen. Later this month Mr. Rosell will be giving away sets of the books in a random draw. COOK SCHOOL T-SHIRTS We will be offering Cook School TShirts for sale this month. These red t-shirts will be great for spirit days and for our track and field meet in May. A variety of sizes will be offered. Please watch for a notice going home. JEANS DAY – APRIL 24th Each year, the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation runs a fundraising campaign called “Jeans Day”. They sell buttons for $5 each throughout the community and the idea is that wearing a button allows the person to wear jeans to work for the designated day. Our school will be selling these buttons as a fundraiser for the hospital. If you would like to purchase one, please visit the office! ELL ASSESSMENTS Each spring, students who receive English Language Learner (ELL) support have an assessment to determine ELL levels for the coming year. Our ELL teachers conduct the assessments that include oral language, writing and reading. Next year’s ELL levels will be included in the third term report card in June. INTERNET SAFETY PRESENTATION Ms. Lee and Ms. Collins will be doing a presentation on Internet Safety Tips for Parents on Thursday, April 30th at 7:00 PM in the school Computer Lab. They will be going over some guidelines for families on Internet use, Internet safety, the use of Social Media and Digital Citizenship covered at school. Please join us for this informative meeting! A notice will go home asking families to RSVP. PAC MEETING IN APRIL This month’s PAC meeting will be on Thursday, April 23rd at 1:00 pm. We will be discussing school goals for the coming year and hearing a shortened version of the Internet Safety presentation for parents being held on April 30th. See you at the meeting!
