This opportunity is targeted to young leaders 18-30 years old on the local level who are interested in global
health & poverty and looking for opportunities to build their advocacy skills. Our 100 current REAL Change
Fellows have had an incredible year, with over 300 lobby meetings, 38 education and outreach events
nationwide, and at least 19 piece published pieces of media written by Fellows!
REAL Changers learned how to organize their communities, build relationships with their members of
Congress, and influence the budget process so that fighting poverty is prioritized. In addition they learned in
depth about several global and U.S. poverty issues, including EITC and tax fairness, the racial wealth gap,
SNAP, access to vaccines through the GAVI Alliance, global access to education, maternal and child health,

• ASPPH/NHTSA Public Health Fellowship Program – Now Accepting Applications
ASPPH is pleased to offer recent graduates from ASPPH-member Schools and Programs of Public Health an
exciting opportunity to gain experience in injury prevention and motor vehicle and highway safety issues with
the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in
Washington, DC. Applications are currently being accepted for the 2015 ASPPH/NHTSA Public Health
Fellowship Program and the deadline to apply is 11:59 PM, Monday, June 15.
ASPPH, in collaboration with NHTSA, offers mentored training experiences for public health graduates to
prepare for careers in governmental public health practice. Assignments will be at DOT/NHTSA headquarters
in Washington, DC.
The ASPPH/NHTSA Fellowship Program is a unique opportunity for early-career public health professionals
with strong research and analytic skills who are dedicated to reducing the economic impact of traffic injuries in
the United States. The selected fellow(s) will have the opportunity to take a first-hand look at the workings of
the federal agency dedicated to reducing motor vehicle crashes and become involved in NHTSA’s role in
addressing motor vehicle and highway safety.
The fellowship position is a full-time opportunity for a one-year period (October 2015 – September 2016).

To qualify for this fellowship, candidates must have graduated from an ASPPH-member school or program
within the last five years and be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident (Green Card). Preference will be given to

• NBPHE Certified in Public Health (CPH) Exam Information
All MPH students admitted in the Fall 2013 term and beyond are required to take the NBPHE Certified
in Public Health (CPH) exam. You must have completed 21 hours including the 5 core courses to be eligible
to sit for the exam. Below is the text from the bulletin regarding this requirement.
“Effective fall 2013, all new MPH students are required to take the Certified in Public Health (CPH)
Examination. This examination offered by the National Board of Public Health Examiners (NBPHE) provides a
credential for public health professionals, which demonstrates mastery of core competencies. In addition, this
examination provides a mechanism to assess the attainment of CEPH competencies.
Students who have completed 21 credit hours including the core courses are required to take the
examination. The examination will be offered in October and February at a local testing venue and on campus
in May. Costs associated with the examination will be paid by the college. Enrollment in the exam will be
coordinated by the Office of Student Services.
Once the student has passed the exam and all requirements have been verified, the student will be Certified in
Public Health, and can add the initials CPH to his/her name and degree. Students not passing the examination
will be provided remedial tutoring and advising prior to taking the examination for a second attempt. Passing
the examination is not a criterion for graduation.”

If you have completed the 21 hours, we recommend you sit for the exam while the course material is still
timely.

Study Guide Information
As you prepare for the exam, please refer to the link below to review the study guide. The CPH exam is
comprehension-based, not a memory test, so examinees are encouraged to have a solid comprehension of the
exam content instead of trying to “memorize” the material. The study guide will provide your will tips to
prepare for the exam as well as extensive information on the areas to be best tested as well as sample
questions. The CPH exam consists of approximately 200 multiple choice questions. Though the majority of the
questions on the exam will be on the core areas, some questions on the cross-cutting areas will appear on the
exam. I strongly encourage you to become familiar with the study guide and begin preparing for the exam
while you are enrolled in your core courses.

• Master’s Level Epidemiology Positions: Kansas Dept. of Health and Environment

• Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Internships
The OMB internship program is for graduate-level students (students currently seeking a Masters degree) in
public policy, public administration, business, economics, or a related field. The duration of the assignment
varies, however internships can run from three to twelve months. U.S. Citizenship is required. At this time they

• Council for State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) Now Accepting Applications! For

CSTE, in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Association of Schools and
Programs of Public Health (ASPPH), and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), established this
fellowship to train recent graduates in the expanding field of applied epidemiology. The CDC/CSTE Fellowship is
designed for recent or impending master’s or doctoral-level graduates in epidemiology or a related field who are interested
in the practice of public health at the state or local level. While the program provides rigorous training for its participants,
it is also designed with flexibility in order to meet the particular interests of the fellow. Fellows are matched to a state
health department for a two-year fellowship position based on program area of interest.

Closely designed based on the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) program and using a mentorship model, the
CDC/CSTE Applied Epidemiology Fellowship offers a unique opportunity for graduates to acquire and develop
epidemiologic skills through high-quality, on-the-job training. Fellows work closely with highly trained and experienced
epidemiologists at the state and local level as well as those working at the federal level with the CDC.
Mentor and Host Health Agency
Each Applied Epidemiology Fellow is assigned to a designated host health agency and two, highly-trained and
experienced mentors (primary and secondary). Host health agencies are CDC and CSTE-approved, with demonstrated
capacity to provide a fellow with technical training, research opportunities, and practical experience in the application of
epidemiologic methods.

§ A master’s degree (MPH, MSPH or MS) or doctoral degree (PhD, MD, DVM, DrPH) in a public health-related field

• Register your contact information for the campus Emergency Communication System (ECS)
James Albertson, OUHSC Campus Police, recently sent an email to all OUHSC students, faculty and staff
requesting that EVERYONE complete a quick online registration of their contact information (see below). A
check to see how many people had actually registered showed that only a total of 37 College of Public Health
students have complied with this request.
In the event of a campus emergency (bad weather, intruder, etc.) everyone needs to get the word
immediately…but you will be in the dark unless you register your contact information as requested.

required, we encourage students, faculty, and staff to list a cell phone number where you can receive text

• Change of Major Procedure – Quick Guide
General track MPH students are eligible to apply to the departmental programs after completing 9 hours of the
required 15 hours of core courses with a GPA of 3.0 or above. Students on probation are not eligible to change
majors until their GPA has improved to 3.0 or above.

Students should submit the completed COM form and other materials to the Office of Student Services, CHB
165. A current transcript will be added and the packet will be sent to the department by the Office of Student
Services. Departmental decisions are returned to the Office of Student Services and the student will be notified
of the decision via email from Robin.
• Volunteer/Intern Opportunities: Eagle Ridge Institute
Eagle Ridge Institute is a non-profit organization that works with law enforcement, retail, and youth to stop the
spread of substance abuse. Eagle Ridge focuses on prevention of adult binge drinking, under-age drinking,
prescription drug misuse and abuse and smoking through community involvement.
ERI seeks students in epidemiology, biostatistics, health promotions or health administration who can volunteer
or serve as interns. For students who have limited time but who would still be interested in supporting the Eagle
Ridge mission, it would be possible to work within focus groups, work groups or coalitions since these groups
are more flexible in terms of time commitment.

Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health & Human Development (NICHD) Division of
Intramural Population Health Research, Epidemiology Branch
The Epidemiology Branch is an intramural research program within the Division of Intramural Population
Health Research at the NICHD. The Branch’s mission is to conduct original research focusing on human
reproduction, pregnancy, and child health. Branch scientists are internationally recognized as leaders in these
areas, and are recruiting multiple fellows particularly interested in reproduction, fetal growth and development,
pregnancy complications (e.g., gestational diabetes and preeclampsia), genetics, birth defects, nutrition, obesity,
type 2 diabetes, developmental origins of disease, child health and epidemiological methods. Postdoctoral
fellows have the opportunity to develop their own research initiatives within the mission of the Branch.
Candidates legally approved to work in the USA with either an earned doctoral degree in epidemiology or a
closely related field, or with a medical degree and advanced graduate training in epidemiology or biostatistics
within the past five years are invited to apply. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated
research interests in areas currently under investigation in the Branch and with superior analytic and
communication skills. Salary is commensurate with training and relevant research experience.
