WED THUR MON TUE 25 May 26 May 27 May 28 May Interschool Cross Country at Jolimont Primary School 29 May SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT DAY – Students do not attend FRI 1 June WA DAY PUBLIC HOLIDAY 2 June 3 June KAPTURE SCHOOL PHOTO DAY 4 June 5 June Assembly Year 4/5 Room 16 Interschool Winter Sport @ Mosman Park PS FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK With NAPLAN complete and PEAC testing finished for another year, the business of teaching and learning continues. At Cottesloe Primary we not only believe it is vital students have their literacy and numeracy and problem solving skills developed to the highest level, we want our students to be contributors to the wider community. To coincide with Walk to School Day on Friday 22nd May, the Green Scene and Travel Smart groups are supporting Soles4Souls, a shoe collecting activity that provides gently worn shoes to children who do not have any shoes. The P&C are supporting the activity by providing a healthy breakfast to those who donate shoes. What a great opportunity for us to support our students in learning about communty issues! On Friday, Cottesloe Primary take on Freshwater Bay Primay as a part of the Winter Interschool Competition. Netball and Minkey will be played at school whilst Soccer and Football is to be played at Harvey Field. Our last interschool fixture against Mosman Park Primary gave us mixed results web: www.cottesloeps.wa.edu.au email: cottesloe.ps@education.wa.edu.au C O T T E S L O E P R I M A R Y S C H O O L N E W S L E T T E R with a loss and a draw with soccer, wins in netball, a loss in football and a split result with Minkey. Importantly, however, our school teams displayed outstanding sportsmanship and endeavour- they made me, their coaches and their teachers proud. Parents are welcome to attend all fixtures. Next week, the Inteschool Cross Country Team will compete against other schools at Jolimont Primary with the first race commencing at 12.45pm. Competitors will be notified later in the week. The Department is focussing stongly on attendance. In the past families that have requested an interm vacation have been required to receive “permission” from the Principal. I have then, usually, given approval and the attendance has been recorded as an “Approved Vacation”. Families who now request the in-term vacation will recieve a note explaning the importance of regular attendance. Families who withdraw students for in- school tutoring are now required to complete an agreement that describes the school’s requirement of the Tutor Provider. Students who are withdrawn for therapies, such as Speech or OT will not be required to complete the form. Thank you for your understanding with these issues. The major P&C fundraiser is the Quiz Night. This year it takes place on the Friday, 12th June. Please support our P&C with this function. It is always a fun night that raises a lot of money for the school and works at making this strong community even tighter. I have my table organised, I know we won’t win but we will have fun! I hope to see you there. On Monday night a small group of the Cottfathers met to make plans for the rest of the year. Some fun Dad and Children events are on the cards including a Camp Out in Dwellingup, a Day at the Motor Races and 10-pin Bowling, plus a couple of Dad get togethers. Cottesloe Fathers, please support the Cottfathers. The School Board meets tonight in the school Library at 6pm. It is always an open meeting and visitors are welcome to attend. Reporting: Semester One Reports will be completed and sent home at the end of this term. Please remember: A Grade means the student is achieving well above the expected standard/level for a student at that year level. B Grade means the student is achieving above the expected standard/level for a student at that year level. C Grade means the student is working and achieving at the expected standard at that year level. A ‘C’ Grade indicates appropriate progress. Although I would not expect that Cottesloe Primary School Students’ grade allocations reflect the regular normative distribution curve, there should be a weighting to the right, a ‘C’ Grade will probably be the most awarded grade. Reports will be distributed on Tuesday, 30th June. web: www.cottesloeps.wa.edu.au email: cottesloe.ps@education.wa.edu.au C O T T E S L O E P R I M A R Y S C H O O L N E W S L E T T E R As always, if there are any questions about your child’s report please speak with your child’s teacher. It came to my attention recently that, by “checking in” to a location or by simply having your Location Services on, you are enabling Facebook to use your photos on public websites. For example, you watch your favourite football team play at Domain Stadium. Whilst there you take a photo and post it on your Facebook page. If either your Location Services are on or you tag where you are, your photo will not only appear on your Facebook page but also on Domain Stadium’s Facebook page – a public site for anyone to view. Without your knowledge, Facebook may have posted photos of you and also your children on public sites. web: www.cottesloeps.wa.edu.au email: cottesloe.ps@education.wa.edu.au C O T T E S L O E P R I M A R Y S C H O O L N E W S L E T T E R What can you do about it? The first place to check is the Settings App on your phone. Go to Privacy and check to see if the Location Services is on. This can simply be turned off. If you use your phone as a GPS this may be affected so you may need to turn it on for Maps only. Secondly, check your Privacy settings on Facebook. Finally, stop and think when you post your next photo. Do you really need to include your location? Caroline Brades IT Co-ordinator CYBER SAFETY SEMINAR Dalkeith Primary School is hosting a Cyber Safety seminar for parents on Tuesday 9 June from 78:30pm. It will be presented by Paul Litherland. Paul worked as a West Australian Police Officer for twenty years, the last five of which were spent working extensively in the field of technology crime; working directly with children and adults who were the victims of online crime. Paul now works full time presenting these seminars to schools in WA. During the session, Paul will share his insight into the dangers of the online world, providing advice and solutions to concerns for our children as they engage with their technological worlds. Paul comes very highly recommended from other schools and community groups around the state. There will be a charge of $5 per family to help cover the cost of the seminar, which will be collected on the night. EDI'S #1 HAIRCUT $6909.55 was raised for The Leukaemia Foundation!!!! I would like to thank Cottesloe Primary School community as well as all my friends and family for supporting me. The Water and Wig Day went really well and everyone had a great time. I would like to thank Mr Dart, the teachers, the other students and the parents who helped me on the day. I hope many more people get out there and give it a go because there is nothing to lose [except for your hair] and it doesn't change the person that you are. Thanks again, Edi web: www.cottesloeps.wa.edu.au email: cottesloe.ps@education.wa.edu.au C O T T E S L O E P R I M A R Y S C H O O L N E W S L E T T E R Dear Parents, From the school’s newsletter you will know that the school’s art teacher, Marguerite Andel has been absent for some time due to illness. Marguerite is loved by many of the students, with art, at least, one of their favourite classes at school. She has an incredible ability to turn all our kids into great artists. Except for the kindy and pre primary kids, who won’t yet have had the pleasure of her classes and her trademark use of gilt finishes to most art pieces. Marguerite literally has a “golden” touch with our kids. Students and parents alike have been missing her and asking after her a lot. Consequently a few parents decided to coordinate some get well gifts for her. Through our art relief teacher (Louise Jones) every child from year 1 to 6 has done an individual piece of art for their Ms Andel, which parent Suzy Venn, collated into a large art folder. It came to 33 pages of art works. We are now asking if parents would like to donate toward a food roster for Marguerite and her family to provide some meals for when she comes out of hospital. Marguerite also normally looks after her mother but can’t at the moment. Meals would be a huge help to her. After consulting Marguerite and other staff, the favoured approach is not for us to prepare and deliver meals ourselves, but donate some money instead for meals to be provided by a local catering company. A red box will be set up at the school’s office marked Ms Andel. If any of you would like to contribute to helping Marguerite please would you deposit some money (cash), in envelopes, into the box as soon as possible, and volunteer parents and staff will coordinate the meals? If you do decide to contribute, perhaps tell your kids as they may be very interested to know of the help you will all be giving to her. Thank you everyone. If anyone has any questions about this, feel free to contact me using my contacts below. However, I’m not privy to details of Ms Andel’s health so I can’t comment on that. Alice is not a morning person so I tend to get up and help the kids with breakfast, help reduce the squabbling amongst the children. Geoff Creelman * Can you take a chore off your wife's hands in order to spend more time with your children? * You might make them breakfast, get them ready for school, or even help out with a school project. Even helping out a couple of times a week could make a big difference in the life of your family. Thoughts? Join the discussion on the website. We love to hear from you too! The Fathering Project Team CRITICAL AND CREATIVE THINKING The BAR Key stands for Bigger Add Replace and is the focus for our thinking this week. The BAR is a step by step strategy for developing innovative and highly unusual products. This type of strategy is often used in today’s high-tech product development labs to create new products for the market. How could we BAR a camping tent? First; Draw a camping tent. Second; Make it Bigger Third; Add something to it Finally; Replace something web: www.cottesloeps.wa.edu.au email: cottesloe.ps@education.wa.edu.au C O T T E S L O E P R I M A R Y S C H O O L N E W S L E T T E R Try using a table; Draw your tent here Now make it bigger Add something to it Replace something I hope you now have a design for the ultimate tent for camping over the long weekend!
