Course Content:
1. Introduction
Course content, geotechnical aspects of various civil engineering projects
2. Soil Characterization
Site investigations, in-situ tests, idealized soil profile, correlations used for soil
parameters and geotechnical design
3. Design of Shallow Foundations
Bearing capacity, settlement
4. Design of Foundations on Swelling and Collapsing (Problematic) Soils
Behavior of swelling and collapsible soils, design considerations
5. Design of Pile Foundations
Pile load tests, pile group settlements: strain integration method and elastic method,
laterally loaded piles, piled-raft systems
6. Design of Braced Excavations and Soil Nail Walls
Braced excavations, bottom heave, piping, excavations supported by struts, soil nail
walls
7. Design of Retaining Walls
Retaining walls supported by extensible and inextensible reinforcements, external and
internal stability checks
8. Design of Preloading and Vertical Drains
9. Design of Vibro Columns
Vibro-compaction columns, vibro-replacement (stone) columns
