Middle East Technical University Civil Engineering Department 2014-15 Spring Semester CE 468 GEOTECHNICAL DESIGN COURSE OUTLINE Instructor: Dr. Zeynep ÇEKİNMEZ (Part-Time) cekinmez@metu.edu.tr Assistant: Burak AKBAŞ (K1-115B) Prerequisite: CE 363 Soil Mechanics CE 366 Foundation Engineering I It is strongly advised you to REMEMBER the theoretical background and terminology of the contents of both above fundamental geotechnical courses; especially the following topics: Standard Soil Mechanics Laboratory Tests, Deformation and Stress Behavior of Cohesionless and Cohesive Soils, Effective and Total Stresses, Shear Stress Terzaghi’s Consolidation Theory, Lateral Earth Pressure Theories (Rankine and Coulomb), Standard Penetration Test, Cone Penetration Test, Pressuremeter Test, Net Foundation Pressure, Bearing Capacity, Shear Strength Immediate and Consolidation Settlement, Load Distribution on Shallow and Pile Foundations Reinforced Earth Walls Pile Capacity Under Vertical Compression Load Course Content: 1. Introduction Course content, geotechnical aspects of various civil engineering projects 2. Soil Characterization Site investigations, in-situ tests, idealized soil profile, correlations used for soil parameters and geotechnical design 3. Design of Shallow Foundations Bearing capacity, settlement 4. Design of Foundations on Swelling and Collapsing (Problematic) Soils Behavior of swelling and collapsible soils, design considerations 5. Design of Pile Foundations Pile load tests, pile group settlements: strain integration method and elastic method, laterally loaded piles, piled-raft systems 6. Design of Braced Excavations and Soil Nail Walls Braced excavations, bottom heave, piping, excavations supported by struts, soil nail walls 7. Design of Retaining Walls Retaining walls supported by extensible and inextensible reinforcements, external and internal stability checks 8. Design of Preloading and Vertical Drains 9.
