Students are invited to participate as an acknowledgment of their talents and academic excellence.
Alyssa Shirley Facer is the daughter of Marion and Tirzah Shirley of Orem, Utah, and is
married to Joseph Facer. She is graduating magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in
mathematics education and is the recipient of the four-year National Merit Scholarship.
When she came to BYU, Alyssa set a goal to take one “unrequired” class every semester, and
she has enjoyed exploring many different interests, ranging from floral design and world
religions to astronomy and American Sign Language. In addition to her love for learning,
she also has a deep love for music, and she sang with the BYU Women’s Chorus from
2011 to 2013. In her free time Alyssa enjoys reading, listening to educational podcasts, and
experimenting in the kitchen. She plans to teach high school mathematics full-time in the fall.
Jessica Charlene Leete is the daughter of Brian and Ann Leete of Beaverton, Oregon. She is
graduating magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics with an applied and
computational mathematics emphasis and a mathematical biology concentration. She is the
recipient of BYU’s Abrelia C. S. Hinckley Scholarship and BYU’s Lloyd Redd Scholarship. She
has worked with Dr. John Dallon since fall 2014 on a mathematical model of cell movement.
This year she was recognized for her research at the College of Physical and Mathematical
Sciences Student Research Conference and is working toward publishing her research. In her
free time Jessica enjoys social dancing, reading science fiction, knitting, and watching Doctor
Who. She has been accepted to the computational biology and bioinformatics PhD program at
Duke University.
Kyle Glen Miller is the son of Glen and Geri Miller of Orem, Utah. He is graduating summa
cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in physics and with minors in math and music. He is
the recipient of the four-year National Merit Scholarship. Kyle has done significant physics
research with five different professors—the bulk of his research with Dr. John Colton—and
he has presented his work at various conferences. He recently presented at the APS March
Meeting. For two and a half years Kyle has played the baritone and tenor saxophones in BYU
Synthesis. He has performed across the country with them, including a three-week tour to
Brazil. He also plays the flute, clarinet, and bass clarinet, which he played in the BYU Wind
Symphony his freshman year. Kyle served a full-time mission in the Nicaragua Managua
North Mission from 2012 to 2014. He served as the secretary for BYU’s chapter of the Society
of Physics Students for one year. He plans to pursue a master’s degree in acoustics at BYU
and later pursue a PhD. In his free time Kyle enjoys playing football, basketball, Ping-Pong,
laser tag, and video games with his friends.
Daniel Capson Woodbury is the son of Paul and Kathleen Woodbury of Parker,
Colorado, and is married to Tonya Woodbury, who is graduating with a master of public
administration. Daniel is graduating summa cum laude with his bachelor’s degree in physics
and with minors in ancient Near Eastern studies and business management. He is the
recipient of the four-year National Merit Scholarship and has been conducting research with
Dr. Scott Bergeson since 2012, working on laser cooling and trapping. As a result of this work,
Daniel received an ORCA grant and was recognized at the APS Four Corners meeting this
past fall. Over the summer he interned at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory modeling
waves in plasma and presented his work at the APS Division of Plasma Physics Annual
Meeting. Daniel was a member of the BYU Men’s Chorus; he served in the California Fresno
Mission from 2010 to 2012; and in his free time he loves to rock climb, camp, and hike. After
graduation he plans to complete a research internship at Sandia National Labs and then
commence graduate studies in physics at the University of Maryland, College Park.
Devyn Norman Woodfield is the son of Scott and Linda Woodfield of Mapleton, Utah, and
is married to Jaclyn Woodfield. He is graduating magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree
in statistics, an emphasis in statistical science, and a master’s degree in statistics. He has been
working with Dr. Gilbert Fellingham since 2012 doing sports analytics for the BYU women’s
soccer team. He is currently writing a related paper with Dr. Fellingham that he hopes to
publish soon. Devyn was a Distinguished Mathematics Student of the Year in 2011 and was
nominated by the BYU Department of Statistics for the most outstanding performance within
the first year of graduate school. He has worked as a statistician for Sewell Direct for the past
two summers and is currently doing a statistical internship for Zions Bank. Devyn served in
the Chile Santiago East Mission from 2009 to 2011. In his free time he enjoys playing soccer,
watching movies, and eating food. He has recently accepted a job to work for Intermountain
Healthcare following graduation.
