Legal, Disciplinary and Reputational Risks of Social Media – Emma Sadleir
Emma Sadleir will be hosting an information talk on Thursday, 7 May in the Hall at 18:00.
By way of background, Emma’s areas of expertise include all aspects of print and electronic media
law, with a particular focus on defamation, privacy and social media law. Having followed a career as
an attorney, much of her work now involves creating social media strategies and policies for corporate
and schools, drafting social media agency agreements and providing training and workshops on
social media law. She also teaches media law to journalists and lawyers and lectures personal
reputation management on various MBA programmes. She has also anchored for Carte Blanche as
well as a legal commentator for BBC during a high profile trial.
Pupils of Grade 5, 6 and 7 will be involved in a talk with Emma on the morning of Thursday, 7 May
and parents from any grade are invited to join us in the evening. Both talks will be addressing the
dangers and implications of social media.
“BE A BUDDY, NOT A BULLY”
As of the Monday, 4 May, our school will be participating in a psycho-educational workshop for the
pupils which will focus on Bullying. We will first work with the Foundation Phase and later with the
Intersen Phase. The objective of the programme is to educate and facilitate topics that encourage
critical thinking and meaningful discussions about the social and emotional impact within different
contexts. The workshop is fun, interactive, and operates at the appropriate developmental stages of
the children. By the end of the programme, the pupils would have had the opportunity to improve
social skills, understand that they have control of their own behaviour and, most importantly,
recognise that they hold the potential to foster a school environment that is friendly and values
socially appropriate behaviour. Parents are welcome to contact the school counsellor for more
information at asurtie@crawfordschools.co.za.
