COMMODORE’S COMMENTS
Well it looks like the weather is warming up and drying out,
the winds have been steady and favorable for the sailing as
well. We had a very good meeting this month with our own
Annie Simpson as guest speaker. Annie is expanding her
sailing resume by enjoying a Barefoot Offshore Charter school
and taking her ASA certification courses at the same time
during her trip to St Vincent, sailing the Islands of the
Grenadines. Annie learned the proper handling of a
catamaran in the open ocean and is now certified to charter.
Thank you Annie and we’re sure you’re having fun on your
current adventure sailing in the BVI.

We postponed the weekend cruise till the following weekend
due to the expected weather. Luckily the weather moved to
the north and never impacted the Charleston area. The cruise
to Steamboat Creek was a great success with 14 boats
attending.
We hope to see everyone on the cruise to Bass Creek / Sandy
Point June 6th and 7th.
We still need volunteers for both the Oyster Roast and Luau.
Please email me if you’re curious what it takes to host one of
these events.

CCC Meeting Minutes--May 7, 2015
The monthly meeting of the Cruising Club of
Charleston was called to order by Commodore Walter
Kueck at 7:30pm on May 7th, 2015 at Ms Rose’s Fine
Food and Cocktails in West Ashley.
Chuck Reynolds introduced his guest, Rick Pfann.
Carrie and Bill Buckner, owners of the vessel Minx,
were introduced as visitors AND new members,
having joined that evening.
Commodore Kueck introduced the speaker for the
evening, member Annie Simson. Her informative and
entertaining presentation detailed a week spent at
Barefoot Offshore Sailing School which she attended
in December, 2014. Aboard a 42 ft. catamaran at Blue
Lagoon, St. Vincent, Annie and the other participants
completed a week-long, intensive offering of 4 ASA
accredited sailing courses: Basic Keelboat, Basic
Coastal Cruising, Bareboat Chartering and Catamaran
Cruising. The courses, sailing the waters of St. Vincent
and the Grenadines, took them to Bequia, Tobago Cays,
Petit St. Vincent, Mayreau and Salt Whistle Bay.
The minutes of the April meeting were approved by a
voice vote.
Membership: Katie Johnson distributed the new
membership roster discs which were prepared by
outgoing Membership chair, Ron Heinz. Katie asked
those present to take the disc home and look at it to
verify accuracy.
Navigation: Chuck Reynolds, Navigator, reported on
the weather for the upcoming weekend’s cruise to
Steamboat Creek. Due to the proximity and estimated
course of Tropical Storm Ana, Chuck proposed to
postpone the cruise for one week to the 16th and 17th of
May. Friendship will be the Host Boat.
A suggestion by Neil Brynes from the floor to
permanently change the date of the May cruise was
entertained. Every year the May cruise falls on
Mother’s Day, affecting cruise attendance. The
proposal will be taken up at the next Steering
Committee meeting.
The winners of the 3 prize drawings were: Dick
Brannon (cash split), Gail Firestone and Rick Pfann.
The meeting was adjourned by Commodore Kueck at
8:09 pm.

Commodore Kueck announced that the sailing vessel,
‘Sunshine’, hit the Charleston Harbor jetty in strong
winds earlier in the day and those aboard were
rescued.
The commodore requested volunteers to help run the
Oyster Roast and Bahama-Rama, plus a call for some
updated club photos for our Facebook page.

HOST BOAT REPORT
To those who didn’t go on the May cruise, we missed you. For those who did go,
there was perfect weather and a nice turnout. We had 14 boats with 32 people in
attendance, several of whom were guests.
Minx made a slight detour which slightly delayed his arrival. Ariel had an overheating
problem but bravely sailed into the anchorage at 8:30.
Members that went on last year’s May cruise to Steamboat Creek will remember the
abundance of Love Bugs! Thankfully this year we had none. Happy hour arrived
with a nice breeze and sunshine galore. The appetizers were wonderful. Mike
Fauss and Chuck Reynolds set of in Mike’s skiff to see if they could tow Ariel into the
anchorage, but the boat we thought was Ariel was another sailboat enjoying their
sail. The evening ended with a spectacular sunset.
The next morning was beautiful. Unfortunately, Barney’s Girl had a mechanical issue
and had to call Towboat US for a return tow. Friendship took Ariel in tow back to
Ross Marine, with Kevin and Patricia continuing on to Cooper River Marina aboard
Friendship.

This month’s guest speaker is Brad Pickel, Executive
Director of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway
Association. The AIWA is known as ‘The Voice of
the Waterway’ by representing the interest of the
ICW through work with Congress, State
Representatives, and members from 39 states and
Canada. Brad will provide an update on the ICW and
some anticipated funding for dredging of the ICW in
South Carolina (Ben Sawyer Bridge is top priority!).

SAIL PLAN – SANDY POINT
This month the cruise is to Sandy Point which is on the Kiawah Island side of the Stono Inlet. The anchorage is
located in Bass Creek. This is a joint cruise with Mariners Cay Yacht Club. Happy hour will be at 5 PM on the beach.
Proceeding from Charleston Harbor, take the ICW south through Wappoo Creek and Elliot Cut. Turn left upon exiting
Elliot Cut, making sure the to take the red day marker on the Stono River to your port side (Do not confuse this
marker with the channel junction marker – red and green – which will also be on your port side as you exit Elliot Cut).
Proceed down the Stono River about eight miles to Sandy Point. The river is well marked. Be careful to make the
turn to your port at the congruence of the Stono and Kiawah rivers. Sandy Point will be on your starboard side as you
approach the ocean and is directly across from the entrance buoys to the Folly River.
Happy hour will be on the beach at Sandy Point. The anchorage is in Bass Creek which is located to your starboard
before getting to Sandy Point. There is a sand bar protruding from the river side of the creek. Deep draft boats might
want to proceed past the entrance to Bass Creek and then approach from seaward favoring the port side of the
entrance. Proceed slowly and watch your depth sounder and you should clear the entrance without difficulty.
