Title: Executive Director
Reports to: President, Board of Trustees
Position Type: Full time, salaried, exempt from overtime
OVERVIEW: The Executive Director (ED) will collaborate with the Board of Trustees to develop and
implement a strategic plan incorporating the vision of the Board and stakeholders and will formulate
practical and achievable steps in the plan that will lead to organizational sustainability and growth. As
the executive leader and the ‘’face” of Marin Art & Garden Center (MAGC) in the extended community,
the ED will actively cultivate mission compliant collaborations while enhancing current relationships
with stakeholders, including resident organizations, donors, sponsors, city and county officials,
volunteers, educators, event producers and their clients, and service organizations. The ED will
collaborate with the Board and staff to identify, design and execute new programs utilizing MAGC’s
unique history, gardens, facilities and collaborative relationships. The ED will maximize opportunities for
new and diverse sources of revenue including, but not limited to short-and long-term rentals, grants,
planned giving programs and major donor cultivation.
RESPONSIBIILTIES:
Leadership
 Support the continuing efforts of the Board to operationalize its vision, transition from an operation
to a governance board structure, build new revenue models, update communications and
strengthen its position as a valued community asset.
 Collaborate with the Board to develop a strategic plan, goals and objectives, and then operationalize
the plan.
 Collaborate with the Board to define the vision, strategies, and tactics that will advance MAGC’s
mission and lead the implementation of the same.
 Inspire and motivate a network of supporters to promote and fulfill the vision.
 Lead the research, design, and implementation of programs that advance MAGC’s mission.
 Position MAGC as a leading and innovative institution.
Board of Trustees
 Work with Board President to provide leadership to the Board in developing and implementing the
vision and mission of the organization utilizing governance best practice models.
 Present timely and accurate written status reports to the Board about agreed upon objectives,
finances, staffing, volunteers, and other relevant issues.
 Work with Board committees and appropriate staff to design, implement and evaluate program,
organizational and financial plans, and policies and procedures.

Financial & Operations Management
 Ensure accurate financial reporting systems including the development of an annual budget,
tracking of monthly expenditures within budget, proper monthly reconciliations of bank accounts,
and timely and accurate reporting at Board meetings.
 Analyze financial information and trends, and provide recommendations as necessary and
appropriate, to remain current with financial reporting requirements.
 Assess and refine the organization’s structure and staffing to maximize effectiveness, quality of
service, and operational capacity.
 Maintain official records and documents, and assure compliance with all relevant legal and fiscal
practices (federal, state and local regulations) of a non-profit corporation.
 Prepare for year-end closing and audits.
 Oversee short-term and long-range strategic operational goals, providing direction and supervision
to the staff to maintain facilities and maximize utilization, ensuring compliance with applicable rules,
regulations, policies, and procedures.
 Manage both short and long term rental programs that may include marketing, negotiating leases,
collecting rents and fees.
 Ensure the effective usage and maintenance of data, I.T. systems and information technology that
are critical to MAGC's success.
Community Relations & Marketing
 Develop and implement the MAGC brand.
 Build relationships and act as MAGC’s spokesperson and advocate, actively promoting the
organization and its value in the community with volunteers, donors, mission compatible
nonprofits, educational institutions and others.
 Create and oversee implementation of Marketing and Communications plans to effectively promote
programs and activities.
Staff and Volunteer Management
 Provide a positive work environment that motivates and encourages staff and volunteers.
 Recruit, train and supervise motivated staff.
 Build an effective team to ensure programmatic, fiscal, and organizational excellence.
 Develop and implement sound Human Resources practices, systems, policies, and procedures that
comply with all legal requirements.
Fund/Resource Development
 Work with the Board and staff to develop sources of income that will sustain and grow the
organization.
 Create and supervise implementation of operations and marketing plans for increased income
through facilities short-term rentals for weddings, events and meetings.
 Create and implement a focused Fundraising Plan with annual growth goals to identify, cultivate,
solicit, and steward major individual, foundation, and corporate donors.
o Manage all aspects of grants including research, cultivation, budget development, writing
proposals, implementation, evaluation, and reporting (along with key staff as appropriate).
o Initiate a planned giving program to attract endowment gifts designed to solidify the longterm health of the organization.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
 Minimum of 7 years of nonprofit management, with at least three years of successful work as an
executive director, in related fields, including but not limited to the arts, horticulture and
environmental conservation.
 Knowledge of and passion for gardens, the arts, and environmental conservation programs.
 Verifiable experience in nonprofit management including business administration and development,
financial controls, organizational management, fundraising, human resources and staff supervision.
 Demonstrated success in program research, design, development, and implementation.
 Proven success as an effective fundraiser: experience developing a comprehensive fund
development program and initiatives, including stewardship of current donors, identification and
cultivation of new major donors, solicitation of foundation and government support, and planning,
developing and overseeing special events. Direct experience in all aspects of grant acquisition and
management.
 Experience collaborating successfully with a Board of Trustees, including Board cultivation, training
and development, and support of best practices in Board governance and leadership.
 Appreciation of organizational history and understanding of the dynamics at MAGC; proven ability
to work effectively with diverse community leaders, Board members, staff and volunteers.
 Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s degree or equivalent work experience preferred.
HOURS: Full time, salaried, exempt from overtime.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to lift 25 pounds and work in an outdoor garden environment.
