The Dialogue will include an opening plenary and reception on the evening of Monday June 15th, to be followed by a full agenda of presentations and panel discussions on Tuesday, June 16. Pre-registration is required and details on how to pre-register will be made available on the ACEF web site. The LMI Clean Energy Business Dialogue is designed to bring together government energy decision-makers from LMI countries (Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam), U.S. experts in renewable energy, and U.S. renewable and clean energy companies to discuss clean energy solutions that promote energy security and sustainability in the Mekong sub-region. The LMI government representatives will offer perspectives on renewable energy needs and opportunities in their markets. U.S. government renewable energy experts will participate, along with experts from the Export-Import Bank, Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), and the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) to present project development and finance opportunities available through the U.S. government. The Dialogue will include panels and presentations with Southeast Asian and U.S. government officials along with private sector experts that will cover the range of clean energy sectors: Solar PV, Wind, Biomass, Mini-grid Systems, and Energy Efficiency; as well as and opportunities for Renewable Energy Finance and technical assistance from U.S. Government Finance Programs. There will also be a keynote speech during the June 15 plenary by a senior U.S. State Department official. Background: Energy consumption among the LMI member countries (Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam) continues to rise dramatically. Electricity demand in Southeast Asia is forecast to grow by nearly four percent annually through 2040. To meet growing demand, Southeast Asian nations may need to add 138 GW in capacity by 2025. Total investment in Southeast Asia power sectors could reach $449 billion by 2025. In the Lower Mekong alone, Thailand’s electricity use is forecast to grow by 30 percent over the next decade, while Vietnam’s electricity consumption is expected to nearly double between 2010 and 2020. Renewable and cleaner energy, including energy-efficiency technologies and measures, can help stabilize budgets, reduce energy imports, and lower carbon emissions in the region, while providing innumerable business opportunities. This clean energy business delegation will display U.S. innovation, technology, and best practices to LMI government decision-makers to help bridge the gap between needed energy sector investments and companies, project developers, and investors that can help bring renewable and clean energy solutions to the Mekong sub-region.
