Post Show REPORT 2015 Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability: The Humanitarian Aid and Development Perspectives DIHAD: The Networking Platform for Aid & Development Workers and Suppliers of the Humanitarian Sector The 12th edition of the Dubai International Humanitarian Aid & Development Conference & Exhibition was held on 24 - 26 March 2015 under the patronage of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice- President & Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. DIHAD 2015 capitalized on existing partnerships and past discussions in an attempt to arrive at a number of constructive conclusions. The event also brought together international agencies, governmental and non-governmental organizations, foundations & charities, the media and academia, the corporate sector, Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies as well as individual practitioners and experts to make valuable contributions to the ongoing global discussions on development goals, climate change, disaster reduction, and best practices in the realm of humanitarian assistance. The Dubai EXPO 2020 sub-themes of “Opportunity”, “Mobility” and “Sustainability” were the focus, while the variety of perspectives on these reflect the diversity, in terms of knowledge and experience, of the distinguished participants at the Conference. While presentations by high-level experts provided the substantive backbone to all Sessions, the Chairpersons ensured there was due interaction among the speakers and panelists at all times. 3 Day session themes: î Disaster reduction and preparedness – opportunities î Environmental protection and climate change – opportunities î Moving relief items, where/when required, efficiently î The forced displacement of persons, causes and consequences î Sustainable development, what happens after 2015? î Water and Energy: will we have enough tomorrow? HE Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi said: “Increased mobilisation of resources around early warning for disaster reduction and preparedness strategies will allow us to respond more effectively to future outbreaks. Mobility as a theme serves as a fitting mantra for the humanitarian and development communities. Whether actors are mobilizing funding resources, or mobilizing disaster reduction and preparedness strategies; this is an area in which we can and should always be improving. Let us collectively mobilize for increased impact of our aid.” Objectives Achieved “Our participation had a dual goal: to meet with additional partners & vendors to expand our network & procurement portfolio. DIHAD is The workshop “Addressing forced displacements- new actors, opportunities and challenges” in collaboration with UNOCHA was specially designed for humanitarians and private sector working in disaster preparedness, emergency response and logistics. a platform for professionals from UN Agencies, international missions, NGOs, procurement, governments and other global players to network and foster relations for a unified front towards overcoming issues facing the humanitarian efforts. The exhibition was held in parallel to 3 days of conference with over 10,800 visitors from across the world. B2B Platform: Exhibitors & selected delegates interested in building networks for future partnerships had the unique opportunity to interact & discuss collaborative efforts that can be undertaken, nurture relations with procurement officials from UN Agencies, NGOs and service providers from across the world. Special Sessions î The role of NGOs in the provision of humanitarian assistance in today’s crisis environments î The role of NGOs, as partners in development assistance “The session Moving Relief items was very important due to money constraints and growing demand, so the session was very useful with good discussion. UNHCR has made a frame agreement of 10,000 units with the social enterprise Better Shelter. “Being my first time at DIHAD, I am extremely pleased as this is a great platform for all relief & development players for future roadmap plans.” Shadi Hammadeh Director of Environment & Sustainable Development Unit, American University of Beirut Innovation Area: DIHAD 2015 launched the ‘Innovation Area’ wherein products such as IKEA Shelter, New Specification and Fire Retardation, Light and Electricity Solutions during emergency were respectively launched by UNHCR – IKEA, National Tent House & Electricienssans-frontieres.org. With presentations and discussions the innovation area got together participants from the industry on the latest innovations that can help improve serving people in need during times of distress. Effective Communication through Marketing & Promotion The exhibition primarily facilitated the procurement needs of the regional markets, including the Middle East & Northern Africa and parts of Asia.
