Sexual Assault Awareness Month – Denim Day and Candlelight Vigil Wednesday, April 29th
Denim Day has its roots in a 1992 Italian court case where a driving instructor convicted of raping a teenage
girl successfully defended himself on appeal by arguing that the girl’s jeans were so tight, he would not have
been able to remove them without her consent. This sparked widespread protest and the case was
eventually overturned. Today, Denim Day is an annual event in which denim is worn in support of survivors of
sexual violence. It is also an international day designed to protest attitudes which blame the victims of sexual
violence or excuse the behavior of the perpetrator.
All ACC students and employees are encouraged to wear denim on April 29. At 8:00 p.m., a gathering will
be held in the Besser Tech Courtyard to hear brief remarks and spoken word performances moderated by
Mary Thurston of WATZ and followed by a candlelight ceremony to honor survivors and conclude the
activities for the month.
