Job Opportunity: Curriculum Development Consultant EdLabs seeks qualified curriculum consultants to develop an innovative guided reading curriculum for 8th grade students. EdLabs has partnered with the NYC Department of Education to implement daily intensive reading tutoring during expanded school day programming in 19 middle schools in New York City. In 2014-2015, tutoring was offered to 6th and 7th grade students. In 2015-2016, we hope to also offer it to 8th grade students. The tutoring program is based on a research-proven model from school turnaround projects in Houston and Denver. Selected student participate in daily guided reading tutorials with the same tutor for one hour each day, during ExpandED after-school programming run by The After School Corporation (TASC) or during a strategic literacy period during the traditional school day. In order to maximize the effectiveness of the tutoring corps, consultants will develop curriculum guides for a selected set of high-quality age-appropriate books that tutors will use to run guided reading sessions with students. EdLabs is currently seeking consultants who are interested in developing history books about topics such as the 1920s, the Beatles and Lincoln. Consultants contracted to do this work will be expected to develop chapter-by-chapter curriculum guides for this guided reading tutoring curriculum according to a template provided to them by EdLabs. Qualifications - At least a bachelor’s degree and two years of teaching or equivalent experience developing curriculum - Demonstrated passion for young adult and/or children’s books - Familiarity with strategies to help students understand difficult texts - Excellent planning and organizational skills with a proven ability to execute tasks efficiently - Strong communication skills; including clear and precise writing - Flexibility, adaptability, and comfort with complexity and change Application Process - Submit resume to jobs@edlabs.harvard.edu with subject line “Curriculum Development Consultant: History” Prepare sample chapter assignment after receiving assignment via email. Assignment will be to prepare a short sample of the reading curriculum for a history passage specified by EdLabs. 1. Consultant Services. The curriculum includes: questions to activate prior knowledge, thinking tasks, vocabulary words and definitions, comprehension questions with exemplary student responses and scaffolding questions, Common Core alignments, discussion questions, extension readings, writing prompts, comprehension quizzes, vocabulary quizzes, and answer keys. All questions, vocabulary, and ancillary materials will be designed for 8th grade students performing at a 4th-8th grade level according to the Degrees of Reading Power assessment. 2. Payment Consultants will be paid according to work completed. A completed curriculum guide for a given book is defined as having turned in a draft of the plans to EdLabs, making modifications to draft plans suggested by EdLabs, and having revised plans approved by EdLabs. Payment for completing the curriculum guide for a given book will depend upon the length of the book as follows: Type of Book Payment Example Physical Book $5 per page Someone who completes (including approvals) the master curriculum documents for a 100 page physical book would earn $500 (100*$5) E-book $7.50 per page Someone who completes (including approvals) the master curriculum documents for a 100 page e-book would earn $750 (100*$7.50) In order to be paid, curriculum developers must submit curriculum by the deadline specified in their contract. Deadlines will be based on start date. Revisions must be completed 5 business days after EdLabs sends back comments.
