Position Specification Senior Director for Communications and Public Affairs Economic Innovation Group POSITION SPECIFICATION ORGANIZATION NAME: Economic Innovation Group POSITION TITLE: Senior Director for Communications and Public Affairs REPORTS TO: Executive Director THE ORGANIZATION: The Economic Innovation Group (EIG) is an ideas laboratory and advocacy organization dedicated to forging a more dynamic, entrepreneurial, and innovative U.S. economy for the 21st century. Headquartered in Washington, D.C. and led by an experienced, bipartisan team, EIG convenes leading experts from the public and private sectors, develops original policy research, and works to advance creative legislative proposals that will bring new jobs, investment, and economic growth to communities across the nation. THE ROLE Reporting to the Executive Director, the Senior Director for Communications and Public Affairs will develop and lead EIG’s overall communications, press, and public relations strategies and contribute to all areas of the organization’s strategic planning process. This person will directly manage communications, press activities, media relations, and public events that will promote the brand and reputation of the organization. Specific responsibilities include the following: • Develop and execute the organization’s communications plan to advance its brand, broaden awareness of its policy agenda, and increase the visibility of its activities across key stakeholder audiences. • Promote press opportunities for the organization’s founders, advisors, and executive staff while working to ensure messaging consistency by all organizational spokespersons. • Actively cultivate and manage press relationships (including national, D.C., and financial and technology sectors) to ensure coverage surrounding all organization activities, events, and announcements. • Coordinate the development and distribution of all communications products, including talking points, speeches, press releases, and other materials as needed. • Serve as the executive editor for the organization’s website and lead the development of online content and outreach through social media channels. • Manage outside communications consultants as necessary within budgetary parameters. • Oversee the development and allocation of the organization’s communications budget. 8484 WESTPARK DRIVE, SUITE 630 | MCLEAN, VIRGINIA 22102 | 703.584.3210 | LOCHLINPARTNERS.COM POSITION SPECIFICATION Economic Innovation Group – Senior Director for Communications and Public Affairs Page 2 KEY REQUIREMENTS The ideal candidate will be committed to EIG’s economic policy agenda. S/he will bring strong communications credentials, with a minimum of 10-15 years of experience and a deep set of contacts in Washington. The new Senior Director will be a creative communicator and s/he will have an appreciation for working with elite, high level audiences. S/he will also have the political acumen necessary to effectively manage the many stakeholders that EIG interacts with on a regular basis. Success in this role will mean achieving meaningful impact, i.e., ensuring EIG is relevant to the important political debate(s) about America’s economic future and helping to build EIG as a platform for creative policy thinking. Specific qualifications include: • Entrepreneurial spirit and desire to work in a true start-up environment. • A high level of intellectual curiosity coupled with broad knowledge of the major economic issues facing our country today. • Ability to excel in a highly collaborative and tight-knit team of senior organizational executives. • Demonstrated skill in proactively building relations with top tier reporters and editors and in successfully positioning subject matter with the media. • Extensive oral and written communications experience through a variety of print and online communications media. • Strong background in policy communications – a proven capacity to grasp complex policy issues and translate them in a manner that is accessible to target audiences. • Leadership experience in managing a comprehensive strategic communications, media relations, and branding program. • Innovative thinker who offers creative approaches for how to utilize social media and other emerging communications tools. • Demonstrated capacity to coach and support senior leaders as organizational spokespersons. • A pragmatist with a bipartisan political orientation. • Self-motivated, creative, organized, and deeply committed to personal and organizational excellence. EDUCATION A Bachelor’s degree is required. A Master’s degree is preferred.
