Glencairn Golf Club 2015 Member Handbook
Glencairn Golf Club
2015 Member Handbook
Message from Craig Cupido, Your Director of Operations
There is nothing better than the beginning of the golf season. After the long Canadian winter, we are all in
anticipation of warmer weather, longer days, and sunshine. As golfers, we also create our own internal images
of long drives that find the middle of the fairway, precision approaches that stop feet from the pin, and the
putts that find the center of the cup. And now the time is here to enjoy your Home Club and make those
dreams a reality!
To enhance that reality, your management team has been hard at work over the last few months to ensure
your membership experience at Glencairn continues to improve.
The Member events at Glencairn continue to evolve. In 2015, we have built on the success of the 2014
Member event schedule by continuing with our own version of the PGA TOUR FedEx Cup, The Gryphon Cup.
Much of the work over the winter months was focussed on making our event schedule better. The Captains
Committee has been pivotal in this process, working to make our Member events the best possible
experience. We feel that we have a good balance of competitive and social events that will encourage
participation from Members of every level of playing ability. To see the full schedule of events, visit the Club
calendar at glencairn.clublink.ca and start planning your summer.
You have no doubt seen our new membership message: “There’s never been a more rewarding time to be a
ClubLink Member!” And that’s very true. ClubLink Members who refer a family member, friend or colleague
who becomes a full golf Member (26 years of age or older), prior to June 15 at any Club, will receive a credit to
their house account in 2015 and 2016 provided both members remain active full golf and upon payment of
annual dues. If the new Member joins a Silver-level Club you will receive a $350 credit in 2015 AND $350 in
2016. If the new Member joins a Gold- or Platinum-level Club you will receive a $500 credit in 2015 AND $500
in 2016. If the new Member joins a Prestige-level Club, those credits increase to $750 each. Should the
person you refer join after June 15, but before the end of the 2015 golf season, the appropriate credits will be
applied in 2016 and 2017.
There are many other membership initiatives for 2015 such as deferred membership payment options,
memberships for juniors and intermediates, our new system-wide cart plan, expanded food and beverage
minimum and discretionary gratuities for our servers in the bistro and on the course. And how about our
Introduction to Golf program for less frequent or new golfers who aren’t ready to commit to a full ClubLink
membership? It’s an unbelievable value!
Complimentary Family Twilight benefits are now offered to full golf Members' spouses, children and
grandchildren up to 15 years of age at all Gold-, Platinum- and Prestige-level Clubs. Full golf Members of
Platinum- and Prestige-level Clubs can now take advantage of complimentary restricted junior memberships
for children and grandchildren up to 15 years of age in addition to their Family Twilight benefits.
Feel free to ask me about ClubLink’s membership initiatives or contact a membership consultant at 1-800-6611818 or membershipsales@clublink.ca.
And if there is a junior in your family, help them get into the greatest game in the world through our various
clinics and camps. ClubLink is also proud to offer the Junior Performance Centre at The Club at Bond Head in
conjunction with The Golf Lab. Ask for details in the golf shop.
If you are thinking about a summer vacation, please consider Rocky Crest Golf Resort and Sherwood Inn in
Muskoka or Le Maitre de Mont-Tremblant and its partner hotel, Fairmont Tremblant, in Quebec. Remember,
ClubLink Members get preferred pricing!
But don’t stay away too long! We need our Members to participate in the race for the ClubLink Cup. The
ClubLink Cup is a season-long competition in which Clubs accumulate points at each qualifying ClubLink
Member championship. Such events include the Men’s and Ladies’ Interclub Championship, the Tournament
of Champions, Mixed Member Championship, Infiniti Men’s Night Championship, TaylorMade-adidas Junior
Interclub and the Generation Cup.
Please take the time to review the details of the handbook. If you have questions, feel free to ask any of our
golf shop staff.
Thanks again for choosing Glencairn as your Home Club. We are always looking to improve and provide you
with the best possible experience every day.
Sincerely,
Craig Cupido
Director of Operations

DIVOTS
Divots grow back faster when the actual piece of turf is returned to the spot where the divot was taken. We
ask that all Members and their guests replace all their divots, where possible, with the turf that was
removed. When this isn’t possible, please use the sand and seed provided on the pull carts or power carts.
BALL MARKS
1. Use a pronged ball-mark repair tool (preferably), or a knife, key or tee.
2. Insert at the edge of the pitch mark. Do not insert the tool within the depression itself.
3. Bring the edges together with a gentle twisting motion, but don’t lift the centre. This will damage the root
system. Try not to tear the grass.
4. Smooth the surface with a putter or your foot. You are done when it’s a surface that you would putt
over.
5. You should always repair your pitch marks, but time permitting, you should repair any other ball marks
you see.
VENTING
We will vent all greens several times in 2015. Venting solves two problems. Venting facilitates soil gas
exchange and water penetration by creating holes or “vents” in the thatch and soil. We will use a .25 or .35
inch outside diameter solid tine, depending on the severity of the problem. Greens will be cut and rolled
following venting. The impact to the playability of the surface will be insignificant as no cores are removed.
AERIFICATION
Aeration is an extremely important maintenance practice. Although it results in a temporary disruption of the
green aeration improves water penetration into the soil, reduces soil compaction, stimulates turfgrass root
growth, helps control thatch build-up, and improves overall growing conditions. At Glencairn our strategy is
to core aerate twice per year and solid tine (vent) several times per year.
Similar to 2014 we will core aerate all the greens following the Club Championship Aug. 4-7, weather
permitting. If it is too hot, overcast or raining, we will be forced to reschedule. Our reschedule date will be
the week following Labour Day or Sept. 8-11. We will use a .300 inch inside diameter hollow tine.
Aerification holes will be on two-inch centres. Greens will be topdressed, brushed, cut, rolled, fertilized and
watered immediately following aerification. They will be cut and rolled repeatedly in the following days until
recovered.
We have scheduled our second core aerification of ALL greens for the weeks following our final Member
event, namely, the Men's Night Closing. This will commence, weather permitting, Oct. 20. We will be using
a .500 inch inside diameter hollow tine. Aerification holes will be on 2 inch centres. Greens will be
topdressed, brushed, rolled, fertilized and watered immediately following aerification. They will
be topdressed and rolled until they stop growing for the season and as weather permits.
Remember to replace your divots, fix ball marks, and rake bunkers…We will do the rest!
Have a great season.

All scorecards must be signed and attested. Submitting an incorrect scorecard will result in
disqualification.
All events will take place rain or shine. No exceptions will be made unless the golf course is closed.
All rounds played in competition must adhere to the Golf Canada Rules of Golf.
Each player must carry no more than 14 clubs. All clubs must conform to Golf Canada guidelines.
In stroke-play competition, every ball must be holed out, (i.e., no mulligans or gimmies).
If any decision is unclear on the golf course, play two balls and the rules committee will judge
accordingly. (The two-ball rule does not apply for match-play competition).
The Golf Canada Rules of Golf will govern all play. The Handicap and/or Captains Committee shall
have the final decision on all claims and disputes. The competition is deemed to have closed when the
trophy has been presented to the winner or, in the absence of a prize ceremony, when all scores have
been approved by a member of the Professional Staff.
Tournament entries must be received a minimum of 72 hours prior to the event.
Handicap factors are frozen as of 72 hours prior to any event.
Guests playing in any event must provide a valid Golf Canada handicap factor at least 5 days prior to
the event or they must play off a zero course handicap.
Tournament Pace of Play Guidelines
Glencairn slow play rules and penalties are based on what the Club calls "bad times." Let's say Group X has
fallen off the pace and is out of position (meaning, too much space; usually a full hole has opened between
this group and the group ahead of it).
A staff member will notify all players in the group that the group is being put "on the clock." Once a group is on
the clock, the staff member begins timing each player. Once that timing of a group begins, each player has 60
seconds to play each stroke.
A player who can't meet those requirements is informed that he has a "bad time." A bad time can, in theory,
lead to penalty strokes or even disqualification from an event. The slow play penalty process goes like this:
• The player receives a warning for his/her first "bad time" of the round.
• If he/she records a second bad time in the same round, the player gets a one-point/stroke penalty.
• If he/she records a third bad time in the same round, the player gets a two-point/stroke penalty.
• If he/she records a fourth bad time in the same round, the player is disqualified.
Member Event Playoff Format
GROSS COMPETITION – Sudden-death format will be used for all gross competitions. Players will return to
the 18th hole for the playoff. If still tied, players will proceed to the first hole and continue play until a winner is
declared.
NET COMPETITION – The aggregate playoff format will be used to decide the winner if there is a tie for first
place only. Players will return to the first hole and play three holes. The player with the lowest total net score
for those three holes will be the winner. If still tied after three holes, extra holes using the sudden-death format
will be used, continuing from the last hole played.
MATCH PLAY – All match play will follow this playoff format (net or gross). Players will continue their match
th
after the 18 hole to the first hole and play sudden-death until a winner is declared. If a match is played during
a shotgun, the playoff will commence on the next hole, (e.g., if you start the match on the fourth hole and finish
on the third, the playoff will commence on the fourth hole and proceed on successive holes, if needed, until a
winner is declared.) All handicap strokes will be used, matching the original 18 holes.
DARKNESS - If either player decides it is too dark to continue the match, the next hole in sequence will be a
shoot-out from 150 yards, closest to the pin for men, and 120 yards closest to the pin for Ladies. Alternatively,
both players can agree to reschedule the match as long as they can finish it before the deadline.

Course Care and Etiquette
Enjoying the game of golf is a shared experience. It is important to respect your fellow Members and the
course by always doing the following:
Please replace all divots with the displaced turf when possible; otherwise fill with sand and seed that is
provided on carts and par-3 tee decks.
Rake bunkers thoroughly.
Play “ready golf.” Know when it is your turn and be prepared to hit your shot.
Adhere to daily cart rules and the guidelines given to you at the first tee by the starter.
Be aware of the time par for our course and communicate pace of play expectations to your guests.
Fix ball marks correctly
Do not drive carts in fescue and avoid areas that have been roped or staked.
Carts must be FULLY on path near all tees and greens.
CART TRAFFIC CONTROL POST PROGRAM
As you leave the tee on the cart path on all par-4 and par-5 holes (par-3s are always cart path only), you will
notice an entry post beside the path. As soon as you have passed the entry post, please enter the fairway
immediately and remain on it until you see the exit post close to the green. Please exit the fairway as close to
the exit post as possible (not closer to the green) and return directly to the cart path. Both entry and exit posts
will be moved on a daily basis so the cart traffic patterns can be monitored and resulting wear patterns
minimized.
All Members and guests will be reminded of the Cart Traffic Control Post Program by the starter and it will be
monitored by course staff, including player assistants. Your cooperation is anticipated and appreciated.
Club Rules and Member Information
All ClubLink policies are explained fully in the Members Only section of your Club web site.
The following is for general reference only.
ALCOHOL SERVICE POLICY
Members and guests are strictly prohibited from bringing their own alcohol onto a ClubLink property in
accordance with all applicable liquor licensing regulations. ClubLink's Responsible Alcohol Service policy is
posted at each alcohol service location and available for review. All alcohol service staff are fully trained in the
proper alcohol service techniques and are supported by management while doing so. Any violation of these
policies may result in suspension or termination of membership.
CELLULAR PHONES/MOBILE DEVICES
Cell phones are permitted on ClubLink courses and in clubhouses. Members and guests are encouraged to
exercise discretion of use such that golfing/dining experiences are not diminished for other Members and
guests.
CHECK-IN
Members must check in at the golf shop prior to using the golf amenities at any ClubLink Club, and must carry
their membership card with them at all times. Members must present their membership card when making any
purchases on their ClubLink account.
DRESS CODE
Appropriate golf attire must be worn at all times, both on the golf course and in the clubhouse.
Appropriate golf course attire includes collared golf shirts, turtlenecks, or mock-neck shirts and golf slacks or
golf shorts. Shirts must be tucked in at all times unless the style of the shirt dictates otherwise. Caps can be
worn with the peak forward. Golf shoes or any athletic shoes without spikes are required while on the golf
course.
Inappropriate golf course attire includes jeans of any kind, gym shorts, track or sweat suits, beach wear,
ripped or frayed clothing of any kind, shoes with metal cleats or spikes.
Jeans may be worn in the clubhouse, provided they are not ripped or frayed. If you are unsure about your
attire, feel free to speak to a manager at the Club for further direction.
HANDICAPPING
The purpose of the Golf Canada handicap system is to make the game of golf more enjoyable by enabling
players of differing abilities to compete on an equitable basis. The system provides a fair Golf Canada course
handicap for each player, regardless of ability, and adjusts a player’s Golf Canada handicap factor up or down
as the player’s game changes. At the same time, the system disregards high scores that bear little relation to
the player’s potential ability and promotes continuity by making a Golf Canada handicap factor continuous
from one playing season or year to the next. A Golf Canada handicap factor is useful for all forms of play.
Every golf club that issues Golf Canada handicap factors to its Members must appoint a Handicap Committee.
The committee is responsible for ensuring that Club Members who enter handicapped events have complied
with the Golf Canada handicap system. Your handicap factor is the number, to one decimal point, beside your
name in the handicap computer in the golf shop. Handicap factors are used to ensure, as close as possible, a
level playing field for all entrants in handicapped events. (Most Member events use the handicapping system).
To ensure that your factor accurately reflects the quality of your play, you must enter ALL the scores you make
during the active golf season into the handicap computer. (Scores can also be entered online at
www.golfcanada.ca.) In the Ontario/Quebec Region, the active season extends from April 15 to Oct. 31.
Rounds played out of season in Ontario are not to be posted. If you play outside of your provincial handicap
season somewhere else where golf is in season (e.g., our Florida Region), the scores for those rounds must
also be posted. Please visit www.rcganetwork.org for more information on posting out-of-country scores.)
It is important that you enter your scores on a timely basis, ideally immediately after each round, but no later
than six days after completing a round.
You must enter scores for partial rounds as well as complete rounds. If you play more than six holes but fewer
than 13 holes during a round, a nine-hole score should be posted. If you play 13 or more holes, an 18-hole
score should be posted. A procedure exists for “completing” partial rounds. If you do not know the procedure,
contact one of the committee members or the staff in the golf shop. Please ensure you adjust your score using
Equitable Stroke Control. For more information on handicaps, go to www.golfcanada.ca and click ”Rules &
Handicap.”
A number of Club events qualify as tournaments. Scores for these events are posted separately from regular
scores. If in doubt about the status of an event or of how to post these scores, check with either a committee
member or the golf shop.
The Handicap Committee will meet regularly to review the scores you have posted. Your scores in
handicapped events will be compared to your scores in regular play. A check may be made to see that you
have entered a score for all the days on which your name appears on the tee sheets for all ClubLink courses.
If discrepancies are noticed during our review, you will be contacted by the committee for a review of your
handicap factor.
If you should have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the handicap chairman or the
director of operations.
NON-COMPLIANCE POLICY
If Home Club Members wish to entertain Non-Home Club Members in Home Club designated tee times on
Saturday, Sunday and holiday mornings prior to 11 a.m., a 1:1 ratio of Home Club Members to Non-Home
Club Members is required. In the event a Home Club Member wishes to entertain additional Associate Club
Members in an applicable Home Club designated time, a “non-compliance fee” of $60 will be charged to the
Member making the reservation.
PACE OF PLAY POLICY
Our time par is listed on our scorecards for your reference. The role of our play coordinators is to ensure a
proper pace of play, which results in a more enjoyable experience for all golfers. Please respect their role and
cooperate with their efforts to ensure an enjoyable golf experience for all.
PRACTICE FACILITY
Always check in with the golf shop prior to using the practice facilities. Please obey posted signage and stay
within the space allocated and only hit in the direction of the targets provided.
TEE IT FORWARD
By golfing from tees not suited to their driving distance, many amateur golfers end up playing yardages that, if
compared proportionately, would intimidate the best players in the world. If you’re an average male midhandicapper playing from 6,700 yards, that’s like a PGA TOUR pro playing from 8,100 yards!
The TEE IT FORWARD initiative is aimed at helping golfers have the best possible experience on the golf
course by playing from the set of tees best suited to their abilities, determined by their average driving
distance. Initiated by the USGA, PGA of America, Golf Canada and the PGA of Canada, TEE IT FORWARD is
endorsed by ClubLink because of its many benefits:
-Faster rounds, improved pace of play
-Experiencing the course at the same relative proportions a PGA TOUR or LPGA player would
-Using mid-irons for approach shots instead of hybrids and long irons
- Better and more realistic scoring
-Fewer lost balls, less time spent looking for them
-Fewer shots, less frustration
-Overall increased enjoyment of the game
The following are TEE IT FORWARD guidelines for selecting tees based on a golfer’s average driving
distance:
Driver Distance
275 yards
250 yards
225 yards
200 yards
175 yards
150 yards
125 yards
100 yards
Recommended Yardages
6,700 - 6,900 yards
6,200 - 6,400 yards
5,800 - 6,000 yards
5,200 - 5,400 yards
4,400 - 4,600 yards
3,500 - 3,700 yards
2,800 - 3,000 yards
2,100 - 2,300 yards
For more information on why you should TEE IT FORWARD, ask in your golf shop.
TEE-TIME CANCELLATIONS
Non-weather-related tee-time cancellations are required no less than 24 hours prior to play. To cancel a player
or an entire tee time, Members may contact LinkLine or the golf shop directly. In the event the cancellation
policy has not been adhered to, a $60 “no show” fee will be charged to the Member who made the reservation.
RECIPROCAL PLAYING PRIVILEGES
Silver Members have access to Silver, Gold and Core Daily Fee* Clubs without a reciprocal fee and subject
to availability. Silver Club Members have reciprocal access to Platinum Member Clubs for a reciprocal fee of
$55 and Prestige Member Clubs for a reciprocal fee of $80. In the event a Silver Member introduces three
paying guests at one time, the reciprocal fee is waived when playing at Prestige and Platinum Member Clubs.
The reciprocal fee is also waived at Platinum Member Clubs if the Silver Member's Club is closed the entire
day for a non-Member, full-shotgun event.
Gold Members have access to Platinum, Gold, Silver and Core Daily Fee* Clubs without a reciprocal fee and
subject to availability. Gold Club Members have reciprocal access to Prestige Member Clubs for a reciprocal
fee of $80. In the event a Gold Member introduces three paying guests at one time, the reciprocal fee is
waived when playing at Prestige Member Clubs. The reciprocal fee is also waived at Prestige Member Clubs if
the Gold Member's Club is closed for the entire day for a non-Member, full-shotgun event.
Prestige and Platinum Members have access to Prestige, Platinum, Gold, Silver and Daily Fee* Clubs,
without a reciprocal fee and subject to availability.

BEFORE YOU POST
What Scores Do I Post?
Incomplete or Conceded Holes
If 13 or more holes have been played, you must
enter an 18 hole score. If 7 to 12 holes have
been played, you must enter a 9 hole score. In
either case, any holes not played during your
round shall be scored as the par of the hole plus
any handicap strokes you are entitled to receive
on the unplayed holes.
If you did not complete a hole or were conceded a
stroke(s) on a hole, you must record your most likely
score for that hole. The most likely score consists of
the number of strokes already taken plus, in your best
judgment, the number of strokes that you would need
to hole out from that position more than half the time.
There is no limit to the number of unfinished holes you
may have in a round. This concept allows for you to
post scores made in Match Play where conceded
strokes are common.
Tournament Score
Should the score you are entering be designated
as a tournament score? A tournament score is a
score made in a competition organized and
conducted by a committee. The committee in
charge shall determine and announce in
advance whether a score posted from the
competition shall be posted as a tournament
score.
9 Hole Rounds
9 hole scores must be posted. A 9 hole score will be
combined with another 9 hole score that is not older
than the oldest 18 hole score in your scoring record. If
there is not another 9 hole score in your scoring
record, your 9 hole score will remain in waiting for
combination with your next 9 hole score.
Equitable Stroke Control (ESC)
Have you adjusted your gross score using Equitable Stroke Control (ESC)? ESC is the downward adjustment of
individual hole scores for handicap purposes in order to make Handicap Factors more representative of a
player’s potential scoring ability. ESC sets a maximum number that you can post on any hole depending on
your Course Handicap. There is no limit to the number of holes on which you may adjust your score.
