It was 60 degrees today and we‘ll be out detecting tomorrow! Can‘t wait! Now is the time to get together with others in the club and go out detecting. This is one thing I keep stressing; say hello to the person next to you at the next meeting and make arrangements to go out detecting. Get their phone number or e-mail address and meet up with them. I really think it is one of the best parts of metal detecting. Yes, we all hope to make some great finds, but the socializing is the best part of an organization like this. Take the time to meet some great people, get to know them a little and go out detecting. Don’t miss out! We are going to try to get a few group excursions set up for the summer. We do need help from club members to set up these detecting days. Remember if you have permission to detect a farm field or some other private property, ask if you can bring a few members with you for a day of detecting. Members keep asking for these group days so let’s get a few set up. Again, we do need your help with this! This month we have Tony Carlotta coming to our monthly meeting to help you identify colonial coins and large cents that you have. Tony is a real expert, so don’t miss out on this opportunity! Please do not bring currency, silver coins or modern coins. Let’s have fun with this but please don’t waste Tony’s time. The first 10 oz. silver bar raffle has started out great! Make sure you get your tickets. Silver prices are back up a little and you just can’t go wrong with it. At the next meeting we will pick our first winner and start the raffle for the second 10 oz. silver bar. We should have the 2015 Club Hunt Form up on the web site shortly after the April meeting. This is our 45th annual picnic hunt. Remember the ‘early bird’ prize that we give away each year and get your registration done early. Also get ready for the gold coin raffle. It will be given away at the club hunt! This has always been one of the most popular raffles we have each year. The club hunt is only 6 months away. Not to early to start thinking ahead! Happy detecting Tim Myers REMINDER: The May meeting will be held on Wednesday May 27th due to Memorial Day. Come join us at the monthly meetings, 7 pm at the SW Pitts Fire Company located at 226 Old Loudon Road in Latham, for a great time. Don’t miss the chance to meet with other club members to exchange tips, show off your finds and maybe win one of the nice coins available in the coin raffles. April 2015 Minutes of the February 2014 ESMDA Meeting Treasurer’s Report - reported balance of $1,070.79 – motion made and passed to accept the minutes & report. Old Business: Review list of suggestions for 2015 Club Hunt & Picnic New Business: Nominations of Club Officers: Tim Myers President, Bob Francis Secretary, Lisa Conrad Treasurer and George Smith for Vice President. George appreciated the nomination but asked to think it over until the April meeting. 50-50 Winner: Pete Stofa Coin Raffle: 1709 Two Reale – Angelo Primo 1743 George II ½ Penny – Pete Stofa 1857 Flying Eagle Cent – Marie Fryc 1897 V Nickel – Jim Race 1909 Barber Half Dollar – Bob Francis Find of the Month - Relic: Heel Plate – Tim Myers…………. 1 vote Thimble – Jan Satterlee …………. 2 votes Lock – Jon Jasewicz ……………. 16 votes Topic of the Month: Field & Forrest Safety – Bob Francis From comments received after the presentation it went well. Remember: first aid, nutrition and water are your essentials! Build your own “go bag” for the type of hunting, weather conditions, terrain and duration of your hunting trip. Suggestions brought up last year on how we can improve the Annual Club Hunt and Picnic were vote on: These items were passed by majority vote: • Extra canopy for registration and/or displays – more space for eating • Rack – for metal detectors (get them off the tables) – it was suggested at this meeting that a rope or wire be strung between two support posts. • More pennies for warm-up hunt – from 200 to 300 suggested • Reduce the number of tokens for the two main hunts to eliminate weaker prizes – bring it down to 8 tokens per quadrant and bring up the token values slightly (Currently 80 are planted reduce to 64) • Increase tokens at warm-up penny hunt and give away the weaker prizes • People must use headphones – it is on the registration form • Strongly suggest attendees use machines other than pulse induction or eliminate the use of pulse induction machines many complains of interference this year – suggested at this meeting that we add the “strongly suggest” part it to the registration form – we will work on that These items were voted on and were not passed: • Mega phone or PA system so everyone can hear announcements • Limit size of coil to standard coil – it may also help reduce interference from large coil machines • Multi-frequency machines be set to one frequency to reduce interference • Increase the size of the fields so we are not walking all over each other, maybe decreasing machine interference • Make it one big hunt using all the main fields – that way attendees won’t be running over each other and may reduce the chance of detector “frequency” interference. • Idea presented to add copper tokens for the main hunts it would slow down the search if you have to look for more than just silver This item was shelved while a proto type could be developed or found: • Someone saw a coin planting tool – maybe make a prototype to test. It would help volunteers plant faster with less bending, it may also help make the coins a universal depth We are always open to new ideas and suggestions to make your metal detecting experience a good one. So if you have an idea tell us!
