2015 SUMMER & 2015-2016 Academic Year Volunteer Opportunities! The mission of Esperanza is to improve the academic achievement of Hispanics in Greater Cleveland by supporting students to graduate high school and promoting post-secondary educational attainment. Our programs offer experience, support, guidance, and skill-building to help a diverse community of children and adults find and reach their potential. KEY Steps To Volunteer: 1) Express Interest in Volunteering! 2) Attend Interview a. Provide necessary information for background checks b. Sign Media Release (Voluntary) 3) After a successful background check, you will complete the online volunteer application 4) Begin volunteering! ESP = Esperanza LW = Lincoln West LMM = Luis Muñoz Marín MH = Max Hayes JFR = James Ford Rhodes OS = Off-site Bilingual is a bonus! Program Months Day/s Times Location Time Commitment Volunteers will... Background Check Required by… Other requirements desired # Saturday Academy Oct - Dec & Mar - May Sa 9:00am 4:00pm ESP & OS 8 weeks (4-8 hours per day Present on college related topics, as well as chaperon campus visits. Esperanza Attend 50% of all workshops & campus visits. 6 3:00pm 6:00pm ESP 9 Months (1-2 hours/week) As needed, TUTOR 6th-12th grade students, based on individual requests. Esperanza Receive 80% on subject area test. Must be able to tutor Math, Science, English, Social Studies. 5 Tutoring Sept - May M - Th Mentoring (1-on-1) Ongoing flexible flexible ESP & OS 12 Months (4 hours/month) Support & encourage mentee with their academic & personal goals. Matches based on personal & career interests. Esperanza Ability to establish positve relationships with students 6th - 12th grade. 10 ELLA Mentoring Sept - Apr T 4:30pm 6:30pm ESP & OS 8 Months (4 hours/month) Attend bi-weekly meetings while being a positive role model for young females. Esperanza Ability to establish positve relationships with high school students. 10 ELLOS Mentoring Sept - Apr Th 4:30pm 6:30pm ESP & OS 8 Months (4 hours/month) Attend bi-weekly meetings while being a positive role model for young males. Esperanza Ability to establish positve relationships with high school students. 10 Middle School Mentoring Sept - Apr W 12:30pm 2:00pm LMM 8 Months (2 hours/month) Meet with middle-school youth once a month to present on educational topics. Weekly E-mentoring. CMSD & Esperanza Ability to establish positve relationships with middle school students. 10 Stay in School for College and Career Opportunities Sept - May M - Th 2:30pm 4:30pm LMM 9 Months (4 hours/week) Assist with daily activities, chaperoning field trips, & tutoring. CMSD & Esperanza Experience interacting with pre-teens (6th-8th graders) 4 Hispanic Youth Leadership Program Sept - May M - Th 2:00pm - JFR, MH, 4:30pm LW 9 Months (2-4 hours/week) Assist with program activities, and tutor 9th 12th grade students. CMSD & Esperanza OGT/ACT/SAT experience. Bilingual. Commit to Spring & Fall semester. 3 Back to School Give Away Aug 8th Sa 8:00am 2:30pm ESP 7 hours Assist with backpack set up, filling out forms, giving directions, set-up & tear-down. Esperanza Attend orientation (TBD). Committ to the full 7 hours. Must be able to stand for long period of time. 20 ESP & OS 8 Weeks (8 hours/day, 4 days a week) Assist with morning student check-in, compiling & completing STEAM related worksheets with students, & general facilitation of activities & field trips. Esperanza Ability to establish positve relationships with pre-teen. Knowledge of MS application, bilingual preferred, experience tutoring. 3 Esperanza Ability to establish positve relationships with high school students. 35 STEAM Camp June - July M - Th 8:00am 4:00pm Summer of Hope June - July M - Th 8:00am 4:00pm ESP & OS flexible ESP & OS Summer Mentoring Program June - July M - Th Assist with chaperoning field trips and 6 Weeks (8 hours/day, 3 community service trips, food service, and days a week) general facilitation of activities. Communicate weekly with a mentee via e6 Weeks (1 hours a mail. Attend 2-3 fun events to get together week) with your mentee & other mentors.
