Application deadline: March 27, 2015 The European Union Center of California, Pomona College, the University of Rijeka, and the University of Groningen are delighted to announce our Summer School on Transitional Justice and the Politics of Memory in the Mediterranean, which will be held on the island of Cres, Croatia from 22 June to 2 July 2015. This intensive 10-day summer school will explore the main theme of transitional justice alongside a number of comparative perspectives from elsewhere in the globe. The academic program features an international panel of experts as well as films, excursions, a special workshop on academic writing, publishing and grant proposal writing, and guest lectures from leading transitional justice practitioners. Themes covered include: Introduction to Transitional Justice, Criminal Justice and Accountability, Memory (Memorialization and Commemorative Practices), Oral Histories and Truth Commissions, and Lustration. Qualifications: The applicant must be a Scripps College, Pomona College, Pitzer College, Claremont McKenna College, or Harvey Mudd College student in good standing. Any advanced, highly motivated student with a demonstrated interest in transitional justice or human rights is encouraged to apply. Requirements: Upon return, the student will submit a short report on the program and may be asked to participate in the EU Center’s outreach programs, such as internship and summer school information sessions on campus. Compensation: The participant will be awarded a full stipend covering airfare, the cost of the program, and housing. CMC students will receive their stipends through the CMC Career Services office; therefore, they may have to later submit some additional documents to that office. Application Procedures: Submit application materials either electronically to eucenter@scrippscollege.edu, or by campus/postal mail to European Union Center, Scripps College, Box 2015, Claremont, CA 91711. Include: Summer School application form. A detailed cover letter (up to 2 pages) addressed to the European Union Center of California indicating: your background/experience/interest on European or EU issues; the qualifications that will enable you to have a successful experience; why you would like to attend this summer school; how the school will support your academic and career goals. A one-page resume or curriculum vitae. Two letters of reference, at least one from a faculty member. (Letterhead is preferred, but e-mail directly to eucenter@scrippscollege.edu is acceptable). An official transcript. (Please order well in advance, as registrars often take a few working days to process these). There is a two-step review process. First, faculty from the Claremont Colleges will nominate a select number of students. These students will then be interviewed on April 2 or 3. Applicants will be notified of final decisions by mid-April. For More Information: Please call or email Jennifer Cichocki at (909) 607-8103, eucenter@scrippscollege.edu or visit the EU Center at Steele Hall Room 222 at Scripps College.
