Everglades K-8 Center Fifth Grade Summer Activity List Incoming 2015-2016 Fifth Grade Students Reading/ Language Arts: Students are to read Artemis Fowl (A.R. Level 5.0) by Eoin Colfer (The first book in the series) and complete the attached reflection questions. The responses to the reflection questions are to be turned in to their Reading/Language Arts teacher during the second week of school. Assignments will be graded. Mathematics: Memorize Multiplication Tables 0-12. You may practice on www.multiplication.com Complete the attached math packet and turn it into their math teacher during the second week of school. Science : Select one activity to complete. Living in Miami, we have the advantage of living near several beaches. Beyond the beaches is where the animals of the ocean live. Humans have affected the ocean animals that live off our shores in several negative ways, such as pollution. Create a poster to educate other people who live in Miami about the human impact on marine life. Review the Scientific Method (copy attached). You may visit the Miami Science Museum and/ or Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden(Optional) Social Studies: Subject: Character Education Title of the activity – Random Acts of Kindness Description of the activity – Talk about the phrase, “Practice Random Acts of Kindness.” What does this phrase mean? Ask your child(ren) to give examples of random acts of kindness. Have them write about a time when someone was kind to them. Ask them to write a letter to this person thanking him/her for this kind act. Subject: Geography Title of the Activity: My Trip through Florida Description of the activity: Obtain a road map of Florida either from the Internet or a local gas station. Plan a trip through Florida stopping at interesting and entertaining locations such as Disney World, St. Augustine, and Tallahassee. Using your road map, draw the route you would take to complete your trip. Using the scale found on your road map and a ruler, calculate how many miles you would travel to complete your trip. Finally, research on the Internet some of the interesting historic and cultural activities you could do while visiting each place you selected to go visit.
