EVP May 2015 Newsletter - Escarpment View Public School
From the Administrators
Our five year birthday celebration was a huge success! On Wednesday, April 8 th,
we showcased Escarpment View’s diversity by creating a number of themed
pavilions that represented over 75 countries and cultures of the students and
staff of the school. Students displayed a wealth of talent through numerous
presentations and performances. In spite of the poor weather, throngs of families
came out to enjoy the festivities. A special thank you to all who helped make this
evening such a memorable one.
For our final recognition assemblies, students who performed at the birthday
celebration will be performing once again for the whole school body. (April 30 th –
Irish dancers, Gr. 3 singers, May 29th – Latin dancers, June 25th- Indian dancers).
In sports, Escarpment View has much to celebrate. The girls basketball team won
their division North Halton Tier 2 championship and were finalists in the All Halton
finals. The boys played hard and made the Tier 2 semi-finals. Both semifinals
were played at the Velodrome.
Each year, we look forward to Education Week in Ontario (May 4-8). This year’s
theme is, “Achieving Excellence: Moving Forward in Math”. Education week is a
time for celebration. It is a time to recognize the excellent work that has been
occurring here at Escarpment View in math, which is a board initiative. Staff and
students will be showcasing their work in many different ways within the school
and in their classrooms during this week.
The grade 3’s and 6’s will be writing the EQAO Ministry of Education assessment
from May 25th to June 5. This assessment is a tool to help us as a school set goals
for teaching and learning, as well as assists us in tracking our own growth and
accomplishments. It is important for the students to be at school for the duration
of the testing period. Please avoid making appointments or scheduling any
absences on these days to minimize disruptions to the assessment. More
information will be sent home to parents of the grades involved.
Each year a Student of Excellence is selected to represent Escarpment View at
the Board celebrations. This year Esha Mahmood was chosen by the staff to
represent our school. She excels in literacy, numeracy and citizenship and
exemplifies the values embedded in the philosophy of Escarpment View. She will
be honoured with other honorees on Thursday, May 7th, 2015.
Please take time to view our website for current and upcoming events at

May 4th—8th
This year’s theme is “achieving excellence: moving forward in Math”
Staff and students will be showcasing their work in many different
ways this week within the school and in their classrooms.
Annual Pull Tab Drive – Every Pull Tab Counts!!
Escarpment View will be collecting pull tabs for the 6th year in a row! Collecting pull tabs is
easy, fun and FREE! Simply pull the tabs off from fruit cups, cat food, pop or other beverages
and send them into the school with your child. These tabs are made of pure aluminum and
are donated by weight to raise money for people who need to buy wheelchairs that cannot
afford them. Many think the pull tabs are melted down to actually make the wheelchair but
that is not the case. The tabs are sold for their aluminum value, and we receive anywhere
from 50-90 cents/lb toward the purchase of new wheelchairs. Last year, our students and
teachers worked together to collect almost 300 pounds of pull tabs. Our best year every was
close to 500 and we would love to see that again! We will be collecting for the full month of
May and half of June. Classes will again be competing to bring in the MOST pull tabs by the
middle of June. So please ask your relatives, friends, and family members to collect pull tabs
for this great cause! It will help out your child’s class in the contest and ultimately those who
need a wheelchair. The winners of our contest will be announced in the final newsletter.
Watch for our pull tab display located in our glass show cases. If you have any questions
please feel free to ask Mrs. Cain. In the end we are all winners because we are participating
in a simple yet powerful cause to help others and the best thing is….it’s FREE!

The Spring Carnival is fast approaching! The Sub-Committee for the Carnival has been working really
hard to organize this event. Thank you to each of them for their work up to this point. The School Council continues to reach out to the generous businesses in our Milton community for donations, goods and
services. We have strong community right here at EVP, so if you are a parent that can offer goods for
our silent auction or a service, please contact Lee Macinnis at the email address above. Please also
email Lee if you can assist on the day of the event. We will need many volunteers to ensure that we run
a fun and safe carnival!
More information will come out soon to the families. Please mark May 30th from 11am-3pm on your
calendars. The funds raised from the Carnival will continue to support the School Improvement Plan for
Student Success.
