Our aim is to give all students the opportunity to fulfil their potential in Music, by producing first class teaching and experiences. The Music Departmental Team includes a Head of Department, 2nd in charge of the Department (TLR), two part-time practitioners, one member of staff who has pastoral responsibility in the College as well as teaching Music, a full-time Studio Technician, eight peripatetic tutors (employed by the College) and administration support. The department also welcomes PGCE students from University of Plymouth each year. Our extra-curricular programme is also greatly enhanced by staff from other Departments. A major strength of the Department is the cohesive way in which all staff members contribute to the work of the team. Accommodation and Resources The Department has purpose-built accommodation, opened in 2005. The three large teaching rooms are well equipped, each with piano, computer, projector, DVD drive, audio provision, percussion and keyboards (with headphones). There are five practice rooms, accommodating the peripatetic lessons and group work. Two further rooms house the departmental specialist ICT facilities. This is constantly being improved. We have nine machines, each with Logic, Cubase and Sibelius, as well as license to use the programmes on a laptop and on classroom PCs. There are a further seven desktop machines with Sibelius in teaching rooms. The College holds a license for Dance eJay and this is utilised in College ICT Suites for Years 8 and 9. The students are able to keep their instruments in a dedicated store. The state-of-the art Recording Studio is heavily used by students at both GCSE and Post-16 level. Due to demand ‘Studio 2’ has now been established, primarily for A2 Music Technology students. The equipment is managed by a full-time Music Technician. The department is also very near the new hall, able to seat 499 audience/performers, where some of our concerts are held. The majority of teaching is within the Departmental rooms on Green Close Site, wherever possible. . Results The progress and attainment of our students is very good. In Summer 2014 100% of Post-16 Music and Music Technology students achieved a Grade C or above and met (the large majority exceeded) their target grades. GCSE results have risen rapidly and in Summer 2014 97% of students achieved a Grade C or above. Curriculum All students in Key Stage 3 receive one hour of Music per week. In year 7 this is taught in tutor groups, whilst at years 8-9 we teach in mixed ability groups which are not whole tutor groups, organised with the Art and Drama departments. The curriculum is planned and constantly reviewed by the team and we are always looking for the best ways to enhance our work. There is a range of Performing, Composing and Listening tasks within our termly units. Key Stage 3 homework is set half-termly. At Key Stage 4 we offer GCSE (OCR) as well as BTEC First Certificate Level 1/Level 2 in Music (Pearson). Students receive three hours per week for each option subject. At Key Stage 5 we offer AS/A2 Music (Pearson), AS/A2 Music Technology (Pearson) and BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Music - Performing (Pearson). The BTEC courses were introduced for first teaching in September 2014 so are at an embryonic stage. Three staff have been trained as Internal Verifiers, with the Head of Department having been OSCA accredited. Extra-Curricular Programme The department provides a vibrant and wide-ranging Extra-Curricular programme that is supported by both class and peripatetic staff. Instrument lessons are co-ordinated at the College and serve the majority of our feeder primary schools as well. As such, the College employs its own team of dedicated and experienced professionals, teaching woodwind, string, brass, piano/keyboard, voice, guitar and percussion. Students participate in ensembles at College, local and regional levels. College ensembles have participated in the National Music for Youth Competition, with the Balalaika Ensemble and ‘Weekend Rescue’ (student band) reaching the National Schools Prom at the Royal Albert Hall. We work closely with feeder primaries, the College running a transition choir (‘SHOUT’) for Years 5 to 8. Our current provision includes: Senior Swing Band, Junior Band, Senior SING (choir), Junior SING, Guitar Group, Sax Group, Music Technology club and Theory Class. All members of the Departmental Team offer complementary skills helping to bring a full and rich experience for our students Additionally, the department presents an extensive concert and events programme throughout the year. A typical year includes: Autumn Concert (in conjunction with a Rotary Club) held at the College and attended by c.400, Community Carol Service (at our local Parish Church), four year-group carol services (in conjunction with pastoral staff), two peripatetic music concerts (an opportunity to hear students who learn instruments and to meet the teachers involved), performance at the Devon County Show, performances in the Exmouth Summer Festival, summer cabaret of performing arts (dance, drama, music at Exmouth Pavilion, in conjunction with Exmouth Rotary club), a concert of vocal music, a summer Swing Band evening, outside, weather permitting (usually with other local musicians from the community and/or local secondary schools), A2 music recitals and college production in conjunction with drama/dance. Recent musicals include Fame, Grease, Kiss Me Kate, Hair, Threepenny Opera, Cabaret, Bugsy Malone and Oliver. The following were also part of our programme for the current academic year: a workshop and concert with the Band of HM Royal Marines (CTCRM Lympstone), Senior SING attending workshop and performing in Exeter Cathedral as part of the Devon ‘Celebrating Singing Excellence’ event, SING supporting a professional operatic trio at a concert, a GCSE/Post-16 visit to the Royal Opera House, workshop and concert with an American Gospel Choir from Tennessee. We also run a recording experience and workshops with adults with learning difficulties during the College’s Activity Week. There are other events throughout the year, both in and outside of college, organised by community groups and students. In March 2011, the Music Department ran its first Tour to Paris, taking 60 students to perform in the French capital (singers and instrumentalists). This has been followed by equally successful tours to Valkenburg, Netherlands (March 2013) and Dublin (February 2015).
