Carpentry - Fort Hayes Metropolitan Education Center

School Information
Fort Hayes is two unique educational
programs. The Career Center component
offers half-day vocational courses in a
number of health/medical programs,
business computer information systems,
and the visual and performing arts – all to
prepare students at marketplace
proficiency. The Fort Hayes Arts and
Academic High School focuses on a
rigorous college preparatory program
and a rich immersion in the arts (music,
dance, theatre, and visual art). The
curriculum is delivered through yearlong
80-minute class periods. Advanced
placement courses are offered in English,
biology, calculus, government, history,
art studio, Spanish, and French.

Education Information
Carpentry graduates are prepared to
further their careers in the Carpenters
Union, Laborers Union or Union of
Operating Engineers. Students are also
equipped to enter shops with estimating
and concrete positions or to pursue a
future as a small business owner.

Carpentry
Certifications & Internships
Coursework
Graduates of the Carpentry program
will be certified in forklift, skid steer,
bobcat, high lift operation, ditch witch
trenching and power actuated nailing.
Students will also carry a 10-hour
OSHA card, First aid, CPR and AED
certifications.
At the Career Center Carpentry
program, we use The N.C.C.E.R.
National Center for Construction
Education and Research
curriculum. This curriculum is a
national certificate that stays with
the student their entire life. The
card they carry can be pulled upon
from a national system and
documents everything they did in
training. All students will receive
16 college credits at Columbus
State Community College for this
coursework.
Furthermore, students may choose to
enter into an apprenticeship program
where they will receive on the job
training and get paid for their time.
Job Opportunities
Post-Secondary Opportunities
Upon graduation from the carpentry
program, students have experience in
several areas of the Construction
Industry. Graduates work on projects
ranging from framing and finishing a
home, working on 50-story high rise
condo units, schools, churches, and
commercial buildings.
Students in the program will earn postsecondary credit. Graduates have the
choice of entering a two-year program at a
community college and obtaining an
Associate’s Degree in Construction
Management or going to a four-year
college/university and obtaining a
Bachelor’s Degree in Construction
Management or Engineering.
Program Requirements
Students who enter the Carpentry
program visit and apply during
their sophomore year. It is
required for students to have a
basic tool belt, tape measure,
hammer, multi driver and a good
work ethic. Attendance is key to
the opportunities that are
available.
Salary Ranges
In this field the more training and
schooling you obtain, the higher your
pay scale. However, a laborer can
expect a $28,000-$38,000 annual salary,
a carpenter can expect a $28,000$54,000 annual salary, a heavy
equipment operator a $35,00-$53,000
annual salary and a roofer can expect a
$25,000-$45,000 annual salary.
