birthdays were special with 6 brothers treating her like a princess. One of her favorite birthdays was her 5th when her brothers planned and prepared the whole birthday party for Joan and family and friends. They decorated the stair bannisters with streamers and made the cake and sandwiches for refreshments. One brother used his allowance to buy her a blue chiffon dress with rose decorations which she remembers to this day Broadway Palm Dinner Theater May 26th - Eunice Kehl enjoyed a birthday surprise party planned by her husband and Mother Nature. They were living in Johnstown PA and Mother Nature sent a snowstorm. Her sister said, “If I'd known it would snow, I wouldn't have come.” Her husband said he was taking her to dinner at a nearby restaurant and there were her friends and family gathered. Her children surprised her and hubby on their 25th wedding anniversary. Prior reservations were made for this show, your name can be added to a waiting list, if there should be any cancellations. May 28th - Donna Monson is originally from Erie PA where she grew up, graduated HS and went to work for the telephone co in Jamestown NY. She has a son from her first marriage. Her husband died while she was quite young. Along the way she married again, sadly losing those two husbands to death. She made a choice to enter missionary work when in her 50s and spent 4 years in Nepal – the capital Katmandu and also 180 miles further. She came to Lehigh Acres to be near two of her sisters. Donna moved to Fountain Crest and is an active game player and attends Fellowship hour. May 28th - Lori Ames is one of our newer intrepid dining room servers. Starting out in Rockland ME, she went on to Tenants Harbor and Thomaston before settling on Matinicus Island, 25 miles offshore from Rockland. Her occupation? Lobstering! In addition, she mowed lawns, managed rentals, did bookkeeping and, was town clerk on the Island and chairman of the school board. Florida, with family here, became the wintering destination 15 years ago when her son needed a high school to attend. Whew! She is some energizer bunny! “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” Date: May 6, 2015 Buffet Lunch: 11:45am Show Time: 1:15pm Bus leaves at: 11am Please see Debbie or Stephanie for more information. Sadly, Minnie fell and broke vertebrae in her back. After a year of recuperation at daughter Linda's home in Naples, they chose to return to independent living here at Fountain Crest. Her companion is Honey, a 5-1/2 month old teacup poodle. She says she's loved all her birthdays. Her parents and Ray and their 4 children always made a “big deal” of birthdays. May 9th - David Acuff was born in Cosport IN, grew up and joined the Navy from there. He served 27 months at the submarine base in Pearl Harbor. On the USS Cimarron, he touched down at Hong Kong, Japan and the Philippines. While working for a consumer finance co., he met & married Sandra. They have a son and daughter. He worked for the IRS in IN and farmed in KY. After the second tractor rollover, enough was enough and they came to Lehigh Acres. He again worked for the IRS and raised orchids for shows. They moved to Milton FL to be near their son. They remembered Fountain Crest and have come here to live near their daughter in North Fort Myers. May 15th - Paul Ryder especially remembers his 16th birthday as he had his father sign for him to join the Air Force. Another happy day was the day his wings were pinned. Boyhood heroes included “Lucky Lindy” Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart. He was in the 8th Air Force (Berlin air lift and MAST) as mechanic and flight engineer. He is delighted to have a grandson in the CAP (Civil Air Patrol) following in granddad's footsteps. The best that ever came his way, he confides, is Betty! May 17th - Al Horwitz has come to Fountain Crest via the Bronx NY and Brooklyn and other points east. He served in the Army (Fort Hood TX & Fort Eustis VA) and is a Korean War veteran. He earned his bachelor degree in finance from New York University. He was a merchandiser for Robert Hall Clothing, assistant to the VP of CATO, worked for Goldsmith Bros. in Nassau NY. He earned his nickname of “Al Horn” while involved in newspaper sales. He has a son and daughter. He and Johanna moved here from Palm Beach County. May 17th - Brian Snider, Fountain Crest maintenance, says his 50th birthday was a winner as he and friends and family (some from IN) celebrated with several days in Key West. Part of the celebration was charter fishing out of Key West. And, yes, he did snag an 8 foot bull shark with his first and last deep sea fishing gala. May 17th - Ursula Matteson remembers her 1945 birthday with the ending of WWII in Germany. Her birthday gifts from her grandmother were a toothbrush and house slippers – very difficult to obtain. An American Care package contained peanut butter which they were not familiar with. However, the birthday cake had peanut butter in it. Family and friends gathered for this event after walking from their homes as there were no streetcars. Another special memory is meeting Ray in 1948 while he was stationed with the American Army in Germany.
