FRANKLIN ELEMENTARY NEWS January & February 2015 For more news and for our most up to date events, check out our new and improved Franklin School Website at http://franklin.wawm.k12.wi.us and like us on Facebook too! Leslie Connors, Principal Tammy Mattern, Secretary Barb Kruk, Part-time Secretary Stepping It Up at Franklin Franklin Elementary School 2060 South 86th Street West Allis WI 53227 Telephone - 414-604-3700 Fax -414-546-5682 Welcome to Winter! I hope all families enjoyed their winter holiday and the “extra” time with the cold weather last week! We are thrilled all students are back and hope the weather and illness cooperates with us so all students are able to attend school each day, as we have a lot of work to do! Our K4 center is flourishing with activity. Our Winter Sing was a wonderful community event in which our students shared their musical talents with us. During the event students shared special holiday songs, students and parents created snowflakes that glittered and of course we ended the event with juice and cookies. It seemed that everyone enjoyed sharing their afternoon with our school. Our K5-1st grade students have been busy exploring different types of weather, learning about storms and they may become our next generation of “storm catchers” or “meteorologists”. All this learning engages our students in purposeful reading and writing tasks, as our goal is to create proficient readers. As parents, the most important way to support your child’s growth in reading and writing is to ask your child to read each night for 20 minutes. Not just read silently, but rather ask your child to read to you or with you and talk about the book. This conversation develops student’s thinking. Our 2-5 students have quite a feat ahead of them with our new standardized testing ~ SMARTER BALANCED- BADGER TESTING. This assessment is quite rigorous as we are asking our students to read from multiple texts, evaluate the credibility of these sources as well as understand the author’s purpose in writing to compose their own piece of writing! Third graders, fourth graders and fifth graders will all be required to cite the source in which they found the evidence to support their idea! It is amazing though, with persistence and perseverance, our students are beginning to understand this 21st century reading skill. Again, as parents, please ask your child to read each day at home, have a conversation about the book/chapter, and talk about the author’s craft. This 30 minute process will make all the difference. We will be hosting a parent information session about this new assessment in spring. Daily school attendance is crucial for success. Please make certain your child attends each day, is on time and stays for the whole day. If they are not in school, they cannot learn. I appreciate your support. Franklin is a wonderful school community; great kids, great parents and great teachers. As a Franklin team, we will be sharing our accomplishments with the Board of Education on January 26th. Come support our school and listen to all the wonderful things that our school provides with all your support. Mrs. Connors ATTENTION FRANKLIN PARENTS!!
