The Plot Against Jesus
Matthew tells us (in Chapter 26), about the events in the last week of Jesus’ life on Earth. Jesus and his
disciples were on the way to Jerusalem to celebrate the Jewish feast of Passover. (Last week we explained
that celebration to you.) At this time Jesus predicted (to his disciples) that after Passover, he would be
betrayed, handed over to the rulers, and killed, but he disciples couldn’t quite grasp what he was saying,
because that didn’t seem realistic to them. While Jesus was still in Bethany, a woman came to him with a jar
of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table. When the
disciples saw this, they were upset at what appeared to be her wastefulness. But Jesus said not to prevent
her from doing that loving act because she was preparing him for burial, though she didn’t know it. He also
said “I tell you, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told,
in memory of her.”
The disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the
Passover?” He replied, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The Teacher says: “My appointed
time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.’” So the disciples did as
Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover meal. After that, as Jesus was reclining at the table
with his 12 disciples he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.” They were very sad and began to
say to him one after the other, “Surely you don’t mean me, Lord?” Jesus replied, “The one who has dipped
his hand into the bowl with me will betray me” and by that he was referring to Judas. While they were
eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying,
“Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took a cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to
them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for
the forgiveness of sins.” (We repeat this ceremony in our churches today, and call it “Communion” or “the
Eucharist” or “the Lord’s Supper.”)
Then Jesus told the disciples, that all of them were going to desert him. Peter couldn’t believe that, but
Jesus said to him “you will deny me three time before the next time the rooster crows.” Then Jesus went
with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and
pray”, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. He said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to
the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me,” and he went a little farther. He fell with his face to
the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this assignment be taken from me. Yet not as I
desire, but may your will be done.” Then he returned to his disciples, but he was upset to find them
sleeping.
While Jesus was still speaking, Judas, returned with a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from
the chief priests and the elders of the people. They were upset because Jesus was drawing a lot of
attention by doing many miracles and by teaching with great understanding. Some of the religious leaders
were jealous, and some were confused by Jesus. When many people who followed Jesus began to
recognize that his power came from God in a unique way, they referred him him as the promised Messiah,
and he acknowledge what they believed was in deed true. Since the leaders did not (or were not willing ) to
believe that, they considered these claims to be blasphemy, and wanted to kill Jesus. Judas greeted Jesus
with a kiss, which was his signal to the crowd that this man was Jesus, whom they were searching for to kill.
They took Jesus away, and everything he had predicted to his disciples happened. They put him through a
the charade of a trial (the details are in the Bible), they mocked him, put a crown made of thorns on his
head, and mocked him, beat him horribly and then they crucified him on a cross.
This awful week in the life of Christ is remembered each year and we call it Holy Week. This is a sad
remembrance. And thankfully, this was NOT the end of the story. Next week, we will tell what happened
after the crucifixion.
