AMAZING GRACE UPDATES March 28/29, 2015
Grace Episcopal Church “Accepting…sharing…living in GRACE” Holy Eucharist is celebrated Morning, Noon and Night! SUNDAY MORNING at 10:30 am SATURDAY EVENING at 5:30 pm WEDNESDAY at Noon in the Chapel ALL ARE WELCOME! AMAZING GRACE UPDATES March 28/29, 2015 – PALM / PASSION TRANSITION UPDATE –March 28/29, 2015 from Senior Warden Linda Watt Dear friends of Grace: The vestry met last Tuesday to hear the recommendations of the Review Committee, which has been engaged in interviews and other background work regarding our rector candidates. The Committee and the Vestry agreed that we should continue to consider two candidates. We are very pleased that the Holy Spirit has blessed us with these two excellent priests who have put themselves forward for this position. The next step is to invite them (separately) to St. George to meet in person with the members of the Review Committee and the Vestry. Obviously, this process involves a decision on the part of the candidates as well as on the part of Grace. We want both candidates to see our area so that they can decide if they would enjoy living here in Southern Utah and serving at Grace. Likewise, we look forward to getting to know them in person to see which of them is the better fit for our congregation. These short visits will take place over the next several weeks. Several of you have asked if the candidates will meet with the congregation. Many of you may recall that this question was asked directly of Canon Mary June Nestler when she visited with us in January. She explained the confidential nature of the search process, a policy which the members of the Vestry and the Review Committee take very seriously, and which does not permit us to share the names of our candidates nor will they meet with others in the congregation beyond the Committee and the Vestry. It is likewise important to understand that the governance principles of the Episcopal Church confer the responsibility of selecting a rector on the Vestry, the members of which (with the exception of the Senior Warden who is appointed) are elected by the congregation to carry out the business of that congregation. Each of us on the vestry recognize the import of this decision and we are committed to use our best judgment, with prayer and deep reflection and love, to make the best decision we can on your behalf. On another note, I am sad to let you know that Holly Anderson will be moving to Michigan at the end of April and will be vacating her seat on the Vestry. Holly’s departure is a great loss to Grace. She was our Senior Warden for several years and is now leading the review process for our rector search. Her expertise, good humor, and attention to detail has helped immensely in this process. The vestry has asked Mary Ellen Van Wagoner to fill this vacancy, effective the beginning of May. She will serve until the next Annual Meeting in early 2016, and we are delighted that she has agreed. Thank you, Mary Ellen! Hoping to see you at all our upcoming services, I wish each of you a blessed and reverent Holy Week. With love, Linda Holy Week… …beginning with Palm/Passion Vigil on Saturday, March 28 and concluding with the Feast of the Resurrection on Sunday, April 5th, constitutes the most significant time of our liturgical year. News from Community Soup Kitchen with Grace… A big Thank You to Ray and Marie Kattler for their years of service to CSKwG! Ray and Marie began serving as team leaders two times a month when the Soup Kitchen was in the formation stage. Their menus were always delicious! How we appreciate the tireless work of these two, who are stepping down to a much deserved “retirement”! Jean and Betty Brown (435-272-1881) and Jacqi Rynbrandt (435-256-8833) have accepted the position of team leaders of the two Grace teams, each team serving on alternate months. If you would like to join other Grace members in this service, give these ladies a call. New team members are needed by Tuesday, April 7 when Jacqi’s team is next scheduled to serve. Liturgical Dance – The Music Ministry at Grace would like to develop a Liturgical Dance Team. Open to all men, women and teens. Previous dance training is not a requirement. If you are interested in learning the art, inspiration, and fun of liturgical dance, please contact Mary Lloyd Barth at 435-275-2855 or marybarth1@gmail.com MINDFULNESS Training classes will be held in the Pax et Bonum Chapel at Grace on Wednesday evenings from 6:00-7:00 p.m., beginning on April 15, 2015. The classes will be led by Dr. David Tate PhD, a psychologist in private practice in St. George. There is no fee for the classes; however, participants are invited to make a donation of food or money, 100% of which will go to support the Community Soup Kitchen and Utah Food Bank. Flyers with information on the class and instructor are available on the counter at the back of the church. The classes cover: The quality of our moment-to-moment attention informs every aspect of our lives and the degree to which we are able to live life fully. Mindfulness is the deliberate practice of paying attention wholeheartedly to all of our experiences, which results in greater mental, emotional and physical health; inner freedom, balance, peace and joy. Each weekly class is self-contained and will include training in a variety of mindfulness meditation practices and explore practical applications of mindfulness in everyday life.
