Successful Starts Strategies for Effective Teaching and Research In Undergraduate STEM Programs Collaborative for Learning and Teaching Trinity University June 10-12, 2015 Sponsored by San Antonio Biomedical Education and Research (SABER), an IRACDA* program at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, St. Mary’s University and Our Lady of the Lake University Overview: This interactive 3-day workshop will provide a select group of postdoctoral scholars with a strong foundation in STEM instruction and research at predominantly undergraduate institutions. A primary goal of this program is to prepare early career scientists from traditionally under-represented populations for entry into professional life as teacher-scholars and to facilitate their success and well-being as members of a faculty community. This will be accomplished through a combination of mini-presentations, guided activities, panel discussions, and participant networking. All postdoctoral fellows are encouraged to apply. Advance preparation will be required for activities on Days 1-2. Workshop facilitators, Dr. Sean Connin (Director, Collaborative for Learning and Teaching) and Dr. James Roberts (Professor of Biology) are scientists at Trinity University with extensive experience in innovative STEM instruction, undergraduate research, and faculty development. Dr. Timothy Raabe, Professor and Chair of Biology at St Mary’s University and Dr. James Hall, Professor of Biology at Our Lady of the Lake University, will also be active participants in this learning and teaching workshop Workshop Prospectus: Wednesday, June 10: The Undergraduate Learning Environment Thursday, June 11: Effective Teaching Practices Friday, June 12: Engaging Undergraduates in Research *Institutional Research and Academic Career Development Awards Capacity is limited, interested participants must register by June 1st at: http://tinyurl.com/nn95t4h For an agenda or additional questions, please e-mail us at: iracda@uthscsa.edu
