Thank you to those parents, grandparents and others who were able to come to be with their children to help enjoy the activities and be involved with the classes. Year 1 students had lots of fun with their photo booth! Mrs Dobson and the students prepared a wonderful morning tea and lovely readings for those present. Then, adults joined their children in a sporting activity. Again, thank you to all those who attended and for teachers and staff for making the events a huge success. SCHOOL ENROLMENTS FOR 2016 If you would like to apply to enrol your child/ren for Kindergarten, Pre-primary or Primary (years 1 to 6) for the 2016 school year please come to the front office of Hawker Park Primary School to collect an Application Form. Parents: Please make sure that you have applied to enrol your child as soon as you can. The cut off date for applications is 31 JULY 2015. Submitting your application before the cut off date will allow us to commence planning of classes for the coming year. Children currently enrolled in Kindergarten at Hawker Park Primary School need to re-enrol if wishing to continue in Pre-primary at the school in 2016. If you have a neighbour or friend whose child will be turning 4 before 30 June 2016, please remind them they will need to complete an application form to ensure their child can secure a place in Kindergarten in 2016. Kindergarten - must turn 4 by June 30th, 2016 Pre-primary - must turn 5 by June 30th, 2016 At the time of enrolment you must produce a photocopy of your child/children’s birth certificate, ACIR Immunisation Statement and proof of current residence (utility account). Early Childhood Open Day We are having an Early Childhood School Open Day this year on Wednesday 17 June 2015, from 9.30am until 10.30am. Free Parent Literacy Workshop 2015 Presented by Denise Ansingh As many of you already know our Librarian, Claire Atkinson is retiring. Claire has been at the school for fifteen years. On behalf of our staff, students and school community, we thank Claire for all her contributions over the years and wish her well in her future endeavours. We hope Claire will visit the school from time to time to say hello to the many friends she has here. Thank you to Mrs Joyce Keevil (one of our current staff members) who has taken on the role of Librarian on Mondays. I am certain that all the students will enjoy visiting Mrs Keevil in the library during their weekly classes. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed and helped to make the first week a great success. Last week we raised $147.45! The year 6 students will be selling cupcakes outside the senior wet area at recess every Wednesday during term 2. Cup cakes will be sold for $1 (small) and $2 (large). All funds raised will go towards the year 6 camp. Thank you to the great helpers! Workshop 1: Tuesday 19 May Reading Readiness Skills Workshop 2: Tuesday 2 June How Children Learn to Read 7.00pm-8.30pm in the school staffroom You may attend one or both of these workshops. To assist with planning and catering, please contact Denise in EC2 on 9448 5478 to book your place by Friday 15 May 2015. Learning to read, just like learning to talk, is a complex process which involves developing many skills. These workshops will highlight the reading readiness skills which provide the foundation for learning to read: beginning with the importance of oral language and then understanding the way print works. You can help your child at home by developing important visual and auditory skills and phonological awareness. CHAPLAI N’S Well, term 2 has taken off and it is a busy term! I want to congratulate Vayda (Preprimary), Sophie (Year 1), Aine (Year 3) and Darcie (Year 4) on receiving the Chaplains O Award for term 1. These four students consistently demonstrate the values of Respect, R Kindness and Manners within our school. N This term the value we are focusing on is Responsibility. Being responsible with the school E equipment, remembering to do homework and bring it to school the next day and doing the things that you have said you would do. R Being responsible means: R others can depend on you and that you do something to the best of your ability. when you make a mistake you take responsibility for it; you don't blame others. you are growing up. As we teach this at school it would be wonderful if you could talk with your children about being responsible as this will also help the children to focus on this value. Remember I am your Chaplain; if you need some support please do not hesitate to call me. Helen In-term Swimming Today a letter regarding In-term Swimming for weeks 9 and 10 was issued to all students from Pre-primary to Year 6. Swimming is a very important skill that all students should learn. It may save their own life or even allow them to save someone else’s one day. It is part of our curriculum and as such ALL students are required to attend unless for medical reasons. At $6.20 a lesson it is good value. We are conscious that these lessons this year are in winter, however coming at the end of the term and with all the other events in the school calendar there are some advantages. Each year we place three preferences for when we would like our lessons and they are then allocated by the Department based on all schools’ requests. In the past we have had lessons in terms 2, 3 and 4. When requests are made for 2016 later this year we will discuss them at a P&C meeting. Outdoor Classroom Thank you to our hard working gardeners Mr Tustanowski and Mr Covich who have organised the completion of the Outdoor Classroom. Reticulation has been installed and the grass is now laid. From term 3 this area will be available for our students to enjoy! Uniform Shop News Winter is on its way and the uniform shop is prepared. Winter jackets are available in: Zip Fleece Jacket sizes 4-8 for $33 and Rain Jacket sizes 6-16 for $45 Both are warm and look great. These can be purchased at the uniform shop on Mondays between 8.00am—8.30am and Fridays between 2.30pm—3.00pm or ordered by leaving correct change with an order form in an envelope at the front office (the item and receipt will be delivered to the child's room). Order forms can be downloaded from the school website or collected at the front office. Caroline Centa (0420 910 230) Walk Safely to School Day Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an annual, national event when all Primary School children will be encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. It is a Community Event seeking to promote Road Safety, Health, Public Transport and the Environment. It will be held throughout Australia on Friday 22 May 2015 The objectives of WSTSD are: To encourage parents and carers to walk to school with primary school age children and reinforce safe pedestrian behaviour. To promote the health benefits of walking and help create regular walking habits at an early age. To ensure that children up to 10 years old hold an adult's hand when crossing the road. To help children develop the vital road-crossing skills they will need as they become mature pedestrians. To reduce the car dependency habits that are being created at an early age and which will be difficult to change as children become adults. To promote the use of Public Transport. To reduce the level of air pollution created by motor vehicles. To reduce the level of traffic congestion. WINTER INTERSCHOOL SPORTS Last week we played Dalmain for the first time in Interschool competition. The results are: Soccer 6-2 (HPPS won) - good job to all participants. Good sportsmanship was shown. Football 24-41 (Dalmain won) - great job, better luck next time. Netball A 4-22 (Dalmain won) - better luck next time. Netball B lost courageously, better luck next time. This Friday we will be competing against Marangaroo Primary School at home. Football and soccer will be played at Hawker oval and netball will be played at the schools courts. Thanks Nerine Horabin P&C President P & C N E W S School Banking Day Reminder Don’t forget that Wednesday is our School Banking day in the library before school between 8.00am-8.30am. Students should bring in their weekly deposit. (There is no minimum deposit!) For every deposit made at school, no matter how big or small, students will receive a Dollarmites token. Once students have individually collected 10 tokens they can redeem them for an exclusive School Banking reward item in recognition of their continued savings behaviour. Remember our school earns 5% commission on every deposit made (to a maximum of $10 per individual deposit). Thank you for supporting the School Banking program at Hawker Park Primary School. We have had a wonderful response to the program so far with almost 50% of the school involved, which is truly amazing! We have a talented mum at the school who is a dog groomer. She lives in Warwick and is happy to accept new clients. So if you are in need of a dog groomer then please don’t hesitate to phone Nova on 0409 994 188. Cost is $50 for small dogs and $60 for medium dogs. The Entertainment Books will be available from the front office from Friday 15 May 2015. Price is only $65.00 and $13 from each book sold will go back to Hawker Park P&C.
