SchoolKidz School Supply Kits for 2015-16 For several years now, Haynes has partnered with SchoolKidz to offer families one-stop shopping for school supplies. Through this program, the teachers for each grade coordinate the supply list for their students. We then work with the SchoolKidz program to create a back-to-school kit tailored for each grade. Purchased kits will be delivered to your child's classroom ready for the first day of school next fall! The online ordering portal is now open and the last day to place your order is May 8th. This program will save you time and help make "back-to-school" less hectic and more enjoyable for both students and parents. School kits can be ordered ONLINE only. Each session lasts 6 weeks and meets 2 days per week for 45 minutes. Some of the activities include running, jumping, hopping, hula-hooping, learning new skills and so much more! BOKS will run every Monday and Wednesday morning OUTSIDE on the back playground from 8-8:45 a.m. The 6 week spring session starts on May 4th. Complete one Registration Form for each child and submit with a check for $25 (per child) made out to Haynes Organization of Parents (HOP) by Wednesday, April 29th. Scholarships are available. Parents will be responsible for transporting their children to school. Children who attend SED are eligible to enroll and participate. Please note, that sessions may be cancelled due to inclement weather. We will try our best to give as much notice of cancellation as possible. This will be done via email. ACE Awards for Teacher Appreciation Week Teacher Appreciation Week is May 4th-8th and what better way to show your outstanding educator that you appreciate all of the work she/he does for your student than with an ACE (Appreciation of Champions in Education) Award. When you make a donation to SERF (Sudbury Education Resource Fund) in honor of a teacher, specialist, tutor or administrator, the honored educator receives an ACE Award Certificate indicating that a donation has been made to SERF in his or her name as a "Champion in Education." The school principal also receives notice of the award, so that the honoree can be recognized among the school's faculty and staff. Your donation improves the classroom experience by enabling SERF to fund grant requests made by Sudbury educators (K-12) for innovative projects, technology and materials. Order your tax-deductible ACE Awards online at the SERF website. Deadline for Teacher Appreciation Week ACE Award requests is Monday, May 4th. Your donation will benefit teachers and students by funding SERF grants requested by our educators. In the 2014-15 school year, SERF has provided over $26,000 in grant money to the Sudbury Public Schools. Visit the SERF website to learn more about the grants funded this year at Haynes! 1st Grade Japan Festival: May 20th - Volunteer Opportunities Available Kon'nichiwa First Grade Families! Deborah Comer (Grace's mom) Jenn Stone (Abby's mom) Magnetic Circus Comes to Fourth Grade On April 7th, Let's Build ran a Magnetic Circus design challenge for the fourth grade. The students were presented with a design challenge: to build a circus act that moves using magnetic force. Working in groups, the kids learned to apply the concepts they had studied during their Electricity and Magnetism curriculum unit. Ask the students about the circus acts they designed and the cool names they came up with! The New England Aquarium Visits the 1st Grade An educator from the New England Aquarium came to talk to the 1st graders about tide pools, how they are formed, and the animals that live there. The students were allowed to touch and hold live snails, hermit crabs, clams, mussels, scallops, oysters, sea stars and even a horseshoe crab! They learned about how the animals' body parts and behavior allow them to live in such a unique environment. Ask your child where the snail gets its shell. How about the hermit crab? Ask them why a mussel attaches itself to rocks and other mussels. Find out how a sea star eats his dinner! Where Does the HOP Money Go? The Haynes community unanimously approved the Spring Wish List of items totaling over $12,000! These HOP funds came straight from YOU from fundraisers such as the Auction, Bingo Night, Square One Art, and many other amazing community fundraisers that help support Haynes. So THANK YOU and please know that the money you spend at these fundraisers goes back to the school and our children for all of the festivals, the cultural arts programs throughout the year, the amazing science enrichment programs that we bring in for each grade, and the other wish list items! So thank you again for your amazing support of our school!
