It consisted of small tunnels collecting to an arched opening in the basement. The heat from the furnace (praefurnham) in the basement (bypocausis) passed through the arch into these tunnels and thus heated the rooms above. The hot air was then drawn up into the “flues” set into the walls and finally through the “vents” in the roof. It was these flues that provided the “through draft” that made the system work. It was known as “Hypocaust heating” infloor heating TODAY Times have moved on, technology has advanced, and both hydronic and electric infloor heating is now extensively used and recommended. Subfloor Preparation Install an electrical box with a 15A power feed at desired thermostat location. Install a conduit from the electrical box to the floor to facilitate the heatmat cold connection cable. Ensure that the floor is clean, free of sharp edges and structurally stable. Install CosyBoard for higher efficiency and faster heat-up times. 3. Layout Drawing 4. Resistance Test 5. Heatmat Installation Decide the best layout for the heatmat and sketch on the layout drawing template in the installation guide. Prior to installation of the heatmat, perform a resistance test. Roll out the heatmat as outlined in the layout drawing created earlier, cutting the heatmat mesh where needed for return runs. 7. Resistance Test 8. Floor Finish 9. Resistance Test 10. Electrical Connections During installation of the heatmat, perform a resistance test. Install floor covering. The yellow heating cables should always be encapsulated in thinset cement or a self-leveling compound. (after installation) After installation of the heatmat, perform a resistance test.
