PhD-Programme “Auditory Sciences: Physics and Engineering, Physiology and Therapy of Hearing” 1.2 Audiology and Physics of Hearing Description: The course is intended for graduate students and postdoctoral investigators, students of medicine, physics and bioengineering. It aims to introduce the topic of clinical audiological methods to an interdisciplinary audience including engineers, neurologists/neurosurgeons and ENT specialists and psychologists. In that course the following topics will be covered: 1. The physiological basis of hearing I a. Physics i. Speed of sound ii. Acoustic impedance and reflection iii. Spatial hearing iv. Middle ear 2. The physiological basis of hearing II a. The basilar membrane and cochlear micromechanics i. Outer hair cells ii. Recruitment iii. The efferent system 3. Subjective tests a. Pure tone audiometry i. Adults ii. Children b. Speech testing in audiometry 4. Objective tests in audiometry a. Tympanometry b. Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE, TEOAE, DPOAE) c. Auditory Brainstem Responses (ABR) d. Cortical Evoked Response Audiometry (CERA) 5. Hearing screening 6. Hearing aids 7. Cochlea implants a. Electric stimulation of the cochlea b. Optical stimulation of the cochlea c. Electro-Acoustic Stimulation (EAS) 8. New applications in hearing aids a. Contra Lateral Routing of Signals (CROS) b. Bone Anchored Hearing Aids (BAHA) c. Implantable hearing aids i.
