March 2015 Press release: Cabin filters Cabin filters: The best way to beat pollen dirt and other impurities Experts are unanimous: Clean, conditioned air inside the vehicle acts against the threat of fatigue, meaning the driver can stay concentrated and alert, thus making driving safer. Allergy suffers are no longer at risk, as they are protected against pollen and other allergens, at least in the vehicle. However, regular replacement of the cabin filter is crucial for effective operation. This is because cabin filters prevent harmful particles down to 3μm (0.003 mm) or allergenic pollen from finding their way into the vehicle. In conjunction with air-conditioning, filtration also helps to keep vehicle occupants alert. Experts estimate that almost one in five Germans suffer from hay fever – and the number of those affected is continuing to rise. High concentrations of pollen can accumulate in vehicles in particular, as can dust, soot and exhaust gases. This can lead to acute problems for allergy sufferers and asthmatics, and may even have a negative effect on their ability to concentrate. As a development partner and series supplier, Hengst manufactures filters in original equipment quality corresponding to the high specifications and requirements of automobile manufacturers. High-quality materials and the familiar excellent machining qualities ensure effective functional operation. The extensive portfolio includes particle filters that absorb pollen, dust and soot, as well as activated carbon filters that also keep unpleasant odors at bay. Both types of filter have demonstrated their ability to achieve efficiencies of around 100 percent. The vehicle manufacturers usually specify a replacement anyway after 12,000 to 15,000 kilometers, but no later than one year. We recommend replacing the filter twice a year if the vehicle is used intensively: In the spring, as a great deal of impurities have accumulated over the winter, and in the autumn so as to remove pollen and dead leaves. The potential that workshops can tap into in addition to the existing service orders is therefore easy to extrapolate. And to make it easier for vehicle technicians to install brands they are unfamiliar with as well, Hengst provides easy-to-follow installation instructions for all filter types in its online cataloge at www.hengst-catalog.com, just as in every product package. Practical experience: Good reasons to replace the cabin filter regularly › Replace the filter at least once a year or, if you drive a lot, twice a year. › Only in this way can you guarantee an effective filtration of fine dust, pollen etc. from the air. The air quality inside the vehicle has a major effect on the concentration and health of the occupants. › A regular filter replacement protects the motor of the fresh air fan, as the air stream can flow freely. › Unfiltered or poorly filtered air can leave behind an unsightly film of dirt on the inside of the windshield. › Minimized exposure to odors Hengst provides easy-to-follow installation instructions for all filter types in its online cataloge at www.hengst-catalog.com, just as in every product package. The activated carbon filter (right) also consists of an activated carbon granulate, held together by an upper and lower non-woven layer. Besides the particles, harmful gases such as nitrogen oxides, methane and ozone are bound in the activated carbon.
