Houston Museum of Natural Science Summer 2015 Internship Opportunity Xplorations Resource Coordinator Salary: $9.50 per hour Hours: 35 hours per week (Monday-Friday 7:45am-3:15pm) Dates: May 26, 2015-August 21, 2015 The Houston Museum of Natural Science is offering a summer internship in the Youth Education Department. The Xplorations Resource Coordinator will work with Youth Education staff as part of the museum’s Xplorations Summer Camp. The Intern will be responsible for coordinating and organizing the educational materials used for the Xplorations Summer Camp classes which serve over 500 children each week during the summer. The Intern will also have the opportunity to learn about and get involved in other aspects of the Youth Education Department’s summer programming. The Intern must be able to meet required deadlines. This work may involve some moderate lifting. The Intern will also be asked to drive to nearby stores to acquire supplies using Museum purchase orders and corporate cards. The Intern will be supervised and mentored by the Curator of Education Collections. The goal of the Houston Museum of Natural Science is to provide an internship with a challenging project that allows him/her to develop professional skills while working with trained museum educators, interacting with professional Museum staff, and contributing to the mission of the Youth Education Department as well as the Museum as a whole. The Intern will also have the opportunity to learn about the importance of non-profit service in a Museum environment. Responsibilities Include: -Regular meetings with supervisor to discuss challenges as well as current and future projects -Support the Xplorations Summer Camp staff including active participation in staff meetings -Familiarity with the Education Collection held by the HMNS Youth Education Department -Coordinate the purchase, organization, and distribution of camp materials -Work with supervisor to maintain an organized system of purchases and supplies to ensure an accurate materials budget can be compiled easily at the end of the summer -Participate in research related to ongoing project of cataloging the Education collection -Assist in the planning, organizing, and implementation of additional education programs, such as the museum’s Overnight program, as necessary Job Requirements: -Must be a full-time undergraduate student as of Spring 2015 returning as a full-time student in Fall 2015 -Interest in working in a museum and educational environment -Interest in education, especially programs for children -Interest in customer service and interaction with Museum patrons -Must have access to reliable vehicle for use during work hours -Must be comfortable lifting large items, approximately 40 pounds -Intern must be at least somewhat familiar with Houston Museum District area -Must be organized, detail-oriented, reliable and ready to ask questions -Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and take initiative Eligibility Restrictions: Family members of current or former employees or board members of the Houston Museum of Natural Science are ineligible for this internship.
