We have a set form, but the content changes for each service. The content is governed by the church year calendar and lectionary (a system of scripture readings). Sunday worship is organized around the proclamation of the Word of God and the celebration of the Lord’s Supper. Lutheran worship books are organized so that page numbers for the liturgy are in the front part of the book, hymn numbers are in the second part. The liturgy and hymns are printed in your bulletin, but page numbers are provided for those wishing to follow along in the red Evangelical Lutheran Worship. Receiving Holy Communion We invite all baptized Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own churches to share with us the sacrament of the body and blood of Christ for the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation. At the direction of the usher, come forward to the altar. Receive the bread in the palm of your hand. Take the silver chalice and drink from it or dip the bread in the ceramic chalice. Return to your place via the side aisles after you receive both elements. Those who need to receive communion sitting should sit on an aisle and notify the pastor or an usher before the Service if you have not previously received communion in the pew. Those who desire a blessing but not the sacrament are asked to fold their arms over their chests. Page | 2 INFORMATION ABOUT TODAY’S SERVICE The Feast of Weeks was the second of the great pilgrimage festivals. Originally a harvest festival, it gained the Greek title Pentecost (meaning 50th day) because it came 50 days after Passover. In Luke’s day, Pentecost was viewed as a celebration of giving the Law on Sinai. Sometimes we Christians wind up a little too….sober! No, not concerning alcohol. We become too sober—as in serious, routine, predictable, and logical—for the spontaneity, creativity, and flexibility required for hearing, seeing, and understanding what God is doing in our midst! Soberly, we want everything to make sense, in orderly and sequential way. Then comes the windstorm; or a creation “groaning in labor pains.” Worse yet: hardships, beatings, riots, and sleepless nights. Desiring a more linear chain of events, we find ourselves in the “right brain” land of the seemingly irrational. When the Holy Spirit blows like a wind into our lives and through our moment in history, things are not left tidy and calm. In awe, we wonder where the wind “comes from and where it goes” (John 3:8). Peculiar things await us on this biblical excursion. So pack some childlike trust, and get a little crazy. This weekend we remember all those who have served in our country’s armed forces to preserve the freedoms that have been granted us. We also remember the family members who have made great sacrifices in order to make it possible for their service members to be on watch at home or around the world or to go into harm’s way. Service of the Word Gathering Pre-Service Music: Variations on: Come Holy Ghost, God and Lord by Bach et al Stand. Confessions and Forgiveness P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, who calls us beloved children, who gathers us into one flock, who guides us into all truth. C: Amen. P: Let us confess our sins, trusting that God will forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Silence for personal reflection P: Faithful and just God, C: we confess that we are captive to doubt and fear, bound by the ways that lead to death. We have not loved our sisters and brothers as you have first loved us. Forgive us, God of mercy. Let your Holy Spirit work in us to change our lives and make us new, that we may know the abundant life given in Jesus Christ, our risen Lord. Amen. P: In this is love, not that we loved God but that God loved us and sent the Son to atone for our sins. In the name of + Jesus Christ, I announce to you that your sins are forgiven. Let the perfect love of God cast out fear, fill you with joy, and inspire you to live for others. C: Amen. Mighty God, you breathe life into our bones, and your Spirit brings truth to the world. Send us this Spirit, transform us by your truth, and give us language to proclaim your gospel, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen Sit. Welcome to visitors and announcements First Reading: Acts 2:1–21 A: A reading from Acts: When the day of Pentecost had come, the apostles were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Congregation: Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit. and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. A: Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, Women: Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? Men: How is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Women: Parthians! Men: Medes! Right Side: Elamites! Left Side: Residents of Mesopotamia! Women: Judea! Men: Cappadocia! Left Side: Pontus and Asia! Right Side: Phrygia and Pamphylia! Men: Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene! Women: Visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes! Cretans and Arabs! All: In our own languages we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power! A: All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?" Men: But others sneered and said, Women: They are filled with new wine! A: But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, Men: Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: Women: In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, All: And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Women: Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. Men: And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. Page | 6 All: The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord's great and glorious day. A: Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved! A The word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Psalmody: Psalm 104 – Sung antiphonally by whole verses right and left sides ELW Psalm Double Tone 14, Page 338 24 How manifold are your | works, O LORD! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full | of your creatures. 25 Yonder is the sea, great and wide, with its swarms too man- | y to number, living things both | small and great. 26 There go the ships | to and fro, and Leviathan, which you made for the | sport of it. 27 All of them | look to you to give them their food | in due season. 28 You give it to them; they | gather it; you open your hand, and they are filled | with good things. 29 When you hide your face, | they are terrified; when you take away their breath, they die and return | to their dust. 30 You send forth your Spirit, and they | are created; and so you renew the face | of the earth. 31 May the glory of the LORD en- | dure forever; O LORD, rejoice in | all your works. 32 You look at the earth | and it trembles; you touch the mountains | and they smoke. 33 I will sing to the LORD as long | as I live; I will praise my God while I | have my being. 34 May these words of | mine please God. I will rejoice | in the LORD. 35b Bless the LORD, | O my soul. Hal- | lelujah! The Gloria Patri is sung by all. Glory to the Father, and | to the Son,* and to the | Holy Spirit; as it was in | the beginning,* is now, and will be forev- | er. Amen Page | 7 Second Lesson: Romans 8: 22 - 27 A A reading from the book of Romans 22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; 23and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. 24For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? 25But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. 26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. 27And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. A The word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Stand. Gospel Acclamation Holy Gospel: John 15: 26 – 27; 16: 4b - 15 P The Holy Gospel according to Saint John, the fifteenth and sixteenth chapter C Glory to You, O Lord 26 When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. 27You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning. 4b "I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. 5But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' 6But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. 7Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9about sin, because they do not believe in me; 10about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; 11about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned. 12 I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. P The Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ. Page | 8 Sermon Pastor Olson Silent reflection. Stand. Hymn of the Day: Spirit of Gentleness……………………………………………………….ELW Hymn 396 vs 1-2: cantor vs 3: choir vs 4: congregation Page | 9 Nicene Creed………………………………………………………………………………………...ELW Page 85 We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen we believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; Through Him all things were made. for us and for our salvation He came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate: he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures: he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. Who with the Father and Son is glorified, Who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church, We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins, We look for the resurrection of the dead, And the life of the world to come. Amen Prayers of Intercession and Thanksgiving for Volunteers P. We are truly blessed by God and enriched in our fellowship by the many people of this congregation who volunteer their time and their talent in small and large ways for the benefit of this church and for the advancement of the gospel of Christ in this place. St. Paul tells us that there are varieties of gifts and varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone as a manifestation of the Holy Spirit for the common good. There is no insignificant work that is done among us. All efforts -- from maintaining our property to cleaning the church to leadership to visiting the sick to praying for one another and for our ministryall are important efforts by which we are mutually blessed and by which our ministry prospers. At the same time, St. Paul teaches us to give thanks always to God through Christ in whom he has given us every blessing, including the blessing of one another. It is therefore appropriate on this day that we should recognize the work that is done by so many faithful and dedicated people, giving thanks to one another and to Almighty God for making the Spirit manifest among us in such a variety of ways. A: Let us pray. Almighty God, you have called us into fellowship as the Church of Jesus Christ in this place, and you have blessed us and enriched our lives through your Holy Word and Sacraments. You strengthen us and inspire us with your Holy Spirit to live lives of mutual love and service in the world. For all this, and, above all, for the gift of your Son and our salvation, we give our heartfelt thanks and praise. C: We give you thanks, O Lord. A: For those who lead and those who follow; for officers and councils and committees and boards: C: We give you thanks, O Lord. A: For ushers and greeters, for assisting ministers and readers, for acolytes and servers, for musicians and choirs: C: We give you thanks, O Lord. A: For prophets and seers, for teachers and preachers, for those who visit and for those who call: C: We give you thanks, O Lord. Page | 10 A: For cleaners and dusters, for maintainers and fixers, for those who cook and those who eat: C: We give you thanks, O Lord. A: For administrators and helpers, for counters and record keepers, for office work helpers: C: We give you thanks, O Lord. A: For those who give and those who pray, for those who plan and those who guide; for those with wisdom and those with inspiration: C: We give you thanks, O Lord. A: For youth workers and youth, for parents and grandparents, for loving sisters and brothers in Christ: C: We give you thanks, O Lord. A: For our past and for our future, for the many ways that we embody Christ for the needy in the world, for mission and ministry and for a purpose for being the Church: C: We give you thanks, O Lord. A: Keep us ever close to your Word and Holy Sacraments that we might find strength to endure to the end: C: We dedicate our lives to your service. A. Bind us to your love, and through that love, to one another, for the sake of the gospel: C: We dedicate our lives to your service. A: Make us cheerful givers and faithful workers for the kingdom of your Son: C: We dedicate our lives to your service. A: Make us one in the body of Christ that we may acknowledge with gratefulness the importance of all our members and all our gifts for the mission that you give us. C: We dedicate our lives to your service. A: Lift up the weak among us. Heal the sick. Relieve the distressed. Comfort the mourning. Especially we pray for Lynn Carson, Calvin Hummel, Yolanda Imhoff and her family, Ron Laudert, Indra Pandit, Carol Rakowsky, George Shiff, Doris Strom, Myrtle Wangerin, Barbara Ziegler (others), and for all those we name in our hearts before you. Be our strong rock and a refuge to keep us safe. C: Hear our prayer, O Lord. A: Bless all those who graduate this spring. In all ways show your favor in their lives that they may live in virtue and faith and enrich the world by your calling. C: Hear our prayer, O Lord. A: Gracious accompanying God, the One in whom we live and move and have our being, give us a vision of the times of our lives, the new situations in which we live out our faith in Jesus. May we ask anew what it means to be the Church in our time, our place. And as we work to call a new pastor to our congregation, may we welcome according to your Spirit the one you are sending to us to lead us into the new days ahead, Lord, in your mercy. C: Hear our prayer, O Lord. P. Holy God, Blessed Lord, we thank you for all the good people of faith that you have raised up among us for the work of the gospel. Multiply our gifts by your Holy Spirit. Be in our hands and our minds and our words that we might bring your love to the world. And prosper our work to the glory of your holy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C. Amen P. God has made you one people through your baptism into Christ. Through your brothers and sisters, you know his peace and love. Page | 11 P The peace of the Lord be with you always. C And also with you. All exchange the sign of peace with each other, then sit. The offering is received. Choir Anthem: Ev’ry Time I Feel the Spirit, Negro Spiritual arr. Blessed are you, O God, ruler of heaven and earth. Day by day you shower us with blessings. Page | 13 Thanksgiving at the Table Great Thanksgiving ..................................................................................................................................Spoken P: Blessed are you, O God of the universe. Your mercy is everlasting and your faithfulness endures from age to age. Praise to you for creating the heavens and the earth. Praise to you for saving the earth from the waters of the flood. Praise to you for bringing the Israelites safely through the sea. Praise to you for leading your people through the wilderness to the land of milk and honey. Praise to you for the words and deeds of Jesus, your anointed one. Praise to you for the death and resurrection of Christ. Praise to you for your Spirit poured out on all nations. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. With this bread and cup we remember our Lord's Passover from death to life as we proclaim the mystery of faith: C: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. O God of resurrection and new life: Pour out your Holy Spirit on us and on these gifts of bread and wine. Bless this feast. Grace our table with your presence. C: Come, Holy Spirit. Reveal yourself to us in the breaking of the bread. Raise us up as the body of Christ for the world. Breathe new life into us. Send us forth, burning with justice, peace, and love. C: Come, Holy Spirit. With your holy ones of all times and places, with the earth and all its creatures, with sun and moon and stars, we praise you, O God, blessed and holy Trinity, now and forever. C: Amen.
