Intermountain Healthcare celebrates our 40th anniversary this month, providing an opportunity to reflect on our mission, milestones, and aspirations as an organization. “The original charge to become a model healthcare system has been repeated countless times over the years,” said Intermountain CEO Charles Sorenson, MD. “We still strive to fulfill that charge today. It’s a moving target, because we always find ways to improve.” Intermountain’s Mission, “helping people live the healthiest lives possible,” and our Vision, “be a model health system by providing extraordinary care and superior service at an affordable cost,” reflect Intermountain’s commitment from the time our organization was founded on April 1, 1975. Even though Intermountain Healthcare was at that time a system of hospitals, the first board chose a name that trustees hoped would encompass a very broad definition of healthcare—one that included an emphasis on helping people achieve their best possible health as well as providing the best possible care in all types of settings. We’ve continually added new capabilities in order to serve people more effectively. In the 1980s we created the health plans division now known as SelectHealth, and in the 1990s we created the Intermountain Medical Group, which offers employment to physicians. Both of these additions allow Intermountain to interact with people outside emphasis on helping people achieve their best possible health as well as providing the best possible care in all types of settings. Both of these additions allow Intermountain to interact with people outside —as well as inside—the hospital setting to more effectively engage them in their health and care. “Our challenges are many,” said Dr. Sorenson, “but so are our opportunities. By focusing on our Mission, Vision, and Values, we can expect to remain on track and continue to help people live the healthiest lives possible for generations to come.” Available on the Trustee Resource Center is a video of a CEO Panel featuring the three leaders who have served as CEO since Intermountain was founded: Scott Parker, Bill Nelson, and Dr. Charles Sorenson. Update on the implementation of iCentra. 2 of 12 4/20/15, 8:20 PM Intermountain’s iCentra leadership team provides the following update: iCentra is the fully integrated electronic health record, practice management, and revenue cycle system Intermountain Healthcare is configuring with Cerner. It uses a common platform for data and information, allowing our nurses and physicians to know more about their patients and their clinical outcomes. More importantly, iCentra will connect consumers, members, and patients with their care teams by sharing appropriate clinical data to promote health and, when needed, help them manage their medical conditions. With iCentra, consumers can share their goals in the patient portal and work with our teams to achieve them. SelectHealth and Intermountain Healthcare are developing an innovative way to partner with employers and their employees to achieve better health, better care, and affordable and predictable health insurance premiums. The new health plans product is being introduced in 2015 and will be effective beginning January 1, 2016, for large employers (100 or more eligible employees) willing to make shared commitments on behalf of themselves and their employees. These commitments represent ways of engaging employees and their families to improve their health and make more informed choices about care. SelectHealth expects this unique four-way partnership among employers, employees, providers, and SelectHealth to result in high-value care, better patient experiences, and greater member satisfaction, accompanied by more affordable and predictable premiums. SelectHealth is meeting with large employers and their consultants to discuss how this new approach may fit with the employer’s long-term objectives. SelectHealth will also work with those who are not ready to make the required commitments so they can be prepared for this opportunity in the future. SelectHealth, Intermountain, and physicians participating in our Shared Accountability file:///Volumes/revolver/Brian Kearney Inc/2009 Intermountain iss... network are working in a model that aligns incentives to provide care at an affordable cost. Employers and their employees also have incentives to work closely with their providers to collaborate in making decisions affecting their care and its cost. Intermountain Trustee | April 2015 4 of 12 “We believe a highly engaged, collaborative relationship between individuals and their providers is the foundation for better health, better care, and affordable costs,” said Pat Richards, CEO of SelectHealth. “This is a sustainable model, driving continued innovation, cost management, and better health outcomes.” Numerous tools are used to support the partnership, including innovative product designs, engaging wellness programs, care management, digital communication applications, and cost transparency. “Our new product represents a long-term commitment to provide high-value care at an affordable cost, while helping people live the healthiest lives possible,” Richards said. Intermountain will launch Health Answers service in May. 4/20/15, 8:20 PM Intermountain will launch Health Answers service in May. To support patients, SelectHealth members, and others, Intermountain Healthcare will launch a new phone service in May called Health Answers. The service will be staffed by registered nurses 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Health Answers call center will be open around the clock to answer medical questions for patients and provide clinical follow-up if they’ve recently been discharged from the hospital. The nurses will respond to concerns by phone and, if necessary, refer patients to the most appropriate care setting. The new call center will use nationally standardized protocols to offer home-based remedies, recommendations on when to see a provider, and even save a place in line at InstaCare clinics. Health Answers will also offer a post-discharge calling service to contact patients file:///Volumes/revolver/Brian Kearney Inc/2009 Intermountain iss... within one or two days of discharge from a hospital or emergency room visit to ensure they’ve made a seamless transition back to their primary care providers. The Health Answers team will help find solutions to traditional healthcare difficulties, such as understanding discharge instructions, getting a prescription filled, or even finding a 4/20/15, 8:20 PM suitable primary care provider. Post-discharge calling eventually will reach all patients, starting at Intermountain Medical Center and expanding across the system throughout the year. Intermountain Trustee | April 2015 5 of 12 A transparency initiative regarding patient experience data will begin this summer. A transparency initiative regarding patient experience data will begin this summer. For many years, Intermountain hospitals, the Medical Group, and SelectHealth have used a third-party vendor to collect patient experience data and have shared that data with clinicians. This summer, Intermountain will begin sharing patient experience data with the public in a transparent manner. Patients seeing a physician as an outpatient in an office visit setting will be asked nine questions about their interaction with the physician. A third-party vendor will convert patient responses to those questions into star ratings that will be posted on the provider’s profile along with verbatim comments. Comments will be reviewed. Any questionable comment will be flagged and evaluated before posting. Comments that contain vulgar or profane language will not be posted. Surveys will be conducted on a randomized basis for clinicians employed by Intermountain and independent affiliated physicians who participate on one or more of the SelectHealth provider panels. By logging onto Intermountain’s physician portal, clinicians will have access to their own data and any comments made. Transparency initiatives like Intermountain’s arefile:///Volumes/revolver/Brian increasingly common in healthcare. Kearney Inc/2009 Intermountain iss... In a recent Brookings Institution report, Disruptive Entrepreneurship Is Transforming U.S. Health Care, Intermountain Healthcare is prominently featured as a national leader. Brookings Institution is a Washington, D.C.-based not-for-profit public policy organization devoted to independent research and innovative policy solutions. The report outlines the trend toward investing in healthcare innovation and technology startups. In particular, the report focuses on the idea of traditional healthcare delivery systems partnering with such groups to improve productivity and value. The basic premise of the report is that “changes in economic incentives, which put a premium on maximizing value and health rather than cost and treatment, have given rise to an entrepreneurial, value-maximizing ecosystem.” The report states this change is being driven by “disruptors,” including Intermountain Healthcare. The author, Jonathan Rauch, includes examples from Intermountain and comments from Intermountain leaders throughout the report.
