India to help SAARC countries become Polio free: Govt New Delhi : Government today said that India has come forward to make the SAARC countries Polio free. Talking to reporters after the 5th meeting of the Health Ministers of SAARC countries in New Delhi, Health Minister JP Nadda said that a resolution has been adopted in this regard and a comprehensive strategy will be developed to make the SAARC region polio free. Mr Nadda stressed that the SAARC countries have to work together for promoting public health, preventing disease and ensure high quality of health of the citizens. He said, unseasonal rainfall and changes in weather pattern have led to change in disease pattern as well. The Minister said, SAARC countries must work together to mitigate and contain the adverse impact of climate change. More Indians reaching home from Yemen New Delhi : 176 Indian nationals evacuated from Yemen reached Kochi in two different flights this morning. 108 people reached the Kochi International Airport in a special Air India flight at 3.30 am, while another 68 people arrived in the Indian Air Force flight at 4 am. Indian Air Force’s second C-17 plane with 150 passengers from strife -torn Yemen has landed at Chhatrapati Shivaji International airport in Mumbai at around 8 am via Kochi. Air Force spokesperson informed this to AIR. First C-17 plane carrying 223 evacuees landed in Mumbai last night around 11 PM. PM launches MUDRA Bank to provide credit to small entrepreneurs New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched MUDRA or Micro Units Development Re-finance Agency in New Delhi. The Prime Minister said, the MUDRA bank, with a corpus of Rs 20,000 crore, will provide credit of up to Rs 10 lakh to small entrepreneurs and act as a regulator for Micro-Finance Institutions MFIs to promote their growth. Mr Modi said, it is a step in the right direction of funding the unfunded. He also said that, if the government will give a little help to those who generate this employment then a big change can be brought in the country. Endorsing the small entrepreneurs, Prime Minister Modi said, while big industrial houses provide jobs to only 1.25 core people, the small entrepreneurs give employment to 12 crore people and the government can not afford to ignore them. The Bank will provide institutional finance to 5.77 crore small business units in the country to achieve higher GDP and generate employment opportunities.The government had proposed The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi launching the Pradhan Mantri MUDRA (Micro Units Development and Refinance Agency) Yojana, in New Delhi on April 08, 2015. MUDRA Bank is set up through a statutory enactment and will be responsible for developing and refinancing through a Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana. TRAI recommends 112 as single emergency number for India New Delhi : Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has proposed that a single number ‘112’ can be used for all emergency phone-calls across the country including for police, fire and ambulance. It said in its recommendations that similar to the ‘911’, an allin-one emergency service in the US, government can integrate all existing emergency numbers such as 100, 101, 102 and 108 into the proposed ‘112’ helpline number. The regulator suggested that the existing emergency numbers can be retained as secondary numbers. TRAI also recommended setting up of Public Safety Answering Points to handle people’s call in distress. PM launches PRAGATI: a multi-purpose, multi-modal platform New Delhi : PM Narendra Modi on Wednesday launched his ambitious multi-purpose and multimodal platform PRAGATI (Pro-Active Governance and Timely Implementation) in New Delhi.PRAGATI is a unique integrating and interactive platform. The platform is aimed at addressing common man’s grievances, and simultaneously monitoring and reviewing important programmes and projects of the Government of India as well as projects flagged by state governments. Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister said the whole world is now observing India keenly. It is imperative that governance in India becomes more efficient and responsive. He said the PRAGATI platform was a step in this direction. During the first PRAGATI interaction on Wednesday, the Prime Minister discussed issues relating to unseasonal rain and relief to farmers, public grievances, project implementation, Swachh Bharat. The interaction lasted for two hours. The programme will be tied together by technology, with information on projects being available at a click. The Pragati sessions will take place every fourth Wednesday. Virtual Call Centre of National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) Launched New Delhi : The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of School Education and Literacy, Government of India has launched a Virtual Call Centre today. The Call Centre of NCTE was inaugurated by Shri Jan-eAlam, Joint Secretary, Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India in the presence of Prof Santosh Panda, Chairperson, NCTE. The Virtual Call Centre is aimed to provide a platform to all the stakeholders ie students, teachers and the general public to seek any clarification regarding working of the NCTE, application for the recognition of teacher education institutions, teacher education courses and any other issues including any complaints/ grievances pertaining to NCTE. The Virtual Call Centre will operate from 9.00 AM to 6.00 PM every day. The caller can contact through a toll-free number 1800110039 and will be provided the available information with the Centre and if any information which is not available with them, the caller will be connected to the four Regional Offices of the NCTE functioning at Jaipur, Bangalore, Bhopal, and Bhubaneshwar. The launch of Virtual Call Centre will be another step on the part of Government of India to provide transparency in the governance and also speedy redressal of grievances. The NCTE is a regulatory body mandated to achieve planned and coordinated development of teacher education in the country and is duty bound for speedy redressal of grievances if any, arising out of its bonafde action. THE LAKSHADWEEP TIMES 08 April, 2015 Page 2 PM inaugurates Conference of State Environment and Forest Ministers New Delhi : The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi said, India, which has had a long tradition of living in harmony with nature, should lead the global fight against climate change. Inaugurating the Conference of State Environment and Forest Ministers in New Delhi the Prime Minister expressed disappointment that India’s culture of respecting and loving nature has not been sufficiently projected on the global arena, and the country is occasionally perceived to be a barrier in the global fight against climate change. The Prime Minister said the people of India have been the protectors and devotees of nature. He said we need to project this fact properly, so that the world realizes that India cannot be questioned in this regard. He said Indians have always conserved nature, and even today, have among the lowest percapita carbon emission, globally. He said the way forward is not just restrictions, but changing lifestyles. He said the culture of recycle and re-use is not new for India. Instead of being forced to follow parameters laid down by others, India should lead the world in the fight against climate change, he added. Shri Narendra Modi said development and environment protection can go hand in hand, but there are serious misconceptions being spread in this regard. Giving the example of the Land Acquisition Bill, he said the provisions of the Bill do not touch tribal and forest land. But serious misconceptions and lies are being spread about this Bill. He urged those spreading such lies, to desist from doing so, and said these attempts to misguide society are harming the nation. The Prime Minister called upon the world to ease restrictions for India on import of nuclear fuel, so that India could also produce clean nuclear energy in a big way. He said the Mission Indradhanush: Mega immunisation drive launched to vaccinate children by 2020 New Delhi : On the occasion World Health Day a massive immunisation campaign Mission Indradhanush began all over the country to cover all children who are either unvaccinated or only partially vaccinated against seven preventable diseases by 2020. Health Minister JP Nadda in a tweet said that the campaign will cover all children up to two years and pregnant women from the period from April upto July. He stressed that the programme will be monitored for its effective implementation. Depicting seven colors of the rainbow, Mission Indradhanush will provide vaccination to children against diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, polio, tuberculosis, measles and hepatitis B. The mission in addition will also provide vaccination against Japanese Encephalitis and Haemophilus influenza Type B in selected districts. Mr Nadda said, the ministry has involved the Members of Parliament to publicise the mission. The focus of the mission will be on 201 highpriority districts with largest number of partiallyvaccinated and unvaccinated children during the first phase. Under the second phase, 297 more districts will be covered. Release of additional installment of Dearness Allowance to Central Government employees and Dearness Relief to Pensioners, due from 1.1.2015 New Delhi : The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, gave its approval to release an additional installment of Dearness Allowance (DA) to Central Government employees and Dearness Relief (DR) to pensioners with effect from 01.01.2015 at the rate of six percent increase over the existing rate of 107 percent. Hence, Central Government employees as well as pensioners are entitled for DA/DR at the rate of 113 percent of the basic pay with effect from 01.01.2015. The increase is in accordance with the accepted formula based on the recommendations of the 6th Central Pay Commission. Government is focusing on clean energy generation in a big way, through solar radiation, wind and biomass. The Prime Minister, who was presented a report on the status of tigers in India, expressed satisfaction at the reported increase in the country’s tiger population, and said it was an illustration of India’s commitment to respect for nature. Earlier, the Prime Minister visited an exhibition at the Conference venue. He released a “Standard Terms of Reference for Environment Impact Analysis”, which was described by the Union Environment Minister Shri Prakash Javadekar as a step that would contribute to “ease of doing business.” The Prime Minister also launched a National Air Quality Index, which will monitor the quality of air in major urban centres across the country on a real-time basis. th 5 SAARC health meet in New Delhi today New Delhi : The 5 th meeting of the Health Ministers of SAARC countries will be held in New Delhi. It will be preceded by meetings of SAARC expert group on HIV/Aids, Health and Technical Committee on Health and Population and senior health officials. The meetings are being held in pursuance of decisions taken by the SAARC Summit of Heads of State or Governments held at Kathmandu in November last year. The meetings will deliberate and provide guidance and a road map for s t r e n g t h e n i n g collaboration among SAARC countries on a number of issues and challenges faced by these countries. SAARC countries comprising India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, account for nearly a quarter of the world population and face similar health challenges and issues. The combined impact on the exchequer on account of both DA and DR would be of the order of Rs. 6762.24 crore per annum and Rs. 7889.34 crore in the Financial Year 2015-16 ( i.e. for a period of 14 months from January 2015 to February 2016). This will benefit 48 lakh government employees and 55 lakh pensioners. SBI, ICICI bank, HDFC bank cut lending rates New Delhi : Major Banks, including the State Bank of India, HDFC and ICICI have announced cut in their lending rates after RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan expressed strong disappointment over nontransmission of policy rates. India’s biggest lender, the State Bank of India has lowered its base lending rate by 0.15 percentage point to 9.85 per cent. The new rate will be effective from the 10th of this month. The private sector HDFC Bank also cut lending rate by 0.15 per cent to 9.85 percent effective from the 13th, while the ICICI Bank announced cutting base lending rate by 0.25 percentage point to 9.75 per cent. After announcing the cut, SBI Chairman Arundhanti Bhattacharya said that other lenders should follow the move and lower their rates. She also hinted at lowering of deposit rates. The cut was announced despite the Chiefs of these banks had earlier yesterday said that lowering of interest rate will not be possible just as yet. Govt to come out with rules to tackle hazards posed by construction waste New Delhi : The Environment Ministry has decided to come out with rules to deal with the health hazards posed by the waste generated from construction of various infrastructure projects. Union Environment Minister Prakash 30 crore landless people to get job after land bill amendments: Jaitley Javadekar, while speaking New Delhi : Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said about 30 crore landless people will get employment in the industrial corridors following amendments to the land acquisition bill 2015. Speaking during the launch of MUDRA Bank in New Delhi, Mr Jaitley said that it is the priority of the government to provide employment to the people and steps are being taken Delhi in that direction. In the context of Land Acquistion Bill, the government has been facing stiff resistance from opposition parties over the bill . Congress and other opposition parties have made it clear that they will not support the Land Acquisition Bill in its present form in the Rajya Sabha. German envoy thanks India for rescuing nationals from Yemen New Delhi : Germany‘s Ambassador in New Delhi Michael Steiner expressed his gratitude to India after Indian security forces helped rescue stranded German nationals from the strife-hit Yemen. Briefing media in New Delhi, Mr Steiner particularly thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj for the gesture.
