Chemical Peel Handout
Chemical peeling is used to improve the skin’s appearance by applying a chemical solution to the skin, causing the top
layers of skin to separate and peel off. The new skin is smoother and may be more even in color.
What can a chemical peel do?



Treat mild scarring and certain types of acne
Can reduce skin discoloration, such as sun spots, age spots, liver spots, freckles, or blotchiness
Refresh skin texture and color
Prior to treatment, please stop all Retin-A products for 3 days and do not use them for 5 days after your peel.
If you are prone to fever blisters, make sure to take your medication 1 day prior to the peel.
Strengths of chemical peels offered are:
Salicylic Acid 30%
Glycolic Acid 30% and 60%
TCA 15% (called the Triplex peel)
What to expect:
Expect possible light peeling with the Salicylic Acid peel.
Expect a light peeling of 2-5 days with the 30% Glycolic Acid peel and a medium peeling of 2-7 days with the 60% Glycolic
Acid peel.
Expect 2-7 days of peeling with the Triplex peel.
With all of the peels, there may be tingling or stinging. You may be given cooling air to help with this. The treatment
takes 2-4 minutes. You may have redness the day of the treatment and up to 3-5 days after the treatment. During the
peel, you have the option of leaving the peel on for up to 8-12 hours after the treatment for better results.
What are the limitations of peels?




Cannot tighten loose or sagging skin
Does not remove deep scars
Cannot change pore size
Does not help deep wrinkles
Peels usually take multiple treatments for best results spaced 2+ weeks apart. At a minimum a package of 6 peels is
recommended. After your peel you will be given a post care handout that includes what to do to obtain and keep the
best results following your peels. This includes staying out of the sun and/or wearing a sunscreen with SPF 30 or
higher containing Zinc Oxide.
