Press Statement After just two days in court, Botlhokwane gets two
Press Statement After just two days in court, Botlhokwane gets two life sentences for murdering young lesbian, Disebo Makau Pule Stoffel Botlhokwane (25). Photo by Gugu Mandla On Wednesday 20 May 2015, at the Potchesfstoom High Court, North West Province, Judge Kruger sentenced Pule Stoffel Botlhokwane two life terms and fifteen years for robbery. He was charged for: (i) Murder, (ii) Rape, and (iii) Robbery From the moment the perpetrator took his stand, he showed little remorse for what he did. “What he did to the victim, knowing that she was in a same sex relationship proves that he is a violent and intolerant person” said Judge Kruger. The judge went further and said: “The perpetrator took Disebo Gift Makau’s life away, from a partner with whom they were planning to grow together and even get married.” Botlhokwane’s representative appealed but this plea was denied. Advocate Koetze stood up and gave reasons to why the accused should never be given a chance to appeal. “I do not see why any other court will see this case any different nor the perpetrator getting a sentence lower than this. He is a violent, dangerous and a vicious gangster” he continued. Supporters for justice. Photo by Gugu Mandla Since the start of the trial, Thandi Makau, Disebo’s mother had been extremely emotional. However, today she jumped for joy, as did the rest of the family and the LGBTI community. “I am very happy today. This boy got what he deserves. I’ve had so many sleepless nights not knowing when all this will end, now I will go to bed in peace,” said Thandi Makau. “I would like to than Iranti-org and the LGBTI community for their support,” she said. Justice was finally served today. The LGBTI community chanted songs of thanks. The community commends the prosecutor, Advocate Kotze for standing with them and ensuring that Pule Botlhokwane remains behind bars. www.iranti-org.co.za
