“our stock changes rapidly, so what we have today we
may not have tomorrow!”
Kitchener is Ontario’s hotbed of hands-on history. This
city boasts an incredible collection of living, breathing,
interactive historical museums, and they all offer an
enthusiastic welcome to visitors. Heritage is very much
alive and well – and welcoming – in Kitchener.
The Waterloo Region Museum is the new gateway to
Doon Heritage Village, a
carefully and accurately
recreated village set in
1914. The dynamic, awardwinning new Waterloo
Region Museum offers visitors a full array of
exhibits. Waterloo Region
Museum is always a busy
place; Canada Day is celebrated (July 1, of course),
with free admission, 9:30
to 5 p.m.; in the fall, the
village gets hands-on with
harvesting activities.

market in the heart of
downtown Kitchener. The
Kitchener Market includes
a Farmers’ Market every
Saturday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.,
and features international
cuisine and merchant vendors, Tuesday through
Saturday. The Farmers’
Market also includes a full
menu of special events,
from Kids Hip Hop concerts to cooking classes
with top chefs
Kitchener offers a very
wide range of shopping
opportunities, from the

The grandaddy of all local celebrations is the enormous

many family-oriented events, Canada’s largest Thanksgiving Day Parade (Monday, Oct. 8), concerts that range

something for everyone.
One of the best-known places for fun in the entire
province is located here – Bingemans, with camping, Big

ST. JACOBS
St. Jacobs is a spectacular tourism success story, a
small community that has become one of the preeminent
visitor attractions in the country. In fact, the St. Jacobs
“district” reaches well beyond the boundaries of the village of St. Jacobs, because there is just too much good
stuff here to be confined within official municipal boundaries. That’s why some of the key St. Jacobs attractions,
such as the Outlet Mall, the Farmers Market and Market
Road Antiques, are all located a few short kilometers
south of the enticing village.
Both in the village and in the Market district, visitors will
find the biggest welcome mat imaginable. The choices
available to shoppers are unbelievable, and other entertainment opportunities abound.
Shoppers can be excused if their heads spin at the
options, for a few moments. Where to start? There are
the 30 shops of the busy St. Jacobs Factory Outlet Mall,
the authentic and multi-faceted St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market & Flea Market, the multiple dealers in the Market
Road Antiques and, of course, the village of St. Jacobs,
itself.
The truth is, it doesn’t
really matter where you
start, as long as you have
allowed plenty of time to
take in the vast variety of
friendly, welcoming stores,
shops, and attractions.
This is not really a village
at all – it is a district offering a world of possibilities.
And yet, visitors discover
that the small-town atmos-

Events & Festivals
Worth The Trip
There are some very special events that take place each summer, a little farther afield
from the heart of Visitor Country. The world-renowned Elora Festival offers the very
best in musical performances from July 13 through August 5. We are pleased to recommend the Goderich Celtic Roots Festival, August 10-12, an annual celebration of the
music, craft and culture of the Celtic nations.
New Hamburg welcomes the Mopar nation in August. Renison College in Waterloo
hosts the authentic East Asian Festival, Sept. 29. Of course, the rollicking KW Oktoberfest is world-famous, Oct. 5-13, and looking ahead, the wonderful, traditional Christkindl
Market is held in Kitchener, from Dec. 6-9.

Christkindl Markets have been part of the festive time for centuries in
Germany, with the oldest recorded in 1310 in Munich. As the custom
of giving gifts at Christmas grew so did the development of
Christkindl markets. They became a popular place for the sale of children's toys, gift items and seasonal food specialties.

WATERLOO
Waterloo is smart, in
every sense of the word –
intelligent, chic, sophisticated. A community doesn’t like to brag, but when
the most famous scientist
in the world says nice
things about you, it’s hard
not to be proud. British
physicist Stephen Hawking has visited Waterloo,
through his ongoing
involvement with the

comments about the city
have been full of praise.
He said, “The importance
of special places at special

will happen here.”
This is a city known for its
two highly regarded universities – Wilfrid Laurier

important research centres and think tanks
including the Perimeter

• Len’s Mill Stores are – as a wise man once said –
ubiquitous. You’ll find one of these famous fabrics and
more stores in most of the communities in Visitor Country – Brantford, Cambridge, Guelph, Hawkesville, Waterloo... nine locations in all. The stores are known for fabric, yarn, quilting supplies, clothing, housewares, drapery
supplies, craft supplies, scrapbook supplies, food, bedding, towels, gifts and even their bridal departments.
Len’s Mill Store still carries the distinctive stamp of its
founder, the late Len Menary; his son, Bruce, is now President. But the best known face of these whimsical and
very popular stores is their pink spokes-flamingo.
