Breakfast at the hotel & proceed to visit Elephanta caves
Elephanta Caves: Located one hour by boat out of Mumbai, are the rock-cut
temples on peaceful Elephanta Island. Thought to have been carved
between 450 and 750 AD, the temples survived Portuguese vandalism (one
cave was reputedly used by a Portuguese battalion as a shooting gallery)
and remain equal in size, beauty and power to the caves at Ajanta and
Ellora. The main cave contains large sculpted panels relating to Siva,
including the astonishing 6m/20ft-high triple-headed Trimurti - in which Siva
embodies the roles of creator, preserver and destroyer.In 1987, it was
designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
First, transfer to the jetty at the Gateway of India to board chartered boats (small local launches) to Elephanta
Island where you will see a 8th-century shrine cut from the hillside. Among the sculptures is the magnificent
"Maheshmurti," or Hindu Trinity, representing the three aspects of Shiva the Creator, the Preserver and the
Destroyer. These caves provide an exciting glimpse of Indian sculpture dating from about 600 A.D. Huge panels
depict episodes relating to Lord Shiva, each executed with power, grace and an amazing sense of movement.
Located on an island in Mumbai harbor, these are a complex of temples hewn from the rock, dated to between AD
450 and 750. The temples are adorned with intricate sculptures of Hindu gods. The island rises in two conical
hillocks. The architect sculptors carved out of solid basalt rock create a representation of the heavenly mountain
residence of Lord Shiva. Opening out from three sides, the temple lets in light from many angles making the
sculptures seem to move with the changing angles of light. Inside the temple is a large hall, with nine sculptured
panels representing Lord Shiva in different moods. The temple plan is symmetric with important focal points worked
out in a geometric Mandala (the design representing the energy field). Flights of steps, which can prove to be very
daunting, take you to the caves. One can hire a chair to be carried up, but today the caves can be easily
approached. The artisan has tried to create the cave similar to the one in which Shiva resides in the Himalayas.
The pillars inside the cave give an impression that these pillars support the roof. The pillars have been deliberately
kept simple so as to attract the attention towards the exquisite carvings on the panels. There are three opening to
the caves allowing light to enter from various angles in different seasons giving an expression that the images are
moving with transition of light.
Afternoon proceed for city tour of Mumbai.- the great port city with its Victorian Gothic buildings from the British
Raj Era mingling with the modern. Gateway of India: Mumbai's principal landmark, the Gateway of India is a huge
archway on the water's edge. This famous monument was built to commemorate the visit of the first ever British
Monarch, King George V and Queen Mary in 1911. It is 26m high structures, complete with four turrets and intricate
latticework carved into the yellow basalt stone. Behind the arch, there are steps leading down to the water. Here,
one can get onto one of the bobbing little motor launches, for a short cruise through Mumbai's splendid natural
harbour. Drive down for Dhobhi ghat & drop at market.
Crawford Market: Named after Bombay's first municipal commissioner, Arthur Crawford, the Crawford Market is at
the northern end of the old British part of the town, and faces the crowded inner city. An elegant covered market, it
dominates the skyline with its clock tower and steeple. The cavernous spaces inside are divided into sections for
fruits, vegetables and meat. The building, completed in 1869, was donated to the city by Cowasji Jehangir. The
friezes on the outside walls and the stone fountains inside were designed by Lockwood Kipling.

Aurangabad is an important city in the state of Maharashtra, India. It sees a lot of international tourist traffic due to
world heritage sites, Ajanta and Ellora caves. Aurangabad, a dream destination of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb,
founded in 1610, is known today, as one of the four important cities in Maharashtra. The city is heading towards
rapid industrial growth, but retains its past glory and charms, heritage and traditions. Conspicuously seen on the
Deccan plateau, it has a rich culture and a plethora of magnificent arts on display.

Day 4 :
Aurangabad
Breakfast at the hotel & then proceed for full day excursion of Ajanta & Ellora caves.
AJANTA is world's greatest historical monument recognised by UNESCO far near from
Jalgaon city of Maharashtra, India. There are 30 caves in Ajanta of which 9, 10, 19, 26
and 29 are chaitya-grihas and the rest are monasteries. These caves were discovered in
AD 1819 and were built up in the earlier 2nd century BC-AD. Most of the paintings in
Ajanta are right from 2nd century BC-AD and some of them about the fifth century AD
and continued for the next two centuries. All paintings shows heavy religious influence
and centre around Buddha, Bodhisattvas, incidents from the life of Buddha and the
Jatakas. The paintings are executed on a ground of mud-plaster in the tempera
technique.
Ellora Caves: There are 34 caves, of which 12 are Buddhist, 17 Hindu and
5 Jain. The caves all face west, so are best seen in the afternoon. The
Buddhist caves are to your far right as you face the curve of the
Charanadari Hill, then come the Hindu ones, and finally, the Jain cave
temples to the far left.
Although not too far removed from the Ajanta caves in terms of both space
and time, the chaityas and viharas of Ellora are architecturally and
sculpturally different. Compared to the Ajanta paintings and sculptures, the
Ellora representations are more earthly, drawing elements from the Vajrayana school of Buddhism which was
permeated with primitive ideas of magic and mysticism. So, the dwarapalas that flank each doorway, the gigantic
Boddhisattavas and their consorts have a robust earthiness about them
