Information on Class Enrollment - International Summer Exchange
INTERNATIONAL SUMMER EXCHANGE PROGRAM
OFFICE OF THE DEAN OF STUDENTS
THE HONG KONG UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
Information on Class Enrollment
All students participating in ISP must be enrolled in at least 1 class by the time they arrive at HKUST. Please
read through the below information carefully for instructions on how to enroll in classes and finalize your
class timetable.
Program Requirement
ISP participants are required to take at least 1 and up to 3 courses during the program period. The total
number of credits taken must be within the normal course load for Summer Term, i.e., between 3 and 9
credits. Students will not be allowed to participate in ISP at any time their course load falls below 3 credits.
Those who wish to take more than 9 credits must obtain approval from HKUST before the class enrollment
period.
Class Enrollment
Your class enrollment and add/drop activities will be done through the ISP Team. The enrollment process is
outlined below followed by important concepts and definitions. We will send you instructions and
reminders throughout the enrollment process until your class timetables are finalized.

January to March
Students submit study plans to ISP Team via

approvals and requisites waivers from relevant courseoffering departments
ISP Team releases the following information to students:

study plans and approvals obtained)
 Confirmed class schedules and add/drop deadlines

Requisites Waivers
If a course has pre-requisite or co-requisite requirements, the ISP Team will forward your transcript and
relevant supporting documents to request for requisites waivers from the course-offering department
and/or the course instructor. A requisite waiver will be given if the justification to override the requisite
requirements is deemed sufficient. Students will not be able to enroll in a class if they fail to obtain the
requisites waiver.
Special Approvals
Special approval from ISP and/or the relevant academic unit is required for:
a) Credit overload
In general, ISP students within their duration of study should enroll in no more than 3 courses and no
more than 9 credit units.
b) Taking courses not listed in the ISP course list
ISP students are generally only allowed to take courses listed on the ISP course list. Students granted
approval to take courses outside of the list are still required to take at least one other course offered
under ISP.
Preliminary Enrollment
The ISP Team will enroll you into classes based on your study plan, relevant approvals, and seat availabilities.
In the situation where a class is full, you will be automatically placed in the waiting list. Students on the
waiting list will automatically move up in the queue or be enrolled when a seat becomes available.
Making Adjustments to Your Enrolled Classes
Confirmed class schedules are usually available in early April. The ISP Team will then notify you of your
preliminary enrolled classes. Adjustments will generally involve the following actions:
 Swap – If you want to change from one class to another, the original class will NOT be dropped until
the new class has successfully been added. This action will not affect the number of your class
enrollments.
 Add – This is simply adding a course on top of your enrolled classes. The number of your class
enrollments will be increased (but will be capped at 3).
 Drop – Drop requests facilitate students to (1) drop a class which enrollment is already confirmed; or
(2) remove a wait-listing class from the enrollment record. Make sure that you drop the waiting
request if you subsequently decide not to enroll for the class.
Each student is allowed to submit their adjustment request only once before the submission deadline. If
more than one adjustment request is received, only the first submission will be considered.
Add/Drop Period
Students are allowed to submit add/drop requests to the ISP Team during add/drop period; number of
requests are not limited but must be received by the add/drop deadline. Please note that every course has
its own different add/drop deadline. Add/drop requests will NOT be considered after the deadline.
