Seniors Amanda Cao, Sandy Chesterton, Elise Thomas, Ryan Thornton and Emily Zhao have been
named finalists in the Presidential Scholars program.
Grant Riew ’15 has been chosen as a cellist in the National Youth Orchestra USA. The 120 musicians in
the orchestra will go on tour, with engagements at Carnegie Hall and in China this summer.
Josh Kazdan ’16 took first place in the 2015 Academy of Science-St. Louis Science Fair, earning him
a $3,000 scholarship and an all-expense-paid trip to Pittsburgh for the next level of competition, the
Intel International Science & Engineering Fair. Olivia Long ’16 was a finalist, and Will Wolfe ’15 was a
semifinalist in the competition.
Zane Norton ’15 will represent Burroughs as the 2015 St. Louis Post-Dispatch Scholar Athlete.
Nick Kime ’18 has been selected as one of 12 students nationwide to receive the AATG (American
Association of Teachers of German)/Pädagogischer Austauschdienst Study Trip Award to Germany! As
part of this award, Nick will receive round-trip air transportation from Newark or JFK airport to Germany,
live in a home, attend classes at a gymnasium, and participate in excursions to places of cultural and
historical significance. Tentative travel dates are June 24 to July 18, 2015.
Helen Pan’s ’16 dragon and Sydney Tischler’s ’16 teapot
were accepted into the K12 National Ceramic Exhibition held
in Providence, Rhode Island, during the National Conference
on Education of the Ceramic Arts. Both received honorable
mentions for excellence in the ceramic arts. Sina McLin ’15
received an art scholarship from the University of Tulsa, which
she will be attending next year.
Fourteen students had works accepted into the 2015 Young Artists’ Showcase. The exhibit, sponsored by
the St. Louis Artists Guild recognizes artwork created by high school students between 15 and 19 years
old. The exhibit runs from April 12 through 25 at Old North St. Louis Restoration Group (2700 N. 14 Street,
63106). All are invited to an opening for the exhibit from 1 to 3 pm, Sunday, April 12. The students who will
have work on display are Tom Bolstad ’16, Stella Erickson ’18, Katherine Feldmann ’16, Paul Gill ’17,
Rebecca Kiesel ’16, Emily Koykka ’15, Maya Menon ’16, Matthew Munger ’17, Noah Sock ’17, Olivia
Smith ’17, Elana Stettin ’15, Lina Willey ’16, Tiffany Yao ’15, Emily Zhao ’15.
Julia Riew ’17 took second place in the high school fine art division of the Crafting Original Music Project
sponsored by the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Music. She also took second place (level 1)
in Webster University’s Community Music School Young Composers Competition. Julia’s work, “Laughing
Lake” for string quartet, was premiered at the 2014 JBS fall orchestra concert.
Burroughs chemisry students claimed six of the top 15 positions in the sophomore division of the St. Louis
branch of the American Chemical Society’s high school chemistry competition. Noah Sock ’17 took first
place, and Ian Bradley ’17, Jake Kovalic ’17, Henry Arneson ’17, Jon Ince ’17 and Caroline Creighton
’17 received honorable mentions. In the AP division, Amanda Cao ’15 placed second and Olivia Long ’16
received an honorable mention.
Congratulations to the Burroughs students who were recognized in the Missouri Regional Scholastic Art
and Writing Contest.

Irmak Karasinir ’19 placed first in her age group in the Youth Sports Climbing Competition held by Upper Limits Climbing Gym in early March. The competition, which was open to youth from Missouri and
neighboring states, is recognized by USA Climbing, the national governing body of competition climbing
in the United States.
Vickie Williams ’15 won the Burroughs round of the English Speaking Union Shakespeare competition
and represented Burroughs at the regional competition at the end of January.
Paul Salomon (Math) recently had four mathematical art pieces in a show called “Peanotopia” at SOHA
Gallery. Over spring break Mr. Salomon talked about the specifics of the math behind his work during an
artist’s talk in the gallery.

During the Future Business Leaders of America District Leadership Conference held in Chesterfield on
Tuesday, February 3, ten students qualified to compete at the state level. They claimed their slot at state

Olivia Long ’16 and Elana Stettin ’15 were selected as NCIT (National Center for Women and
Information Technology) Award for Aspirations in Computing winners (St. Louis and Southern Illinois).
The Bombers Robotics team (Team 4211) came home undefeated from the Kentucky FTC (First Tech
Challenge) Championship Tournament held on the Owensboro Community and Technical College’s main
campus on January 31. The team claimed the Captain of the Winning Alliance trophy and the Control
Award (software) trophy and was nominated for the Rockwell Collins Innovate Award. Another JBS team,
The Knights of the Data Table, qualified for the Missouri State Championship by being a member of the
three-team alliance that took first in the Missouri qualifying match held at Selvidge Middle School.
Austin Miller ’15, Katie Jackson ’17, Tara Suresh ’16 and Tiffany Yao ’15 had their ceramic art included
in “Memory: A Regional High School Ceramics Exhibition” at The Meramec Contemporary Art Gallery.
Julia Riew ’17 earned second place (level 1) in Webster University’s Community Music School Young

’17 and Michelle Tang ’16 were chosen to play in Missouri All-State Orchestra. Caroline Creighton ’17
was selected as an alternate.
Philip Barnes (Classics) directs the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus in a concert of Milhaud and Purcell at 3
pm, Sunday, February 15, at Christ Church Cathedral in downton St. Louis. More information, go to www.

Seven students were included in the Young Artists and their Teachers exhibition, which includes the best
high school art work made within a 50 mile radius of St. Louis. Congratulations to Shirley Hwang ’15,

JBS students claimed two of three awards in the ceramic catagory. Tara Suresh claimed second place and
Shirley Hwang took third.
