The Month of May
When I think of the month of May I think of blossom on the trees, especially
pink Cherry blossom.
Spring flowers have now largely given way to early summer plantings. Forsythia
and Magnolia are coming in to bloom and the days are warmer and longer.
Seedlings are sprouting on windowsills and in greenhouses, each developing plant
requiring water and nutrient rich soil.
In some ways we are a bit like plants, we need nutritious food and water. This
may keep our bodies functioning, but we also require that which will encourage our
spiritual health and development.
Recently I attended a teaching day led by Canon Michael Mitton, the title of
which was shared with that of his book ‘Travellers of the heart’.
We are all different, and at times in our lives we may need different spiritual
nutrients to what we see as the ‘usual’. At some points sitting back and watching
how others demonstrate their faith is all the intake we can manage. At others we
may need to widen our horizons and challenge ourselves with what is outside our
comfort zone.
Although Canon Michael Mitton has a C/E Parish Ministry, he embraces
elements of what might be seen as Celtic, Charismatic, Mystic and Catholic.
It is not that all and everything is helpful, and care is needed that breadth of
experience does not reduce depth of faith or effective demonstration through service.
Keeping the central Eucharistic Tradition we have at St John’s, there is perhaps
scope for embracing breadth without reducing depth.
We have recently been looking at the Sunday evening service time, and asking
whether people might have other suggestions for service types to add to those of
Sung Evensong or a Healing Service.
1
A first attempt at a wider look to the evening services has taken place, and there
may now be a service that would offer different spiritual nutrients, and still enable
your faith to grow strongly. So take a look at the Parish Diary both this month and in
the coming months to see what is on offer at this time which might challenge and
nourish you spiritually, and enable you to grow as an effective disciple of the Risen
Christ.
