HAT HiLites Los Angeles Area Council June 2015 Boy Scouts of America Holcomb Valley Scout Reservation (SGVC) and Log Cabin (LAAC) will be closed for the summer of 2015. The Los Angeles River Ranger District, USDA-Forest Service, and its associated volunteer organizations invite you and your Unit, along with the general public, to join them in celebrating National Trails Day on June 6th. See the attached flyer. The Big Ride 2015 which is sponsored by the Antelope Valley District & Troop 555 is coming up June 12-14. To sign up contact Vance Pomeroy at 661-361-5619 or vance@juniperpacific.com. In celebration of the birthday of the National Park Service on August 25th, there will be no admission fees at National Parks on that day. Water availability is expected to be an issue again this year. Check the water conditions before planning a hike in the local mountains. Tip: Make sure that the bear canisters that you use are approved by the government agency that controls the area where you will be using them. The time is ripe for Eagle projects in the local National Forests. Contact David Ledford (see below) for more information and a list of possible Eagle projects. Interested in Climbing Merit Badge? USDA Forest Service / Los Angeles River Ranger District National Trails Day 2015 DATE: Saturday, June 6, 2015, sign‐in between 8:00‐8:30am. (Mt. Wilson Gate opens at 8:00am) Event is scheduled from 8:30am‐3:30pm. LOCATION: Meet at the Mt. Wilson west parking lot, facing the pavilion. EVENT: Celebrate National Trails Day on June 6, 2015. The celebration will include 4‐6 hours of trail work on the Mt. Wilson Trail System. This event is organized by the volunteer groups of the US Forest Service, Angeles National Forest, Los Angeles River Ranger District. We will break for lunch and a short ceremony regarding National Trails Day at 1:00 pm near the Pavilion. Activities will end at 3:30 pm. This activity is open to all volunteers, including sponsored groups. Those who are volunteering for trail work for the first time, please identify yourself to the registrar at the meeting site so we can arrange for a Trail Boss to provide instruction and proper tools. Please bring your lunch and personal equipment listed below. Personal Equipment Required while Working: Long sleeve shirt, long pants, gloves, and boots are required. ANYONE NOT WEARINGREQUIRED CLOTHING WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO WORK (Anyone wearing shorts will not be allowed to participate). Bring sun protection, hard‐hat (if available – can be provided if needed), Ten Essentials (include a personal First Aid kit), water (2 Quarts),snacks, etc. Be prepared to hike about a mile and work until 12:30. You will be able to eat your lunch near the Pavilion. DIRECTIONS: From the 210 Freeway in La Canada, go north on Angeles Crest Highway(CA 2) to Clear Creek Junction (9 miles). Continue on Angeles Crest Highway and drive 4.6 miles to Red Box junction. Turn right onto Mt Wilson Road and proceed to the Mt. Wilson parking. Park in the west parking lot. Allow 50 minutes driving time from the 210 Fwy. Carpool if possible.
