Grand Isle State’s Attorney Doug DiSabito is more than just a little
concerned about the possible “regionalization” of local courts. Last week
DiSabito started an online petition asking Governor Shumlin, Senators
Mazza, Degree and McAllister and Representatives Krebs and Johnson to
“keep our courthouse (Grand Isle County) open and fully functional, with
no venue changes and the same judicial services as every other county”.
At press time, 247 individuals have signed the petition.
In the later part of March the House Appropriations Committee passed
H.490 that did a number of things that would directly impact small county
courts: it created a study group to work during the summer to examine
how systematic changes could be created to save judiciary dollars that
both the Shumlin administration and the Legislature are looking for; and
it cut $500,000 from the judiciary’s budget but then restored it for FY 2016
with one-time money equal to the $500,000 cut. The Vermont Judiciary
then amended the bill adding the ability of the Vermont Supreme Court
to direct all hearings (criminal, civil, family and probate) would be able to
be held in a county “irrespective of the county in which the venue would
lie for the case under the governing statute”.
By the time the bill hit the Senate most of the venue language had been
pulled back with the exception of the ability Court to change venue for
Termination of Parental Rights (TPR).
DiSabito said that he was pleased that Island residents would “continue
to have access to justice in our own county and in all four division of the
Superior Court.” However, the latest amendment on Regional Venue gave
him pause.

Let’s Make Some Sawdust

Grand Isle Art Works will be celebrating their fifth anniversary in July, an anniversary traditionally marked with
a gift of wood. As Owners Ellen Thompson and Jim Holzschuh put their heads together to find a way in which
they could show their appreciation to the Island communities, one of their gallery artists suggested having a
Little Free Library building party. Now having a Little Free Library (LFL) on site had been a dream of Ellen’s since
the business began. She was certain that Jim could and would build one for her, but time and years of rehabbing
a 1797 farmhouse got in
the way.
But
their
“ah-ha
moment” came when
they decided to enlarge
upon the idea and create
not just one LFL but one
for each of the five island
communities – and maybe
more!
“What if the idea was
open to include teams
of people to design their
libraries from up-cycled
materials or from LFL kits,”
said Ellen.
“And what if gallery
artists pitched in to
paint and decorate the
libraries,” added Jim.
Their plan was beginning
to take roots. They call the
project “Books By The Lake
– Little Free Libraries”, set
the dates of July 18 and 19
for hands-on workshops
and created a Kickstarter
program to fund it.
With a goal of at least six LFLs, they hope to get the word out for people, artists, woodworkers and materials
to help offset the total cost.
“We will need teams of folks with hammers, screwdrivers, saws, sandpaper, paint and brushes, and any
other kind of tool one might think of, to put the little buildings together,” said Jim.
“And up-cycled materials like small windows or boxes, small cabinets, wooden filing cabinets, roofing
material, outdoor paints – the brighter the
better – knobs, hinges and more,” said Ellen.
And for those who are less inclined to
create their own library, Ellen and Jim will
purchase three LFL kits, which is where the
Kickstarter program comes in. Kickstarter is
the world’s largest online funding platform
for creative projects. More information

Little Free Libraries began in 2009 when
Todd Bol built a small birdhouse-like
structure and filled it with books in honor of
his mother, a former school teacher and avid
reader. Todd placed the little “house” on his
front lawn with a sign encouraging curious
visitors to “Take a book; leave a book”. Soon
Little Free Libraries began popping up all
over the country – in rural areas and cities
alike. Today there is a national network of
Little Free Libraries to help people locate
one in the area they may be living or visiting.
The Island LFLs will be registered with the
national website.

Although the Court has not designated what
counties would be affected, DiSabito is more
than concerned. “Are parents who are facing
Termination of Parental Rights and who live in
Grand Isle, Franklin or Addison Counties going to
have to go to Chittenden County to participate
in a hearing? What I have witnessed over the
years is that parents involved in TPR cases are
often low-income Vermonters, many with
transportation issues. These cases are often
hearings that are held on multiple consecutive
days and a family having to drive to Burlington
would prove difficult. This provision targets
the most vulnerable Vermonters. The greatest
burden will be on these folks, yet these folks face
losing the most – their children,” added DiSabito.

Mission, Isle La Motte 6 pm on Saturdays; St. Joseph
Church, Grand Isle 9 am on Sundays and St. Amadeus
Church, Alburgh at 10:30 am on Sundays. All are
welcome!
Legislative Update

Thank you to everyone who has spoken up for our
courthouse. Representative Krebs, Senator Mazza
and I have all pledged strong support for our North
Hero courthouse and work in Montpelier to keep our
court open as well as increase available services here.
Vermont’s judicial system, statewide, is struggling.
While the Judiciary branch receives funding increases
every single year, caseloads and court pressures
have increased even more, particularly in the area
of children endangered by parents with opiate
addictions. Reduced judge time and increased
caseloads are jeopardizing timely access to justice all
over the state.
While there is still a lot of work to do, the Judiciary
is already in better shape than in the beginning of
the session. The House Appropriations Committee
that I chair increased their budget by $1.8 million
($500,000 over the Governor’s recommendation)
and was able to exempt the Judiciary from employee
budget reductions happening throughout state
government. A few years ago, when there was an
active drive to consolidate court houses, your Reps
(at the time Ira and me) got a law passed that says
judicial services SHALL be delivered in every county.
There have not been any attempts to change that
law. The struggle now is finding cost-effective ways
to deliver timely services across the whole judicial
system, especially in North Hero.
If the best defense is a good offense, then the
most effective way to protect and improve our
courthouse would be to come up with suggestions
for how to improve court proceedings statewide.
Our local courthouse staff does a great job, but is
severely constrained by official procedures and the
resources they’re given by the central office. I’ll keep
working on even more funding and judge time, but
I’d like to hear your experiences and suggestions
about where we could avoid duplication and waste
in the court system so that we can make better use
of the resources we have. Sharing your stories and
experiences will help make change happen.

Art Show “Bird Walk”
at the Missisquoi
National Wildlife
Refuge
Calling all artists in the area to participate in the
annual art show at the Missisquoi National Wildlife
Refuge Visitor Center on Tabor Road in West Swanton,
opening on Saturday, May 16, 2015 and running
through July 17, 2015. The Refuge Open House on
May 16 celebrates International Migratory Bird Day.
This year’s art show will create a “Bird Walk” down
the halls of the Refuge Visitor Center, as its opening
coincides with guided bird walks and boat tours to
survey the local and migrating birds found on the
Refuge this time of year. A speaker will be on the
afternoon schedule.
The application to submit artwork featuring Refuge
birds, as well as the list of birds seen at the Refuge, is
found on the Friends of Missisquoi National Wildlife
Refuge website at http://friendsofmissisquoi.org/.
Note: If the birds are found on the Refuge, the
photographs do not need to be taken on the Refuge.

Siblings can be friends, companions,
playmates and rivals. How parents relate to
each child influences the sibling relationship.
Parents are invited to explore issues related
to sibling rivalry, as well as strategies that
minimize their development and chances of
them becoming harmful. After all, rivalry is
a natural part of growing up in a family with
more than one child.
Jeanine Fitzgerald will be holding a parent
training on May 11th from 6:00pm-8:00pm at
the Grand Isle Elementary School.
Jeanine Fitzgerald is a certified Human
Behavior Consultant and Specialist, and
Owner of The Fitzgerald Institute of Lifelong
Learning. Jeanine specializes in researchbased strategies in educational leadership,
relationship-building, motivation, preventing
the factors that compromise the fulfillment of
a child’s maximum potential and implementing
positive interventions in “real life” settings.
She understands the daily struggles and
frustrations of educators and parents, and
honors the “hero within” each individual she
has the privilege to work along side. Jeanine
draws on more than 35 years of professional
experience as a certified teacher, mental
health professional and mother of three grown
children; she understands the promise of every
child, as well as the diversity of their needs.

The St. Amadeus Clothes Closet will reopen on
Monday, May 4 and will be open throughout the
Summer on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 to
3 pm. Gently used clothes, bed linens and toys for

well. Sharing your treasures will benefit those in the
communities and make you feel great, too!

Vermont’s exciting handbell ensemble, as they
take you on a world tour through the artistry of
handbell music from around the globe. Enjoy

Gardens, Yellow Bird, What a Wonderful World
and Jamaican Rumba, in addition to pieces from
Africa, Russia and Wales.

So, I promised myself I would not speak of
that dreadful word this week - that word that
is causing grumpy moods in gardeners and
not, that word that makes us all question our
Vermont character, that word that just HAS
to get better. . Whether or not I am happy
with what it going on outside or whether or
not I have to wear boots instead of flip flops,
I will not speak of it. I am not sure whether
or not you know of the word I am speaking
of, I guess it depends on whether you like
the temperatures outside or the wind or the
white flakes of frozen water that have been
seen falling from the sky. I wonder if Mother
Nature knows whether or not it is nearly May?
We all know things are bound to improve
in the meteorological department, but the
question is whether it will change sooner or
later. Can you tell whether or not I am ready
for the hot summer sun? So, whether or not
you are happy with the effects of the lack on
sunshine, don’t forget that this Saturday, May
2 is Green Up Day. For more information,

The Village of Alburgh will be in the
process of replacing and repairing broken
water meters in the upcoming weeks. If your
water meter is one that needs repairs and you
are not home at the time the Superintendent
stops by, a note will be left asking for you to
contact him to set up an appointment. Please
help us make this process go as smoothly
and efficiently as possible by contacting the
Superintendent promptly.

HEART OF LIFE FUNDRAISER FOR
RELAY FOR LIFE
A special evening of fun and dancing will
be held on Saturday, May 2 at the Alburgh
Legion to raise money for the Franklin
County Relay for Life for the American Cancer
Society. The band Them Nakeds will play
and there will be raffles for many wonderful
prizes. The cost is $10 and all proceeds will
support the Heart of Life Team’s fundraising
efforts for the Relay.

SPRING CLEAN-UP
The Spring Clean-Up days for the Village
of Rouses Point will commence on Monday,
May 11 and will continue through Friday,
May 15.
Residents are requested to bag as much
of the material as possible and to place
it curbside by 7:30 am in such a position
so that parked cars, etc. do not block the
pickup truck which will greatly facilitate the
collection.
Residents are reminded that this collection
is for the pickup of bagged clippings in clear
bags only, leaves and brush and tree limbs
not to exceed 3” in diameter only.
This will be the only time the village crew
will be picking up clippings, leaves and limbs
this spring. The next pickup will be this fall.
The Compost Facility will be used for leaves and
bagged clipping only – no limbs.
21ST SENIOR CELEBRATION
The 21st Annual Senior Celebration will
take place on Friday, May 1, at the Senior
Center, 5139 North Catherine Street, in
Plattsburgh.
Events begin when the doors open at 8:20
am with a light snack. Opening Ceremonies
will begin at 9:30 am with Erin Flanigan
singing the National Anthem. There will be
an awards presentation, naming of an agency
and business of the year, and honoring 90+
seniors in attendance.
The YMCA pre-school children will visit at
10 am, musicians Frank & Gaylon will perform
at 11 am. A hot turkey lunch of roast turkey,
mashed potatoes with gravy, green beans,
and pumpkin pie for dessert will be served
at Noon. The Castaway band will perform at
that time. Frank and Gaylon will offer music
renditions from 1 pm to 3 pm and the raffles
and prizes will be awarded at 3:00 pm

Ceremonies. Tickets may be purchased
at Rouses Point Nutrition Site, 9 Liberty

AMTRAK TRAIN DAY
Amtrak Train Days to celebrate reasons
to ride for a single National Train Day to
multiple events throughout 2015.
In 2015, America’s Railroad is launching
Amtrak Train Days (ATD) to celebrate with
local communities why trains matter and
reasons to ride.
Due to the past success of the “National
Train Day”, Amtrak is expanding its
community program from multiple events
on a single day to individual events over the
course of the spring, summer and fall.
ATD will focus on reaching current and
new audiences across America to reinforce
the importance, benefits and value of

JEAN ARTHUR COMMEMORATION
DAY
The Clinton County Historical Association
is partnering with SUNY Plattsburgh’s Center
for the Study of Canada, the Strand Center
for the Arts, and the City of Plattsburgh to
present a day to commemorate film star and
Plattsburgh native, Jean Arthur. This event
will take place on Saturday, May 9 at 11 am
with the dedication ceremony of a placement
marker at 94 Oak Street. A reception at the
Center for the Study of Canada and a film
showing at the Strand Theater will follow.
More details will be forthcoming. The
William G. Pomeroy Foundation provides
the historic marker.
2ND ANNUAL CLINTON COUNTY ART
AND BOOK FAIR
The 2nd Annual Clinton County Art and
Book Fair Fundraiser will be held on Saturday,
May 9, from 10 am to 4 pm at the Plattsburgh
Recreation Center.

mediums who will be present to bring
together a culmination of artwork generated
in our County and about our County. A
large book sale will also take place during
the event and everything is priced to sell. All
proceeds from the book sale will benefit the

borrower’s card. Local
libraries have recently
unveiled
Flipster,
a next generation
digital
magazine
service. This shared
service allows readers
to browse the latest
issues of high quality
digital versions of
popular magazines,
courtesy of their local
public library.
The 30 member
libraries of the CEF
Library System now
provide both Flipster
and print versions of
popular
magazines
like Fine Gardening,
Health, Forbes and
more, so patrons will
have the option of
accessing the content
at their library, or
remotely. Magazines
can be downloaded to
iPads or iPad Minis via
a native app for offline
reading.
With their library
card barcode number, users can browse
magazines by category and search specific
periodicals. An online newsstand provides
a carousel of the most recent issues, as well
as previous issues. The table of contents
contains links that allow readers to quickly
go to articles of interest as “hotlinks” within
magazines, which open in, separate tabs
when clicked. Along with a print capability,
the Flipster platform provides an option to
zoom in and out for better readability.
System director Ewa Jankowska says,
“More and more people use smart phones
and tablets to access information today, so
it only makes sense that libraries provide
popular magazines in a digital format. We’re
all working together to make almost 40 high
interest titles easily available.

to learn more. Readers who do not have a
borrower’s card can easily obtain one from a

RONALD ALAN CASE, SR.
West Swanton- Ronald Alan Case, Sr. passed away
Tuesday evening April 21, 2015 at his West Swanton
residence, after a courageous battle with cancer, with
his loving family by his side.
Born in New Britain, Connecticut on March 4,
1953, he was the son of Homer Case and Pauline
Brouillard, and his special PaPa Charles Witter. On
November 11, 2000 he was married tothe former
Colette Robitaille who survives him.
Ron attended Coginchaug Regional High School
in Durham CT. He was an active hunter, Nascar fan,
local ice hockey supporter, and enjoyed restoring
antique vehicles. In the past few years, Ron enjoyed
many cruises and Harley rides with friends and
family. His favorite cruise was the most recent one
surrounded by his wife and children, and family
friends.
During his lifetime, Ron worked at Pratt and
Whitney in Connecticut, and also started his own
construction company. Upon moving to Vermont,
he owned and operated a dairy farm and Lakewood
Campground with his wife. During the winter
months he worked at Barry Callebaut USA, Terry
Hill Trucking, Omega Electric, and even built a few
houses. He made many friends in the local dairy
farming community through his work both as a
farmer and delivering Young’s Minerals. As an active
member of the community, Ron was on the Swanton
Planning Commission from 2002 until recently.
Ron was the guy that everyone could count on to
fix anything. He was always more than willing to
help anyone in need. He will be remembered as a
giver and a family man. Ron took pride in passing
his building skills to his three sons.
Ron is survived by his wife; Colette and their
children Ronald, Jr., Amanda, Melanie and her
husband David Lussier, Richard, Stephanie and
Jonathan. Grandchildren; Veronica, Sophia, Tucker,
Lillian, Parker and Aubree.
His brothers and sisters and their family; E.J.
Chico Fabretti, Gary and his wife Susan Case,
Richard Snedeker, Paul and his wife Debra Case, Lee
and her husband Ed Drag, Scott Case, John and his
wife Mary Gaetano, Donna and her husband Wayne
Bizier, Chip Case and his wife Kimberly, Several
aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Ron leaves behind a countless number of close
friends and a very extensive blended family. We
apologize if we’ve omitted any names. He will be
greatly missed by all the patrons of Lakewood
Campground.
His was pre-deceased by his mother Pauline and
sibling Thomas Snedeker.
Ron was an avid hockey fan, attending hundreds
of his children’s hockey games, as they went up the
ranks from T- Blade in MAHA to MVU Hockey.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to
Missisquoi Valley Amateur Hockey Association PO
Box 67, Highgate VT 05459, where a fund is being
created in Ron’s name to allow underprivileged
children to play hockey.
The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated
Monday April 27, 2015 at the Church of the Nativity
of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in Swanton. Father Luke
P. Austin was the celebrant and homilist. The Rite of
Committal and Interment followed at the family lot
in Saint Mary’s Roman Catholic Cemetery.

Killeen, TX/ Alburgh- On September 6, 1921, Fay
Juanita Davis was the first born to William Fred and
Nettie Edna (Gibson) Davis in McGregor Texas.
During her younger years Fay helped raise her
2 brothers and seven sisters as well as working full
time. During World War II she worked in Woods
Manufactory and at Hawk and Buck Factories
making army clothes.
In 1946 she met Elwin and on May 23, 1947
she married Elwin Jacob Cline and into a military
family and began her life for the next 24 years as a
military wife. They traveled and were stationed at
different bases in the United States and overseas. On
December 20, 1949 Sandra Kay was born at Camp
Hood (which later became Ft. Hood) and joined their
family. Elwin, Fay and Sandra traveled around and
went by boat to Germany where they were stationed
for a while before returning to the United States. On
December 21, 1954 another daughter Debby was
born at Ft. Hood, Texas.
Their travels continued throughout the United
States and to France, where they were one of the last
military families to leave Orleans, France when the
base was closed. During Fay’s married life there were
a lot of separations due to the military life. During
her travels Fay worked with children in churches
and chapels for over 40 years throughout the United
States and Europe. Fay was very interested in foreign
ministries and missionaries and believed very much
in the work they did and also her lord and savior.
For 13 years Fay was a Girl Scout troop leader not
only in the United States, but also in France. As a
troop leader she traveled to Germany for trainings
which made her enjoy what she did even more. On
March 7, 1974 Fay and Elwin were blessed with a
son David. Fay was very involved in her children’s
lives. In February 1990 Fay lost the love of her life when
Elwin went to be with the lord. During his illness Fay
took care of him and made him a promise that she
would take care of his mother which Fay did with the
help of the lord until her mother in law passed away.
In October of 2012, Fay moved to Alburgh, Vermont
to live with her daughter Debby and to spend time
with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Fay continued being busy until her death on April
24, 2015. Fay is survived by her children, Sandra
Arnold of Killeen Texas, Debby Curtis of Alburgh,
Vermont, and David Cline of Killeen, Texas. She
is also survived by her 5 grandchildren; Timothy
Curtis and his wife Rebekah and their 2 children
Peyton and Matthew, Amee’ Gotshall and her
husband Tyler and their 3 children, Brianna, Taylor
and Ethan, Andrew Curtis and his friend Tammy
and her 2 children, Kyle and Casey, Stephanie Curtis
all of Alburgh, Vermont, Katrina Arline and her
husband Tony and Katrina’s son Billy of Colorado.
She is also survived by granddaughter in law Leah
Curtis, a former son in law Richard Barr and an
“adopted” grandson Bill Getts.
Fay is survived by her brother A.L. Davis and
wife Mary Ann of Waco and her sister Madelyn and
her husband Joe Pitts of Albertville, Alabama. Fay
is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and
many friends especially Mr. Charles Brown.
Besides her husband Elwin, Fay is preceded in
death by her parents, six sisters: Catherine Sheon,
Carrie Dean Smith, Ruby McDonald, Margret
Buckner, Louise Parker, Lucille Murrell and her
brother J.A. Davis as well as her in laws Major
Russell and Anna Marie Cline. Fay will be missed
Alburgh- Murielle T. Scillion passed away
peacefully on April 20, 2015 at the University of
Vermont Medical Center with her family by her side.
Murielle was born in Bristol, Connecticut on
October 17, 1937. She is the daughter of Alphonse
and Claire Taillon. She attended St. Ann’s School
and graduated from Bristol High School. On May
28, 1962, she married Delbert C. Scillion.
After enjoying a summer home in Vermont, Delbert
and Murielle moved permanently to Alburgh, when
they purchased Henry’s Sportsman’s Inn. Murielle
and Del always worked tirelessly together as a team
unning the business. They could always be seen
completing projects together and in the off-season,
they enjoyed searching for and refinishing beautiful
antique furniture, which is displayed proudly in
her home and the home of her daughter. Murielle
loved meeting people and she made many life-long
friendships with the families who visited Henry’s
year after year. Upon selling Henry’s, Murielle
worked at F.W. Meyers in Rouses Point, New York
and later at UPS in Champlain, New York. She was
consistently recognized and appreciated for her
strong work ethic and willingness to help others
with anything they might need. She was a great cook
and loved making baked goodies and taking them
to work to share with her colleagues. Murielle was
fiercely independent and was known for mowing her
own lawn and taking care of her own home right up
until the time of her death. Murielle’s biggest gift
in life was to her family. Her unconditional love
and support are forever remembered. The shining
star in Murielle’s life was her granddaughter, Jenna.
In Murielle’s eyes, the sun rose and set around her
relationship with Jenna and their special bond will
forever be treasured. She also, cherished her son-inlaw, Thomas whom she loved like a son.
Murielle was a life-long member of the Catholic
faith and attended church at St. Joseph’s and St.
Anne’s Shrine in Isle LaMotte, St. Amadeus in
Alburgh and more recently at St. Patrick’s Church
in Rouses Point, New York. Her commitment and
trust in God were evident in the way she lived her
life. She had a beautiful soul. She was kind beyond
measure and her devotion to her family and friends
is a reflection of her deep beliefs.
Murielle is survived by her loving family, including
her daughter, Lynne and husband, Thomas and their
daughter, Jenna; her sister; Liliane Braman and
many nieces and nephews.
Murielle was predeceased by her parents, her
husband Delbert, her brothers, Gilbert Taillon and
Aime Taillon, and her sisters, Marcelle Valentine,
Olivette Ricci, Louise Tomlan and Madeleine
Williams.
In accordance with Murielle’s wishes, there will
be no calling hours. The Liturgy of Christian
Burial was celebrated Friday, April 24, 2015 at St.
Amadeus Roman Catholic Church in Alburgh with
The Rev. Msgr. Bernard Bourgeois as Celebrant and
Homilist. The Rite of Committal and Interment
followed in Saint Amadeus Cemetery, Alburgh.
Contributions in Murielle’s name may be made to

WATER LINE FLUSHING
During the dates of May 4 through
May 22, the Town will implement their
water distribution flushing program.
The North Hero Water Department
conducts a comprehensive water line
flushing program throughout the
Town.
This process rapidly moves
water through the Town’s water piping
system to scour the inside of the water
lines. Flushing is a common practice
to improve water quality and maintain
the water distribution system. Minerals
and other materials that accumulate in
the lines are removed by flushing. This
material is not harmful but can cause
discolored water. Customers may notice
discolored water or a change in water
pressure when flushing is conducted in
their area. When flushing is taking place,
we recommend that customers check to
ensure their tap water is running clear
before using it for drinking, cooking,
or clothes washing. Customers who
experience some coloring or sediment
in their water should run the cold water
faucet for a short time. This should clear
up any discolored water.

Island’s in the
Sun Needs Your Ideas

Now that Spring is here we need to start thinking
about what we can do at the Center to help you enjoy
the nice days ahead. We will be planning activities
based on your ideas. We already have a ping-pong
table, a foose ball table and a good number of board
games and puzzles. We also have regularly scheduled
Staying Strong in Vermont and Zumba Gold classes.
We can arrange a AAA Safe Driving class if you want
to reduce points on your license, or get a discount on
insurance. But we can do so much more if you let us
know what interests you. Our painting class can resume if you want to
participate. We will be building a raised bed garden
for use by the Center and to provide fresh veggies to
our food shelf, with the help of our Girl Scouts and our
wonderful Dottie. The town has given us permission
to build a horse-shoe pit in the park behind the
Center, and we would like to plan a toddler play area
there as well. And, if there is interest, we could get
a dart board for games and tournaments. Finally,
we have had requests to resume Game Night for
groups of people who want to play cards, games and
socialize. All things are possible if you let us know
your interests.

Aluminum Avian Antics Participate
in First Robotics Challenge
On March 14, the Aluminum Avian Antics, a 4-H robotics team from Grand
Isle participated in the Vermont regional team competition for First Tech
Challenge (FTC), which is a robotics competition where teams design, build,
and program their robot to compete against other teams to complete the
year’s challenge. The regional competition is hosted by UVM.
The Aluminum Avian Antics is a team of 4-Hers who first met because of
their shared interest in poultry and agriculture and have now developed
additional interests in robotics and engineering. This was their first year
competing in the FTC realm and they were very happy to place 9th out of 31
teams competing this year. They also received the MOTIVATE award, which
(from the FTC website) is, “This Judged Award celebrates the Team that
exemplifies the essence
of the FIRST Tech
Challenge competition

Community-shared solar developer Clean
Energy Collective (CEC) is marking the
construction on their 2nd Vermont community
solar projects with a “groundbreaking” event
on Thursday, April 30, from 11 am to noon The
facility, which will serve electric customers of
Vermont Electric Cooperative, will provide broad
and equal access to the benefits of solar power to
all rate payers, including residential, commercial,
or municipal customers.
Clean Energy Collective VP Jeff Lord and
supporters of local renewable energy will be on
hand for presentations, project commentary, and
Q&A.
Vermont legislation has helped clear the
way for broader development and adoption of
solar with group net metering, and communityshared solar is proving to be one of the most
effective and accessible solutions. Featuring local,
off-site, commercial-grade solar installations,
community-shared solar is available to all
VEC ratepayers, including those with shaded
properties, renters, and residents living in
multi-unit housing. Nothing is installed on the
customers’ home or property, and savings appear
directly on their electric bill.

Island Line Revisited
Screening
On Thursday May 7 at 7 pm the Isle La
Motte Rec Department is pleased to present the
documentary film by Jim Jones Vermont’s Island
Line Revisited. The film will be shown at the Isle
La Motte School. The rail line was truly dynamic
as it stretched through the islands with stops
beginning in Burlington, Starr Farm Beach,
Colchester, South Hero , Grand Isle, Abnaki,
North Hero, Isle La Motte Station, Alburgh,
and from there both to
Noyan, Quebec and
Rouses Point and west.
We anticipate having
retired railroaders who
worked the line and

Isle La Motte’s Green Up Day Honors Mary Jane
The Isle La Motte Community Organization will once again host
the island’s Annual Green Up Day on Saturday morning, May 2.
Volunteers will meet at the Isle La Motte School at 8 a.m. to sign
in and receive instructions, road assignments, gloves, bags, and the
2015 Isle La Motte Green Up Day button. When the work is done
lunch, will be served at the Isle La Motte Methodist Church.
This year’s Green Up Day is dedicated to MaryJane Tiedgen, who
was instrumental in reviving and organizing Green Up Day on
Isle La Motte. Her love for Isle La Motte, for children, and for the
environment was legendary. Please help to honor her memory and
share in her passion for keeping our island beautiful.

NORTH HERO
Did you know that Vermont was the first state to designate a day to
clean up the entire state? Green Up Day was started in 1970 by then
Governor Deane Davis and supported by Senator George Aiken.
That first year, an amazing 4,000 truck loads of trash were hauled
by the Highway Department, comprising over 20,000 cubic yards
of trash removed from Vermont highways and state roads. Another
20,000 cubic yards of trash were removed from town roads. The
Green Up Day tradition has continued since then with neighbors
joining neighbors to collect roadside litter and green up our
beautiful state. This year, The North Hero Recreation Committee
hopes that you will volunteer a few hours on Saturday, May 2nd
to pick up litter in your neighborhood. You get your official Green
Up Day bags at the North Hero Town Office any day prior to May
2nd or even that morning. Once you have a full bag or two, join us at
Camp Ingalls for a complimentary lunch at 12 noon. *This year you
may drop off the full Green Up Day bags at Camp Ingalls. We will
have delicious hot dogs, hamburgers and veggie burgers with all the
fixings, courtesy of Hero's Welcome and the Harbor Store. North

Don’t forget to sign up for Green Up Day! Join South Hero Land
Trust and your friends and neighbors for a community clean-up
effort on Saturday, May 2! South Hero Land Trust is organizing this
annual clean-up of South Hero’s streets and shoreline, and they are
looking for volunteers to join them on May 2nd. An hour of your
time will make a huge difference in cleaning up our community in
time for spring and summer walking and biking. This year there are
four ways that you can help.

recommended! The Round Pond State Park Clean-Up will begin at
8:45 on May 2. Please join the Commission at the entrance to the
park- look for the orange gate on East Shore Road. This is a great
opportunity for any middle school students needing volunteer
hours, although we do ask for parents to accompany any young
volunteers.
Join the Lake Champlain Land Trust for a Wild Parsnip Round
Up! LCLT staff and volunteers will be digging up the invasive wild
parsnip plants in the fields at Round Pond State Park- as part of our
joint effort to minimize its impact on the native plant populations
in the wetland. They will be meeting at the corner of East Shore Road
and Landon Road at 8:45 in the morning. Join this effort to help
protect the unique natural resources of South Hero! Please bring
gloves, and a shovel if you have one. Some shovels will be available.
Join South Hero Land Trust staff and board for a family clean-up of
White’s Beach. This is a great change to introduce young children
to Green-Up Day in a safe and fun environment. Join SHLT at 9:45
to clean up this great community resource. Bags will be provided,
please bring gloves.

CONCISE SUMMARY: This proposed rule amends an existing rule that
designates drugs and other chemical substances that are illegal or
judged to be potentially fatal or harmful for human consumption unless
prescribed and dispensed by a professional licensed to prescribe or
dispense them. Examples include acetyl-fentanyl, a lethal opioid, and
newly emerged synthetic recreational drugs. The rule also restricts the

WILM is a non-profit radio station based in Isle La Motte. All of our
equipment and advertising is paid for by the owners. On Tuesday,
April 21, we noticed that three of our station information signs had
been taken from 3 locations: the 4 corners in Alburgh, by God’s Little
Brown Church on Route 2, and by the pull off on the Isle La Motte
side of the causeway. There was no slander against anyone or
any organization on them, just an awareness of our station and its
frequencies. We do not understand why anyone would want these signs and we would welcome anyone
coming forward with information about them. In light of this event we will no longer use
roadside signs for advertisement of the radio station. We feel bad about this because it was

Thank You Gordon Lowe
Gordon Lowe was a mentor to me in so
many ways. His commitment to the North
Hero community, to the Island, and to the
waters that surround it was always a positive
for me to follow. During my time as a
community member and as a participant in
the town’s governance Gordon was always
ready to listen and to share.
Beyond the joys of sharing gardening
secrets, long kept tomato seeds from “old
Henry Rossier”, bird sightings from house
wrens to eagles, and, of course, the lake,
Gordon also shared his wisdom of what it
means to be a veteran.
I learned so much from Gordon and the
fellow members of his generation who lived
in North Hero: Charlie Clark, Norm Craig,
Irving Blackwell, Louis Dorwaldt and Winston
Way. It should come as no surprise, for it is
this generation that we, with reverence, call
The Great Generation.
It was a privilege to know Gordon Lowe.

Fundraiser
For Relay For Life
A special evening of fun and dancing will be
held on Saturday, May 2 at the Alburgh Legion
to raise money for the Franklin County Relay for
Life for the American Cancer Society. The band
Them Nakeds will play and there will be raffles
for many wonderful prizes. The cost is $10 and
all proceeds will support the Heart of Life Team’s
fundraising efforts for the Relay.

Saturday, May 2 is Green Up Day in Isle La
Motte! Rain or shine, volunteers will meet at
the Isle La Motte School at 8:30 am to sign in
and receive instructions, road assignments,
gloves, bags, and the 2015 Isle La Motte
Green Up Day button. When the work is
done, lunch will be served at the Isle La Motte
Methodist Church.
This year’s Green Up Day is dedicated to
MaryJane Tiedgen, who was instrumental
in reviving and organizing Green Up Day in
Isle La Motte. She believed in keeping our
island beautiful and teaching our children

Strides for James
5k/10k Run
The Third Annual Strides for James 5k/10k
run, 1-mile walk, and children’s run will be held
at the Miner Institute in Chazy on Saturday,
May 9. This event is held in memory of James
Wilson, a passionate runner and outdoorsman
whose life was cut short in 2012. The proceeds
from the race go to the James Dean Wilson
Scholarship Fund at Clinton Community College.

Once again the Champlain Islands Parent Child
Center is holding its famous Wine down fundraiser
this Friday, May 1 at the Snow Farm Vineyard. Each
year we run our programs based on fundraising and
donations, and we strive to have the best for our
children here at the center. I was in a training recently
with a teacher that reminded me of something I had
been taught when I was in school getting my degree
twenty years ago. She said “children’s brains develop
in the first five years of their lives” and I thought to
myself we are their educators and our programs need
to be healthy, vibrant, exciting and full of information
that will help the children have a strong start to life.
With your support, our program can give the care
and early education that the children deserve.
I would like to invite each and every one of you
to visit our website cipcc.org and buy a ticket to our
event. Come out and talk to the teachers about
what we do with the children in your community
or just sit back talk with friends and listen so some
music. Live music will be provided by local artist, Will

Vermont Lake Monsters and has discounted
tickets available. The tickets are $6 each and
are for the Monday, June 29 game against

Saturday, May 2 from 8 am to Noon – come
and help with this fun Vermont tradition –
join your neighbor’s and help pick up litter
from Milton’s 119 miles of public roadsides.
And for all your hard work, we end the day
with a BBQ at noon at the Middle Road Milton
Recreation Park shelter.
Some details: Sign up and pick up your
green bags. To prevent abusive dumping,
the litter you pick must be placed in
official bright green bags, which can be
left on the side of the road for pickup.
They may be signed for 8 AM to 5 PM in the
Town Clerk’s Office at 43 Bombardier Rd. the
week before or at the Milton Recreation Park
shelter between 8 AM to 11 AM the day of the
event.
There has been some concern about the

Remember Take a Seat in the Islands? The “Treasures” are now cabinets
instead of benches, and the event has rebranded to reflect the change! It’s the
fifth annual community art project sponsored by the Lake Champlain Regional
Chamber of Commerce, and it is coming to the Islands soon!
This year, Sam’s Wood Furniture has sponsored 18 small cabinets, all painted
by regional artists and sponsored by our local businesses. The cabinets will go
on display throughout the Islands in mid-June, attracting hundreds of visitors to
the businesses where they are located. Maps will be available at many locations.
On Friday, August 21, all the cabinets will be sold at auction at a special event at
Camp TaKumTa, who will receive partial proceeds.
Artists include: Corliss Blakely, Kimberley Bombard, Paula Bradley, Heidi
Chamberlain, Alyson Chase, Cathy Croteau, Laurie Darling, Alice Dunn, Kathie
Dustira, Linda Effel, Jessica Goerold, Nicole Mandeville, Darlene McGrath, Lyna
Lou Nordstrom, Suzanne Sauve, Amanda Schirmer, Judy Tiplady and Johanne
Yordan.

FREE METAL DAY
Free Metal Day will be held May 16 from 8 to 2 pm
at the Grand Isle Transfer Station. Free Metal Day is
open to all residents.
SMORGASBORD
The North Hero sixth grade class will be hosting a
Smorgasbord on May 9 at 5 pm at the North Hero
School. Jim Martin will be roasting a variety of meats
to be accompanied by a great selection of side dishes.
Serving will be buffet style at $10 a plate.
ANNUAL PIE SALE
The Annual Pie Sale to benefit St. Amadeus Church
and St. Joseph’s Mission will be on May 9. The sale
will be held from 9 to 1 pm at two locations this
year: On the Run (Crossroads) and the new Irving/
Jolley near the Rouses Point Bridge. There will be a
wide array of homemade pies from local area cooks
available for purchase for only $8 a pie!
INSIDE YARD SALE
Everyone has been waiting for Flea Market season
and the first one of the season will be held inside the
St. Amadeus Parish Center on May 16 from 9 until 2
pm. Vendors must reserve tables in advance. Please
call Maurice Gauthier at 802-796-4418 to reserve a
table or for more information. The Snack Bar will be
open with Maurice’s delectable soups on the stove.
