PRINCIPAL’S UPDATE:
March Madness…
Wow! It’s hard to believe we are finishing the 3rd quarter. Spring is definitely in the air and
students are feeling the long March of March. We’ve done a lot of great work this quarter and, by
the time Spring Break rolls around, we will have had our longest uninterrupted stretch of school.
If you’ve noticed your 7th or 8th grader being a little more “antsy” than normal or running into
some concentration and/or follow through issues, this is normal for this time of year.
It’s easy to jump in at these times and (if you make the same mistakes I do with my own kids)
jump in and lecture them about how they need to work harder and buckle down. Now that you
know your student’s behavior may be more reflective of feeling like there is too much work and
no real end in sight the most helpful solution may be to work with your your student to find a
little balance and get a mental boost from some positive interaction. Think of it as hitting a
mental “reset” button.
Be sure to take the time to reinforce your students for the work they have put in and look for a
way that you can have some time together as a family. Everyone can benefit from the positive
energy you create because happier, more focused kids equals happier moms and dads!
CORRECTIONS TO LAST WEEK’S WALL OF FAME:
Each week our teachers select students who have been exemplary of the hard work and positive
energy we want to see in our classes. Students’ names are added to the “Wall of Fame” just outside
the activity quad. Last week, a few names were left off of our list inadvertently. Belated
congratulations are in order for the following students: Evan Jenkins, Colton Campa, Bradley
Naffziger, Gabriela Morales, Jason Renteria, and Kenny Heinrich
8th GRADE PARENT HIGH SCHOOL REGISTRATION MEETING:
Mark your calendars for Tiger Fest, the SLOHS style Open House on Thursday, April 23 2015.
The High School will host parents and students of incoming 9th graders at 5:30PM in the new gym.
Parents and students of current 9-12th grade students are invited to the Open House at 6:00pm. Don’t
forget to mark your calendars for this cool event!
CHOIR NEWS
LAMS Choir is taking part in the Central Coast Choral Festival - Next Thursday March 26 at CAL
POLY PAC. Each session hosts 8 choirs from all over the state who take turns performing 3 of their
most challenging songs. Our session is from 10am-12:15pm.
This is a free concert open to the public.
AROUND SCHOOL
 Congratulations to our MathCounts team of Kit Scriven, Christine Chiang, Caelan Struble and
Lulu Dai for competing in the Math Counts Irvine last weekend to compete in the Statewide
MathCounts competition. The competition was very tough as schools from all over California were
competing. Though our students did not place, we look forward to another great MathCounts season
next year!
 Congratulations to Kaylee Beardsley: On December 10, she sent in an audition tape to the Honors
Performance Series of Carnegie Hall auditioning for the Juniors Chambers Choir. This is an elite
national and international program that only accepts 50 students per year. Kaylee received an email last
week stating that she was accepted into the program. She will be in New York rehearsing with the
Juniors Chambers Choir from June 24-27 and on the 28th, she will be preforming at Carnegie Hall.
Alex Rankin, Qili Paape, Janea Huber, Hannah Alltucker, Sophie Frost, John Erbstoesser, Will
Guy, and Kai Montes. At the March 9 awards ceremony at Elks Lodge 322
 Cupcake Wars start this week. Mrs. Carlin’s Home Ec classes will be in stiff competition with one
another to see who can create not only the tastiest cupcakes, but the best looking display! Judging
begins on Friday.
 Congratulations to the following students who were chosen as district winners in the annual Writing
Celebration contest. Their entries have moved onto the county level for judging.

INCREDIBLE SUMMER CAMP OPPORTUNITY:
This year, Laguna Middle School will be hosting the YMCA Youth Institute Summer Camp. This 5
week camp begins with a week of sleepaway camp followed by 4 weeks of amazing learning and
fun. Students at the camp will produce their own magazine and movies over the course of the
summer and will screen their movies at the Youth Institute film festival at the end. Student films
from the Cambria Youth Institute have been winners at the SLO International film festival and
others.
The camp will run from July 6- August 7 and will be from 9am-3pm Monday-Friday (The first
week, July 6-10 is the sleepaway camp portion with students camping in Mammoth Lakes for 4
nights). We do ask that students commit to the full 5 weeks of the program as they will be working
in production teams and will be developing their skills in working with one another.
This camp is open to students currently in grades 6-8. We are giving priority to students who are or
will be attending Laguna Middle School next year. There are only 20 spaces available in this camp
and the cost is $750 (only $150 a week for full time camp and a week away!) and financial
assistance is available. Signups will be coming soon. For more information, contact Dan Hartzell at
dhartzell@sloymca.org

THREE MILE RUN SPONSORS
The Three Mile Run is only a few days away! On April 2, our students will be running in our largest
and most fun fundraiser of the year, the 3-Mile Run. Students went home on Friday with envelopes to
collect flat-fee donations from friends, family and neighbors. All proceeds will be collected on April 2
and go towards our PTA to provide great opportunities for our kids.

towards ensuring the success of our middle school student body. In 2014, additional funds raised by
our community sponsors helped to fund the school’s first play in many years, provided transportation
for field trips, microscopes for science labs and Samsung tablets for multiple teaching initiatives.
Thanks to Powell's Sweet Shoppe for donating gift certificates to our run and to Ravine Water Park
for donating season passes!

A huge thank you goes out to Lisa Guy and Becky Price for the beautiful job they have done with
