ORPHAN TRAIN by author Christina Baker Kline tells
the little known story in American history where tens of
thousands of orphaned children were put on trains from
eastern cities and given away as labor to Midwestern
families. This fictional account tells the story of Vivian,
a 91-year-old woman, as she unpacks her history with
the help of Molly, a young adult in the current foster
care system. They connect, with Vivian treasuring her
Irish roots and Molly finding comfort in her Native
American traditions. Most of current child labor laws,
adoption laws, and foster care systems were the result
of this history. The discussion will be led by Professor
Lis Bass, CCC coordinator for One Book, One
Philadelphia.
