HERCULES WIMBLEDON AC NEWS & RESULTS W/C March 29, 2015 Richard reports on a successful Stadium work party – 28/29 March My faith in human nature, and the members of HWAC, is restored! I had a tremendous response for my work party at the weekend. I am going to name the roll of honour because everybody deserves acknowledgement and the club’s thanks. Mark Cahill again did both full days, ably supported by Mick Leigh, Djordje and Lena Mijic, Caroline Marshall and Ruby, Ali and Zac Purnell, Kevin Snelling, David Jeffs, Richard Clark, Alistair Henderson, Rebecca and Marco Ravic, Henry Silverstein, Gary and Annette Forde and the entire Grima family. I also had support from several of “Pat’s Parents” who have always been very keen to help while the 7 Upsandovers are training on Sunday morning. I hope I haven’t missed anybody! It was great to see a few youngsters, especially Henry who came on his own and did a fantastic job clearing up behind the council’s green container and helping me check the numbers of implements, with a very neat list. Members can’t fail to see what an improvement has been made and I hope they will make an effort to thank personally the people I have mentioned. Here are a few photos. You will note that everybody is smiling: that means they had a great time! Apologies to Caroline for catching her at a wind-blown moment. The final photo is devoid of human interest. That’s because it is of the areas on both sides of the fence at the finish end, the result of a superb response from the junior age groups after training the week before when in 10 minutes flat they cleared and bagged the leaves, probably 20+ bags in all, but of course it was dark at the time. The seniors similarly are also thanked for clearing the troughs for the jumping boards last Tuesday. Regards Richard Weston INTERNATIONAL MARATHON VICTORY FOR HW’s CAROLINE JACKSON Caroline taking centre stage after winning the women’s marathon in Limmasol, Cyprus “It was a tough run so no PB..but I'm happy with my result,” said Caroline shortly after the race.” The heat started to get to me 6 miles from the finish but I really enjoyed it. I've never made use of all the aid stations at every 2.5k, especially in those last 6miles. Legs and everything felt great and in shape. Just the heat. All good today too and no aches.” “I thought I'd wake up with a sore head this morning actually from all the drinks people were buying me at the after party at the finish line...my trophy is almost bigger than the FA CUP!” Also competing abroad on Sunday was Matthew Sharp who competed over the half-marathon distance in Milan, Italy against a very loaded field but was rewarded with a PB of 72:08. In the less exotic Liverpool, Joe Toomey splashed his way to seventh place with a PB success in clocking 73:46 over the same distance. Also in Liverpool was Charles Lawrie looking concentrated on proving first M65 home, while Joe’s mum Sophie looks delighted with her performance. LISA – NO DOUBTING THOMAS! Lisa Thomas looks like she’s ready to play havoc with the HW W50 rankings over road and track this summer after setting the first such mark in her new category at the Wimbledon Common parkrun on Saturday where she clocked 20:17 as first woman home. Getting her timing right as usual, Lisa achieved this success on her actual 50th birthday! Lisa in a parkrun from last month EAST SURREY LEAGUE ROAD RACES – THURSDAY, APRIL 2- EWELL COURT For those seeking a flat fast road course a little over four miles, (two miles for kids) don’t forget the East Surrey event to be held this Thursday (April 2) from Ewell Court track and starting at 7pm. HW distance athletes should have received details of this event but for any others interested please e-mail Pete for directions. IS THE ISLE OF MAN READY FOR THE HERCULES ARMY? Best of luck to Liam White and his group of HW warriors as they contest the rugged terrain of the Isle of Man at this coming Easter Weekend running festival. Word from the streets is that the team is not in the shape that saw the club taste success at this event in recent years but no doubt they will give it their best shot. GARNIER GRABS GOLD Congratulations to Anna Garnier on her victory in the W60 category in the European Masters Cross Country Championships in Poland last Friday. Those Wednesday runs from Lauriston must be paying off! AN EVENING FOR CELEBRATION There was a grand turnout from HW members, their families and friends at the AGM/Awards Evening held at the Wimbledon Golf Club last week. Guy Gibbons was on hand with his camera to catch the action but such was the quantity of his evening’s work it has been decided to post his results on the HW website where they will appear shortly. To reproduce them all in the Newsletter may cause your in-box to overload! Paul Miller’s sprint group takes their share of the spoils at the AGM TRACK AND FIELD AT TOOTING BECKONS Time to get those track spikes an outing with the first of the ever popular open meetings to be held this Saturday at nice & local Tooting Bec HELP WANTED FOR THE HERCULES WIMBLEDON YOUNG ATHLETES MEETING The HW Young Athletes meeting is fast approaching with the Wimbledon Park event to be held on Sunday, April 12, with the first event staring at 11am. For a meeting of this size there is a large demand for helpers, be it officials, people for various roles, e.g. supplying results, sandpit rakers, programme sellers etc, etc. If you are able to assist with general duties please contact Fred Green (fredgreen14@yahoo.co.uk) and for officials, Nick Getting (nick.getting@gmail.com) is your man. WILL COCKERELL TELLS AN HISTORICAL TALE FROM THE SURREY LEAGUE This year marks the 50th anniversary of HW's first, and to date only, Surrey Cross-Country League triumph. Spectacular and dramatic in equal measure, Hercules [as they were then] suffered three stinging defeats to Belgrave in the season, but a stellar result in the third fixture at Addington meant Belgrave went into the last match needing to take out a gargantuan 155 points out of their comrades and Lauriston Cottage training partners. And they bally well almost did it! This is the final outcome. 1 Hercules AC (243, 295, 147, 261) 946 points 2 Belgrave H (225, 280, 337, 120) 962 points An amusing postscript is that the race officials were so convinced at race's end that Belgrave had won, they promptly handed them the trophy; before some bright spark at Hercules piped up: "care to check that?" PERHAPS THE GRASS WASN’T GREENER Pete writes, “I bumped into Jonathan Osbourne in Morden town centre last week and was surprised how fit he looked and suggested he came down to the track and mingle with the fine collection of young sprinters now training with HW.” I also told him he should never have left his former coach Denis Roll, who after all saw him to an HW U17 400m record of 48.94sec way back in 2010. “You’ve not run that quick since then,” I reminded Jonathan in spite of being cherry picked by an ambitious coach soon after setting his record. LONDON INTER CLUB CHALLENGE – FIRST MEETING APRIL 19 If anyone is looking for some track & field competition away from the usual League and local open meetings it’s worth while taking a look at the season’s fixtures for the London Inter Club Challenge, the first meeting taking place at Lee Valley on Sunday, April 19 where all age groups are being catered for This link http://www.londonathletics.org/licc will take you to details of events and timetables etc. IMPORTANT NOTICE FROM SIMON INGALL – HW MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY Here is a reminder that annual subscriptions were due on January 1st (again no increase). In the next few weeks Simon will be posting notice of lapsing to unpaid members so if you want to remain as a member of HW please pay up! REMEMBER: those not paid up will have to pay the Merton fee of £5 for training at the track! ANNUAL REGISTRATION WITH ENGLAND ATHLETICS For certain events you will require an England Athletics (EA) membership number. The annual registration starts again on April 1st, 2015 and now costs £12. (By concession, those who were registered with EA for the very first time between January 1st and March 31st, 2015 are covered until March 31st, 2016.) Unfortunately EA’s system does not allow individuals to register themselves and therefore it has to be administered by the club on your behalf. Please see the EA registration section on http://www.herculeswimbledonac.org.uk/Membership-&Renewals.html for how to pay. ARE YOU RUNNING LONDON?
